Nigerian human rights lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, dies at 49

One of Nigeria’s leading human rights lawyers, Bamidele Aturu, has died. He died today Wednesday July 9th at a Lagos hospital where he was being treated for an undisclosed ailment.

Late Bamidele Aturu came to prominence as a fighter against power abuses when, as a member of the National Youth Service Corps, he refused to shake the hand of the then military administrator of Niger State, Col. Lawan Gwadabe, in 1988 during his NYSC passing out parade declaring that the military had caused great harm to the democratic aspirations of Nigerians.

Mr Aturu studied law at the University of Ife, and devoted much of his legal practice to representing the oppressed and marginalized people in the society. He was quite for his criticism of government's policies. He was 49. May his soul rest in peace...amen.

Please gay anonymous, my very close friend actually ex boyfriend just told me he is gay.I don't know how to feel or how to react or even what to say to him.he had tried killing himself in the past but I thought he was bipolar or just extreme depression, I did know it was for man matter.I'm really confused and he said I shouldn't tell anybody and I don't want him to go back to his suicidal state.we are not in Nigeria but his parents have been on his case to come home and marry and he is their only boy out of 5 kids. I just want to know what to tell him to make him relax small Please how did you cope?I'm okay with homosexuality but I still have my reservations.I'm just confused as you are an openly gay anonymous, I hope you read this and comment.I am tired of writing. Just let me know how to go about this. Thanks.ignore judgemental LIBers, they are not worth it

Omg! He was in my sch about 3 months ago. He was a brilliant man with a good heart, a philanthropist, and a radical human rights lawyer. He'll be greatly missed. Rip sir

For me it's a sad sad day. Never met the man but his take on topical issues over time has unquestionably endeared him to many not the least myself. A monumental loss to the downtrodden and Nigeria at large.

Well, what can i say about the most kind and loving man,'Godsent' to the commoners. He was someone who touched many lifes especially mine.He gave everything he had to receive nothing in exchange, ask the okada riders on Lagos road, ask a female lawyer that the government wanted to oppress over her property, and also ask those that he paid their tuition. Those ones that are saying rubbish out of their dirty and empty brains about him surely need psychiatric attention.Barrister Bamidele Francis Aturu,my hero. He was always there just in time to give an helping hand, talk about finances, moral support and some other and of course the legal services without being particular about returns. He never for once requested for anything,we were together at Lagos Airport Hotel for his book launch with the likes of Prof Itsey Sagay,Barrister Femi Falana and others in the first week in december 2013 and of course he delivered.I could also remember vividly how he dealt with Governor Fayose at a conference in Osun state in 2003 or so,this man was a courageous soldier with ammunition he fought the battle to a reasonable conclusion.I will miss you,i will miss your word of encouragement, especially how you stood by me during my dad's demise.Adieu my mentor......
