Ibadan kids spend new year at the escalator at Shoprite Ibadan

Writing this with a straight face. According to a LIB reader who sent in the photo, he said the pic was taken yesterday at Heritage Mall in Ibadan. The kids came to the mall with their guardians to spend the New Year but ended up spending most part of their visit at the mall's escalator. He said the kids were initially so scared of the elevator, but when they finally got to use it, they loved it and took turns going up and down the elevator...from dawn till dusk. He said there was actually a queue and a lot of argument about who goes first. Like I said, I wrote this with a straight face. Let the kids enjoy...:-)

I completely agree with you. I grew up in Ibadan and am glad I did. Ibadan is not as bad as people try to make it. I have lived in Lagos , Ilorin and Abeokuta, visited Akure, Ilesha etc. Ibadan is next to Lagos when it comes to development. Rather than making Ibadan seem 'razz' I think we need to realise that outside Lagos, Southwest is not catching up at all.

Linda, so u truly pick comments to post? Why didn't u post my comment? I am going to make my comment for the last time and I am out!!!!
My first experience on an escalator was in ibadan some 30 years ago at Leventis...it was a great experience and we had to go back and forth....i am sure it would have been news at this age and stage. ibadan was one of the most sophisticated cities in Nigeria, if not for lack of sustainability...people born in the 70s will remember Leventis, cocoa dome, trans amusement park, the zoo, the university, chicken grotto and the coins we used way back....if you like don't post!

Its not their fault. The Yorubas are undeveloped so leave them let them enjoy and just pray they get better.

This is the same everywhere. It happens right here in the U.S.A. There is nothing funny abt it.

Oh please kids do this every where. I live in the UK and I see kids sometimes in shopping malls going up and down the escalators. Though I don't see bunch of kids queueing up, probably because there are loads of shopping malls with escalators. The point is they're kids and they ll always be thrilled by something like an escalator.

Unknown said...

It's normal they most b scared at first... No case

This post is so biased its dripping ! I wonder what the kids of your village would do in 2045 when shoprite finally opens there !

The Lord said in the bible, let the children (kids) come to me, for their's is the kingdom of God. Funny how you have to mock kids all in the name of bigotry and preferential sentiments.

Abi now,na fun..wetin ur correspondent sef dey do for elevator?guess he dd get his turn..

If u must yab, make sure ur write up is on point. U say escalator, nd in same breath, elevator.

I live both in America nd Ibadan. Yes, it may not be a big deal overseas Bcos these things have been there for like forever, but kids still get silly on them..

I have lived in Lagos too nd I saw how residents made 'palms' a sort of mecca when just opened. Coming in their Sunday best nd parading up and down with plastic bags containing one item, sometimes with nothing.... Why then is it a big deal how Ibadan kids choose to have fun? Abi because camera phone nd social media never dey popular when Lagos people just got introduced to these things?

Thank God for u no one was there to take ur foto when u first stepped in an elevator or on an escalator, I bet we would hav laughed pieces at you..

Errrr.... I was at Ikea City Mall yesterday and this was also happening there. Its not only in Ibadan

Unknown said...

I'm so sure some adults present at the scene will also be craving to experience such (moi-inclusive) - cos there is a kid in everyone. Happy for them kids.

Av been to north, south , East and West of this country, No exposed region like the south West. South west locals always get first feel of development more than any other region.

Unknown said...

so many people tryna act mature here. i wasnt expecting the comments to queue up .....They are just " kids" - Get a life if you cant digest that. And No, they havent seen it before but it has nothing to do with " poverty " scumbags!

Can you please answer this question Linda Ikeji?

Anonymous said...

Yeah...right!

Anonymous said...

To be fair, (Nigerian) children like playing with escalators. I've even Chinese children doing same at Ikeja Mall.

Anonymous said...

I'm igbo, and I think you guys are crazy. Igbo locals would do this. Instead of getting a business idea from this, you waste time insulting. Umu, kwusinu ihe a unu n'eme

Anonymous said...

It's funny how Naija people dey always talk bad about things like they're enlightened. I've got news for you: You're not. Kids playing on an escalator in Nigeria & some of you're talking crap about Ibadan. SMH for you. Escalators had disappeared in this country until a few years ago. Ibadan had shopping malls before the economic situation forced them to close down in the 80s. So,seeing kids playing on an escalator is nothing more than kids being kids. Only fools will turn this into an Ibadan bashing rubbish. Grow up people!

Anonymous said...

Am telling u

Anonymous said...

please abeg .....the same thing happened when it first came to Lagos. All you razz Lagos people were jumping on the escalator.(i live in the states)mschwwwww
