Sad day for Nollywood. Prolific director Amaka Igwe passes on @51

Foremost producer, writer, director and a leading player in the Nigerian motion picture industry, Amaka Igwe has passed on. She died last night April 28th in Enugu after an asthma attack. Mrs Igwe had gone to Enugu in company of her husband for pre-production preparations for a new Igbo soap when the sad incident occurred.

She suffered an asthma attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital after initial intervention had failed but sadly died before getting there.

Mrs Igwe is survived by her husband of 21 years Charles Igwe, three children, an aged mother. So sad! May her soul rest in peace...amen. Continue...

Born Amaka Isaac-Ene, the deceased was an accomplished writer, producer, director, entrepreneur and teacher.

She is the founder of BoBTV Expo, founder and CEO of Top Radio 90.9FM, Amaka Igwe Studios, and the newly-launched Q Entertainment Networks.

A visionary and pioneer of modern Nigerian TV drama and film, she hit national limelight as the writer and producer of award-winning TV soap 'Checkmate' and its off shoot 'Fuji House of Commotion'.

Her Nollywood projects include RattleSnake and Violated - two critically-acclaimed movies that set apart Amaka Igwe Studios in the much-criticised Nollywood industry.

Amaka Igwe studied Education/Religion at the University of Ife (Now Obafemi Awolowo University). She had a Master's Degree from the University of Ibadan. She had her early education at All Saints School (Now Trans Ekulu Primary School), Girls High School Awkunanaw, Enugu and Idia College, Benin.

She worked as a lecturer at the Anambra State University of Technology and briefly in oil and Gas, before settling for the motion picture industry.

May her soul rest in peace IJN. Amaka was a lovely woman. Only yesterday I saw a camera man shooting a scene right in front of Amaka's studio. I hope the work she enjoys doing will not die.

Rosie Said.......Anonymous 10:32, What's wrong with you? A family just lost a loved one and Nigeria, one of her icons of Nollywood and you are busy talking about her weight and your stupid advise. There is always a place and time for your lecture, you failed it on both fronts. So can you all let her family mourn without adding salt to injury and for most of us,its yet to sink in..........Amaka,that we will all miss you is an understatement,Peace profound.

No that was Ego Boyo!

Her weight was more likely a contributing factor. She was very heavy set. The headshot pics don't show it. In morbid obesity, excess fat tissues can crush your internal organs including the lungs, causing difficulty to breathe.

She is a national treasure and they don't make them like Amaka Igwe. RIP

You left an indelible mark on the pages of Nigeria's creative industry history book and walked effortlessly down the corridors of Nollywood Hall of Fame.

You gave writers, young and old a run for their talent and a reason to believe that with talent and skills, focus, hardwork and determination, nothing is creatively impossible -even in a tough clime such as ours.

You discovered and raised many an outstanding Thespians who today, bestride Africa's tinsel-town like a colossus.

You mined gold from wasted rocks and built castles from rejected stones. You always leave me with admiration, inspiration and love for your untiring creative prowess.

The depth of your thinking and the brilliance of your spirit shine through your ingenious creations which you blessed this generation with. Your legacies make even the Best of the Best give a standing ovation.

As you pass on to eternal glory to be with your Lord, and though your departure leaves a gaping hollow in the mind and a gaping hole in Africa's creative industry, I pray, from my heart, that your eternal creative
spirit will keep heaven's citizens smilling through all eternity... and its glory shinning down on we mortals down below.

May you Rest In Perfect Peace, Amaka.

Husband of 21 yrs means both have been married together for 21 yrs. Not the age of her husband.

Sad loss. This woman should not have died of asthmatic of all things. They could have given her steriods asap at the hospital. I was born asthmatic and when i came to live in the UK 8 years ago; my doctor was shocked to see the medication i was using at the time - medication that i has been on all my life and prescribed our then very expensive family doctor. I was asked to throw them all away and given a preventer and reliever. I have not had an attack since them. We need to sort out healthcare in Nigeria so we stop losing people like this great woman and loved ones unnecessarily. Smh. So upset.
