Graduates get paid as low as N6,000 in Nigeria? Wow!

Folakemi Odoaje revealed on twitter that a graduate working in a private school in Ibadan earns N6,000 as salary. Not sure if she's talking about herself but she said the graduate took the job after wasting so much money applying for better paying jobs. Folakemi said this while responding to Senator-elect, Ben Murray-Bruce's tweet that the least any staff of his organization, Silverbird group, receives as salary before tax is N25,000. The question is, so the minimum wage policy does not apply to private institutions as well? See more tweets after the cut...

The situation in Nigeria is a painfil. One.Its not even about going to school. Its about the untold hardship that follows after graduating .I still don't understand why politicians in public offices earn 1000 times better than a graduate in the civil service. Why is there so much disparity between salaries being paid in NNPC,FIRS,para military for instance as opposed to peanuts being paid in civil and public service eg ministries? Its so unfair that some are treated better than the others when all of em went through thesame stress in school. The govt really have to look into that

Unknown said...

Linda this is not new to us again in this country, when your parents spent whooping sum of money to see one through school and the out come is this? I really don't blame that stephanie who said nigeria is the worst place to live in. It's sad 6k a graduate! I just pray to God almighty to see me through when it my turn to search for white collar job.

NASS are not doing anything, the way private companies use and talk to graduate is so irritating. People work 6 days a week with little pay and they are still been owed for months. How the entrepreneur feels he his doing them a favor because so called organization cant implement rules.

Unknown said...

If diz ur 1st time u re hearing diz den... Itz nothing new on how graduate earn so low amount.

Who are this so called NASS they will keep face like they are not seeing what private companies are paying people. Our government cant even fight for us inside the con3, foreign companies will come and do same thing. When this company see oyibo they go they pay them millions.

It's true they earn that, but another bitter truth is, most graduates wants office jobs/better pay from day 1.
There r businesses, handwork that can fetch u way better, but they settle for less Co's it has to do with office, our mentality is not helping.
If u r a graduate or without education but u can communicate in pidgin/English contact me, there's this organization that's recruiting, no money is needed from u.

Nigerian Graduates are lazy! Building site workers earn much more than graduates. Our housegirl is a graduate who would rather work in a house earning 50K, not paying rent or bills than work in an office for 12,000 and not have enough money to transport to work

Anonymous said...

From the little to the not very little. Over 60% of Shell(SPDC) staff are contract staff and they go as long as 5months before getting their salaries. In fact, they practically beg to be paid. Suffering and smiling. It's an endemic rot in the country and sadly the perpetrators are Nigerians.

Went for a job interview in a private school in Opic. The woman said she can only pay 20k per month...she went further that the 20k is too much sef that she could pay 10-15k..calculating my transportation to the school, its 12k per month...tithe 2k...remaining 6k..I'm a graduate with my nysc certificate o...That's Nigeria for u.

True. Am a lawyer and I can relate. So many people even have masters from foreign universities yet they still want to pay you 20k or less. I remember my days in law school, are how you will read like your life depends on that book, I no sleeping time, drinking coffee every now and then yet nothing to show for. May God help us all

Same in some parts of Benue and on top of that, alot of people haven't collected that measly wage in months.

The condition of service in Nigeria, for those that are lucky to have a condition of service, is wicked. Makes one to wonder - is this my oil rich country or am I in a foreign land? But a place where the federal and state institutions owe their employees and their pensioners, what then do u expect to get from private establishments...Its less than an animal farm here! Until we start hanging these institutions bare on the wire, mentioning specific names as it applies, hoping blogs like this will help spread the message - good you have disclaimer, and make these establishments buckle up to save face. Until then, we may be headed deeper than we are.

Anonymous said...

What is this man saying??

Minimum wages in Nigeria only pertain to those in civil service

The man should concentrate on knowing more about Nigeria

If you enforce the N25,000 on the private entities, it will lead to a large disequilibrium in the economy and frustrate those in the lower end of the SMEs who are just looking for N100,000 profit per month.

What government should focus on, is building the economy and creating a stimulating environment for the SMEs to grow.

When the wealth of the SMEs increase, then we will experience increase in wages for those in the low income class

Some earn lower than that and their employers still owe them.

Truth or dare said...

And are you aware that an establishment that has more than 5 employees is meant to contribute in their employee pension scheme. Pension reform act 2014 - a country where laws are instituted yet never implemented. No recognised nor effective enforcement agency. Who will the struggling man complain to? The ones she elected into office to speak for her are busy stealing from her. He is afraid to complain lest he gets fired by the dubious and heartless employer and spends another decade searching for another job in the torn infested rose we call Nigeria. Of course she is not even aware of where to lay her complaints. Could it be addressed to the Labour Union? But where are they? He is not aware of them because they are busy seeking strike actions that will provide backdoor cash for them and like Boko haram, have not made themselves and their mandate known to the common man. Hmmmm

mzmaris said...

So they shld turn to bricklayers?...u think those that work in offices r lazy?.....do u knw hw hard it is to lay out good biz plans, strategize to make more profits......task ur brain so much u r doomed to constant migraines....become an adrenaline junkie?....u r fool and an ignoramus...and that is putting it mildly

What about those who work and don't get paid for months on end? Nigeria Labour ministry need to tighten up on a lot of the fckry that is going on all over.
