'Second-hand tyres are killers like HIV/AIDS’ - SON

Very soon there will be no more second hand tyres to buy in Nigeria. Standards Organization of Nigeria have embarked on a mission to get rid of all fairly used tyres being sold in Nigeria and have also stopped the importation of these tyres, because according to them, ‘second-hand tyres are killers like HIV/AIDS’.

The executives at Ladipo market, the most popular auto market in Lagos, have asked traders in the market to stop selling fairly-used tyres. SON gave the traders until August 17th to get rid of the 'killer' tyres of face the wrath of the law.

I don't know if second tyres are killers like HIV/AIDS but I know they are so useless. I used to buy them...like every three months...lol. The brand new tyres were so expensive, so we settled for the N3/4k ones that will serve you for just a few months...if you're lucky! :-)

¶ strongly agree with SON. Just 4 days ago, ¶ had an experience as one of M̶̲̥̅γ̲̣̣̥ front tokunbo tyres got burst on motion; it was ǦØD̶̲̥̅̊ that helped me τ̅☺ be able τ̅☺ manoeuvre n parked well. ¶ have never been an ardent buyer of these so called tokunbo tyres as it was M̶̲̥̅γ̲̣̣̥ mechanic that introduced it τ̅☺ me. Τ̅☺ me, it I̶̲̥̅̊s̶̲̥̅̊ 100percent accepted!

I HAVE NOT BEEN COMMENTING AFTER READING NEWS FROM UR BLOG BUT THIS IS REALLY BEGINNING TO GET ME ANNOYED NOW. EVEN HERE IN LONDON, SECOND HAND TIRES ARE USED. WHY DO WE ALWAYS DONT CONSIDER OUR LOW INCOME EARNERS, WE ALWAYS LEAVE THE MAJOR CAUSE OF A PROBLEM AND START TO CHASE SHADOWS. THE PROBLEM WE HAVE GOT IS NOT ABOUT THE SECOND TIRES BUT LACK OF GOOD ROADS, EVEN IF YOU BUY BRAND NEW TIRE AND USE IT IN THOSE POT HOLES INFESTED ROADS, IT WILL STILL GET DAMAGED BEFORE YOU KNOW IT! PLS LINDA I KNOW YOU HAVE SUDDENLY BECOME THE MOUTH OF THE PEOPLE, JUST FIGHT FOR THE POOR, THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME ANY MORE BUT ABOUT THE MAJORITY WHICH ARE THE LOW INCOME EARNERS. DONT MIND THOSE THIEVES IN THE LEVELS, THEY DONT CONSIDER THE POOR THEY STOLE FROM. GOVT SHOULD GET OUR ROADS IN ORDER, DATS THE PROBLEM NOT THE SECOND HAND TIRES.

Agreed with what Kendo said. I resides in United Kingdom too and I bought fairly used tyres for my car couple of weeks ago, which the regulation said that: A minimum of 1.6mm in a continuous band throughout the central three-quarters of the tread width, throughout the whole of the circumference. It doesn't matter if the tyre is new or used one so far it can meet the legal requirement. The Nigeria police and the road safety have to up their game by enforced the law if there is any and the govt should repair roads that does greater damage to tyres on the road.

Their own pass second hand. 5th hand sef. Jst like their plans. Naija sef!

@Kendo,

You are spot on. The bad roads are the major problem we have in this country. There's no where in the South, yes the south that there's good road but in the North, where I lived for a while, the roads are super. Low income earners should be put into consideration before saying you'll pay second tyres. There are good belgium tyres, Accident is not our porttion in Jesus name.-Amaogechukwu.

People buy and sell used tyres in New York city. I used to buy them when I was driving taxi, but not anymore since I stopped. It comes very handy when you cannot afford new ones. Just like the previous commenters, it's not the tyres, but the roads. There are very very good used tyres, and very bad ones too.

New ones are costly. Maybe subsidy will help a poor man.www.brandigest.wordpress.com

New tyres r rily expensive n most pple can't afford it sef.all dis govt officials can chase shadow sha,fix bad roads n start doing ur work fRSC,VIO n police, cos overload n poorly maintained cars cause accidents too.Soon dey wil say we ve bin banned frm driving Tokunbo cars, only tear rubber cars wld b allowed. Mtshewwwwww

SON needs to regulate the type of fairly used tyres that are sold. Banning it completely is a bit too much. New tyres are quite costly for most people. That singular act will turn a lot of transporters to joblessness thereby increasing the already dire security situation in the country. And its actually easy to regulate - every tyre has a lifespan written on it.

Should they be selling it in the first place? With the nigeria roads and weather(the very hot weather), Nigeria need a strong and stndard tyres.
In dubai they produce their own tyre that fit their road condition.

Good luck

With the way the roads are in nigeria a brand new tyre won't even last!!they should think of fixing the roads 1st b4 bringing up the issue of scrapping tokunbo tyres!!how about people that cnt afford to buy brand new tyres??y do our so called leaders think of irrelevant issues when there are major issues on ground to be addressed...

A good move.

First let me say, I use 2nd hand tires. It has never given me a problem. And av even had a set for more than a year now, if u see them, u'd think I bought them new.

When buying go with a Vulcaniser, and tip him for the job, they know the ones to by and how to check them.

Am not saying u shouldn't buy new tires, but just as tokumbo cars, its wot serves some nigerians,or should tokumbos be labelled hiv cars too?

The major causes of accidents on our roads funnily, are not tires. More like brake failure, impatience, drink driving, trailers, tankers and container vehicles; potholes, check points and robbers.

Its another case of putting the cart before the horse. Oil marketers are corrupt-increase oil price; manufacturing companies are not operating because of unhealthy working environment- ban all related 2nd hand/imported goods!

How about stem corruption and create a basic amenities and watch how other things will fall in place?

I'm not advocating for fairly used uses but I must say there some first grade and lovely fairly used types. So much so that when you see ,them, you'd take them for new ones. Just ensure you go for a first grade. I've been using some for a while without hassles
