Govt extends drivers’ licence expiration to 5 years

The Corps Marshal and Chief Executive Officer of Federal Road Safety Corps - Boboye Oyeyemi, has announced that the Federal Government has approved the extension of the validity period of Drivers licence to five years. This decision was taken by the Joint Tax Board at its 134th meeting held recently in Kano.
In a chat with Transport Editors in Lagos, the Corps Marshal said rather than Drivers’ licence expiring in three years, drivers now had the option of settling for either three or five years licence.

This however comes with different price tags. Drivers who want the three years' license are to pay N6,000 while those who opted for the five years' licence would pay N10,000.00

I see! Most people would want that of 5 years. Let's assume those prices will be like 15k and 10k respectively by the time issuing officers add their own margins. Welcome to Naija.

This is not how things are done in other climes! Why do we get it wrong all the time simply because of pecuniary reasons? This sort of double standards furthers to breed corruption. Why not set a national expiry standard? Something as sensitive as drivers license am afariad should not be left in the hands of licensees to decide term to expiration on the grounds of affordability. State a term policy and put a pin on that so all sorts of licenses doesn't spring up. It's bad enough with this one date of three years let alone making it two different terms of here or there. Licenses have been extended to a five year term simple! All those who have the once for three years upon expiration should know they will now be issued with the once with longer term of five years when renewing. Adverts/sensitization in that regard should also be embarked upon vigorously. We just keep loosing it everywhere, haba!!!

would find all means to extort money from us.
same thing with the international passport which is 5year, instead of 10yrs like every other country.

Other countries driving license is 10 years but Nigeria will want drivers to come back after every 3years so the new oga will chop his share.

With how much to get it?

I don't know why I should renew my drivers license every 3 years, which is like a Social Security card in the states. international passport lasts more than that and all these are forms of identity. Which way Naija!
