Soyinka calls on Buhari to convene an economic summit now

Worried by the declining state of the Nigerian economy, Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has called on President Buhari to immediately convene an economic summit where Nigerians can brainstorm on how to get the country out of it. Soyinka said this during a courtesy call to the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed in Abuja yesterday February 18th.

"I agree with those who say the economy is bad. It is obvious and it is so bad. I think the Presidency should call an emergency economic conference where experts will be enlightened. We really need an emergency economic conference, bringing experts together to march the nation forward. I think the economy is not encouraging. Quite frankly, I think most economists will agree with this.”he said

Imagine Soyinka telling a so called President what he is suppose to do. Here is where the term "cluelessNess" comes in. BUHARI has no clue whatsoever on how to rule a country. BUHARI MUST be thrown into the lion's den for all the lies and promises he said he will do as soon as he becomes president

Sir this is quite a laudable idea but if u look @ Nigerian history, nothing is ever implemented when it comes to summits & confabs. The national confab in the last regime gulped millions of naira as allowances & TP for the participants but what has become of the reports from the confab?
If you ask me, instead of wasting money on anything be it mic, paper or pen @ the summit, the Govt should read the goings on on social media, political & economic forums & fish out some important ideas from there. The government too has economic advisers , let em start giving important ideas or get fired.
If all has failed, come & pick Bonario & some enlightened Nigerians here. They'll absolutely deliver.

The starting point should be an overhaul of the Police and Judiciary, because if no law can be enforced and justice served timely, economic policies simply wont work because people will simply disobey the law or feel their investment is not protected enough and rather invest somewhere else. Economically, one of Nigeria's biggest problem is the interest rate, I know inflation is part of the reason why it is high, our MPC should have a inflation target of 5% for a start or less because banks are too smart to ever borrow money to anybody to invest in this time of diversification without any action, at a rate less than inflation. Also, Nigeria can only become wealthy through capital investments that will move our LRAS to the right, if we don't get the cost of borrowing to expand the economy right, we will remain where we are and note more poverty and insecurity is on the way, if we cant grow the economy and the population keeps exploding without birth control. The diversification of Nigeria's economy to ensure most Nigerians benefit and jobs are created and spending power increased should start from the primary sector, because if we jump to promote our secondary and tertiary sectors, we will end up importing with foreign exchange those crucial items we failed to get from our own primary sector, an example of this is investing in giving citizens tricycles which is service sector, it did not create as much wealth as it should have, because those tricycles had to be imported, if all the state governments that wanted to import tricycles rather invested in a factory where tricycles could be manufatured, it will have been better although backward integration to make the tricycle from raw materials in Nigeria to finished product will have been the best, any sort of backward integration adds value and jobs to the economy. The long term vision should be to ensure that Nigeria builds comparative advantage in areas which ordinarily should belong to her, while still keeping the whole value chain from raw materials to finished products ready for export within the economy. As our primary and secondary sectors grow, automatically the services sector will grow as new businesses like fast foods, organized retail, long haul logistics companies, supply chain management companies will spring up to serve the emerging winners from the booming primary and secondary sectors and also their well earning employees hence creating jobs and income for a whole lot of people. As growth starts VAT and other revenues to government will have to be taken seriously or the government finds itself in a situation, where a lot of individuals are richer than it is and can bribe their way out of any situation and the whole system collapses again and we start from square 1.

Of course frm d on-set, evry reasnable nigerian shud hv knwn dat buhari's govt wil fail woefully cos der's no idiagbon now to help him record d lil his govt did last tym. Evn tho he smartly chose a yoruba man as his vice, being yoruba does nt make Osinbajo Idiagbon.

Uncle Wole, thanks for waking up.

It was obvious to all during the elections that PMB and his party were without an economic plan but your hatred for GEJ made you all blind to this fact and you refused to ask APC to prepare or present a plan.

Well I will say with all honesty thank you so much Wola Soyinka for saying that bitter truth if I happened to be buhari is to resign honourably just to save the country we all agree the previous administration was corrupt and motivated insecurity in the north east. But was far better than this with 1 dollar to close to 400 my Good people of Nigeria this country belongs to all of us not selected few who are evil forces casting spare of ill economic on us with their brooms there by leading to untold hardship let us removed sentiment blaming previous government will always make matter worse for us excuses is the grand father of failure please hack to Wola Soyinka advice please we are all hard pressed with inflation

Mr. M. Buhari is busy chasing IPOB, MASSOB, TOMPOLO and looters of public funds while he should be busy growing the economy
There is something called Scale of Preference, the economists should educate him.
He has the last 1 and half to two years of his administration to do so....that would even earn him more votes for a second term.
Seems he needs to spend more time with the Commonsense Senator for Enlightenment lectures( Common sense is not common 101)

Wowwwwwww! Thought buhari has always been right in everything he does even when it's obvious he needs an economic adviser, now the economy is declining that you all realize that. That's the amazing change we are waiting for and everyone of us are enjoying the heat. More surprises change is about to hit Nigeria economy pretty soon, if cares isn't taken. Anyways one thing is for sure,God can never forsake his people cos when there's a casting down, there's a lifting up, isrealites during Pharoah s administration Wil bear me witness for God put a boundary between Egyptians and isrealites during the plague, while Egyptians are feeling the heat, isrealites were enjoying, those that have the seal of the blood of Jesus won't suffer cos he's our Shepherd and we Wil not want. Nice try oga whole.

I disagree with Soyinka....

What Nigeria needs is a change in government....

I mean a revolution....

The illiterate called Buhari is a misfit, a disaster, and is destined to deliver Nigeria's neck to the hangman!!!!

IMPEACH BUHARI NOW!!!!!!!!

It's unfortunate this is coming from Soyinka; however I agree the president should do the needful, may be sit down in his office for just two weeks, look outside his northern cabinet and re assemble a well informed buisness minded, experience and exposed team to tackle the urgent need of reviving/saving our great nation.
