Nigeria vs South Africa immigration law: Game on!

Last week, the South African government deported 125 Nigerians, accusing them of having fake yellow fever certificates.

So yesterday, Nigerian immigration refused 28 South Africans entry into Nigeria, accusing them of....erm, I'm sure they had their reasons...:-). The South Africans had entered Nigeria via South African Airways, but weren't allowed to leave the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. They were all sent back home.

Now Nigeria's foreign minister, Olusegun Ashiru, has issued the South African government a warning to either behave to face sanctions from Nigeria. So proud of my country. Let's Rock n Roll!

South Africa is far better than Nigerian according to all the indices of power politics so we can't in. In any case, the Federal Govt should face people coming in from Niger and Chad as well as other Boko haram areas rather than South Africans. I am sure Nigerians went there with fake certificates in the first place. In 1983, Shagari govt tried this rubbish with the UK at a time when one didn't need a visa to get to the UK. And now UK Visa is like gold to most Nigerians. I wonder who won, UK or Naija

All this do me i do you behaviour would not even be necessary in the first place if the bloody nigerian government would take care of its citizens the world over! its because the govt doesnt give a hoot what heppens to its citizens abroad that other countries treat them anyhow. is it not the same nigeria that supported the oppressed blacks when aparthied wanted to finsh all of them? now they are big boys they can be sending people out of their country because of yellow card. if Nigeria had retained its title of giant of Africa in all ramifications and not just in name, would they have tried this? can SA deport USA citizens anyhow? they dare not and thats because they know USA govt does not even play with its citizens.

anyway, laws are laws, and if the country requires u to come in with valid yellow fever papers, nigerian can like to try and get original papers, i dont doubt that the papers were in fact fake cuz i know for a fact that they sell them to willing passengers at MM international airport.

Linda at the risk of sounding a little insulting, can you please get a real education?! I fear what might be if your likes becomes involve in politics - at your age and with your current mentality!!! Your blog site is in a position to instigate positive change and you can steer the multitude in the right direction, but not with childish statements such as this. Ever, heard of the term - Diplomacy, yes Diplomacy, it's a policy best used by politicians to avoid unnecessary fracas with a neighboring countries. What's the ratio of Nigerians to South Africans visiting each country? How many south Africans do you think would leave their country and make Nigeria home? We need this people and their expertise. Politics is not a child's play, it's time the politicians and yourself grow up and get a REAL education!!! PS- Not posting this means zilch to me but damn woman read!

I support this government for this reason alone. I'm happy that they didn't turn a blind eye to this form of discriminiation against nigerians in S.A

What the south african did was proper because practically all nigerians there have fake yellow, which most travelers to south africa know.this incident only shows how a country is suppose to function. This a warning call for nigerians to really look into our diplomatic ties with these south africans. A lot on nigerians already above 6000 immigrants are been detained for months, one the excuse that they don't have yellow card or they have expired visas or they have over stayed. These people do not have respect for us, they see us as dis-united people. We have to adopt or reciprocate these same hospitality that was given to us by them back to them too. They are not superior than us,

but its true naa, many nigerians are not immunized. they all have fake cards. instead of us to face the issue at hand, we de form. lol. and linda, i de shame for u. do u have all ur immunizations? they are trying to sanitize their country and we with our bad head wan go spoil am.

It's about time Nigeria does something about this SA govt. How soon they've forgotten all Nigeria did for them during the dark days of apartheid regimes, being in the forefront against the white regime. Most SA freedom fighters and their people studied on scholarship in Nigerian Universities. Nigeria can literally ground SA's economy today if they venture into economic war with Nigeria. It is very sad that SA sees Nigeria in bad light. Their investments in Nigeria is so huge that if boycotted could be very devastating to them no-good-forget-too-soon guys.

I'm not sure it is something to be proud of.

You know as well as everyone else that those cards are not worth the ink stamped on them. You can buy them on the way to the airport for a measly sum. They are a country that are trying to do well by their people and prevent diseases from coming into their country.
Do we have a legal leg to stand on? Did those people obtain legitimate yellow cards? We are listed as a country at risk for Yellow Fever (read http://www.nigeriahealthwatch.com/2012/03/on-yellow-fever-yellow-cards-nigeria.html).

Even if this is politically motivated, there are still honest concerns to be had about this country's management (or lack thereof) of disease monitoring and tracking.

the Nigerian government is so childish and senseless. do they south african government not have a right to deport immigrants who are in the country with illegal documents? even the US does this. The Nigerian government is just indirectly encouraging its citizens to keep on doing the wrong things. So you then send South Africans who arrived the country with valid papers and passports back as a retaliation to what their govt did to ur pple for having invalid papers? Ridiculous!!!!!

So is the Nigerian government confirming that the yellow cards (or is it yellow fever certificates) were indeed real and the South African government was just being mean or is this the Nigerian government being childish again?

Just because we are not serious about our own infection/ disease control and immunization coverage does not mean we should insist that South Africa should become like us.

Mr Segun Ashiru you have done wrong o.

Cynthia said...

Although they had fake yellow fever certificates but that is not enough to depot them. The thing is that if this silent fight continues, it will generate to somethin more serious and our people over there will suffer it the most. Finding your way to that country is not easy, then for you to be thrown out like that is really not fair.

Anonymous said...

Dats childish abeg!

Anonymous said...

OMG! I can't believe u guys!! So this childish, sentimental & stupid reaction by the Nigerian government is being applauded?!!! Is it that the people that were deported had yellow cards but were deported? Or all this stupid noise is just because a "(dis)honourable" senator or House of rep member was among the lot deported? This is sooo pathetic.... It's only God that will save Nigerians from Nigerians...

Anonymous said...

Whatever, if the certificates are fake, they are fake. Note I said if! Dark days of apartheid? As far as I am aware Nigeria wasn't the only country that participated in that battle. Sullivan Principles (African American) anyone?

Nigerians should really just get over themselves.....be proud of your government when women have good access to health care, are treated with dignity (see previous post on that poor woman) and you have power 24/7.

Mis-directed priorities...

Meakayas Baby rock on!

Anonymous said...

LMAO, but you know this will only make sense if Nigerians won't be trying to get into South Africa illegally till kingdom come (you know how we love to exit the suffering of this country). They need to talk with the SA government to see exactly why 125 people would be denied entry. Is it legal to get these cards from ANY hospital for travelling? These guys may or may not be closet xenophobes but I don't think they're stupid enough to deny Nigerians entry based on intolerance alone.

It is quite frustrating because I've been through it before. They basically made us take yellow fever vaccinations again. Understand that it is infection control which Nigeria is very poor at. I've seen random people in Nigeria selling yellow fever cards (at the airport)!!! Nigerians din understand the importance of a simple vaccine that they have to buy yellow fever cards. It is highly likely that they received info that this happens in Nigeria. They are simply protecting their country. Nothing wrong with that. Nigeria's response was childish though. My 2 cents.

If any of you have visited South Africa before, you will know the kind of crap Nigerians have to deal with. This was a deliberate attempt by the SA govt to make a mockery of Nigerians.

Yes, i know that these cards are sold at the airport but how do you explain that the ALL the nigerians on board ONE single flight happened to have fake yellow fever cards. Haba! Even if a greater percentage of the people bought it at the airport, at least 20 of then would have obtained theirs at the SA embassy here.

The money DSTV and MTN make in Nigerian alone surpasses all they make in ALL other african countries COMBINED!!! Nigerians can hardly work legitimately in South Africa without parting with RIDICULOUS amounts of money.

I dont blame them, its the Nigerians that keep going there to do God knows what. Imagine paying a N100,000 deportation fee before getting a stupid 3 month visa. Only in Naija.... UK visa is now for sale too, oshisko!!!

femi said...

LINDA, how can you be proud of your country?? You fall my hand seriously. I'm not sure of what exactly is going on but refusing entry to SA's just to retaliate is acting stupid because more likely than not, the Nigerians refused entry into SA deserved it. You should not condone such behavior and I'm disappointed in you.

Anonymous said...

I think SA govt is just being heartless, cos I knw if u do not hv an original yellow card at point of entry in SA, u'll be directed to their clinic at the airport where u pay $100 to be vaccinated. Am saying this frm experience. Returning 125 passengers was just too harsh my dear.

Anonymous said...

for me i believe the Nigerian government did the right thing. Why would you let people fly 6hrs by air to SA then you deport them on the basis that their yellow cards of all things is false. in the SA visa application process you are supposed to submit your yellow card alongside your other documents. so what are is the SA govt saying that their embassy reps didn't do thorough reviews of the documents submitted by the applicants or what . some1 below talked about the worth of pple who holiday in SA what is that compared to the billions their multinationals are milking from naija day and night and the expatriate quota they enjoy. i'm glad that niaja's foreign affairs reacted in kind. we should in fact place tighter sanctions on SA cut their expatriate quota to just 2% of staff like they think naija no get brains. what is i the SA sef with all the slums dirtier than ajegunle. metchew!!!! lets wait and see who laughs last. this "arifin" has gasta stop. period.

anyone who says Nigeria's actions are childish does not understand international relations. How do the SA authorities spot a fake? Those docs are authorised by Nigeria and only Nigerian government can declare them fake. Its like being deported enmass cos nigerian passports are processed by touts.
Coming to the heart of the matter, yellow fever? Nigeria? we should screen them in return for Tuberculosis considering its prevalence in thier country.
this whole event are just acts in a political struggle. A fallout from SA's failure to impose its candidate as AU chief exec. Nigeria notably oppossed SA leading to the elections being deadlocked.
We need to be respected and not treated like the dregs of the earth. N.B SA will lose a lot if we stop thier coys doing business

Anon March 6, 2012 7:20 PM, u must be an illiterate to have allowed them to inject u 2x under 10yrs yellow fever vaccine just because u want to get into a damn country, do u want to kill yourself???? the fact of d matter is some of these people have used their cards to enter south africa and even some of them live n south africa, this country just does not like Nigeria and who says Linda & I shd not rejoice, infact i'll pop champagne for Abike Dabiri and Ashiru cause these people have bad hatred for Nigerians and i know what am saying. If more people r deported back to SA then i'll know Nigeria means business, fine they used to have airport medical station where they normally give people when they doubt d authenticity of their cards, but my questions is this right? these people r so wicked that when that clinic was running they wld use 1 injection for 20 people, like make dem go die na dem sabi and someone is here saying they sell cards @ d airport...like ur mouth - na u dey sell am? so u mean to tell me almost 200 passengers bought yellow fever cards @ d airport that night they were travelling HABA Nigerians if u dont stand for something - u'll fall for anything and moreover when u have dragged ur father's name in mud how do u want to clean it up, look @ what most of u r typing here, even if ur father has failed u, must u go to d public and tell d whole world ur father stinks - just because u want to prove a point??? pls give me a break, let d deportation continue and when it has cool down lets issue a warning, "NO HIV STATUS CARD, NO ENTRY TO SOUTH AFRICANS IN NIGERIA" simple as ABC, i totally support we pay them back in their own coins, how wicked can someone be? they hate us and they r not scared to show it, this is not a matter of card or no card, they r bringing the hatred out daily ask people who live n south africa, they'll tell u, enough s enough, there's nothing wrong in one citizen migrating to live n another country, even Americans relocate to another country to live, must we now all die cause we r looking for adventure or better life? they shd scramp and go and die with their xenophobia and hiv nonsense, southy my foot and as for MTN their days r numbered when they'll give out their sim cards for 0 naira and no one wl take it. mark it

Anonymous said...

All of you should get off linda's back! I am well informed on this matter and this is not about fake or no fake yellow fever cards. It is about breach if diplomatic protocol and courtesy. The south Africans also shot themselves in the foot and discredited their own embassy in Nigeria because to get a visa to south Africa one has to have presented it to the embassy. So are they saying their staff is incompetent in the visa issuing process? Also if they had issues with any Nigerian document that necessitated such sweeping action as deporting a plane load of passengers, it should have been reported to the Nigerian high commission first. This is about Nigeria not supporting Jacob zuma's wife for the AU council seat and going for gabon's candidate. Nigeria did RIGHT by me. As far as I know, south Africa has more corporate interest in Nigeria and they are about to become scape goats for their governments xenophobic attitudes and blatant disregard for bilateral agreements.

Commonsense said...

Nigerians need to humble themselves, man. I'm in support for diplomacy but let's also think some things through with our brain and use common sense, not out of do me bad, I will do you worse.

South Africa's school system is still better, therefore you have many Nigerians sending their children to schools in South Africa. There are also business opportunities there which means more Nigerians will go there for business. Also, you have Nigerians who are giving the country a bad name over there, so South Africans have every reason to attack other immigrants, even if their natives are doing the same thing. That's not the same for Nigeria.

It might actually hurt Nigeria more than anything. Like someone mentioned, why don't you look closely into ones who are coming from Islamic countries since terrorism is becoming a big problem in Nigeria.

At the end of the day, there are more Nigerians traveling to South Africa than South Africans actually traveling to Nigeria. So, be careful what you do to others because it will bite you in the butt.

U people that are saying nigeria's actions are childish are the same people that will complain when they tell u at d airport to fall into a separate line for additional screening, just because you are nigerian. Your government is speaking up for u and u r complaining

You are an idiot. MTN, GAME, Shoprite, Stanbic, Standard Bank, South African Airways making more money here than their country. Let's not forget DSTV. The norm for yellow fever cards - at the worst - innoculate in the airport for 100usd. We don't ask the South Africans to present prrof of clean HIV status - afterall statistics state that 1 in 7 South Africans is HIV positive. There is extreme xenophobia against Nigerians in South Africa. We know that except you - who must be ignorant as hell. If you have been following the story - you would understand better - though I doubt it - you are probably one of the Nigerians that disses the country while queuing up to take bs from other country"s embassies. Its not a win or lose situation - every country's citizens has a right to be treated with respect. 125 deported Nigerians is way to many for it to be just 'fake' yellow fever cards including children on excursion? Come on. I have friends in the aviation industry who tell me that the number of Nigerian corpses flown in from South Africa is higher than from any other country. There is also a designated Nigerian prison in Durban. Please think logically before espousing your colonial diatribe.

His name is Gbenga Ashiru. And yellow fever has not been an issue in Nigeria since 1994. Whereas South Africa has abysmal HIV and tuberculosis numbers. Plus Johannesburg as the murder capital of the world. So really - and like other pple have pointed out - u submit all your documents at the vfs visa center including yellow fever cards. 4o this means that their pre-scrutiny points and submission points missed all the fake yellow fever cards; then applications sent to the SA high commission missed them as well and still have out visas? Pls let us all get our facts right before shouting up&down that all the yellow fever cards were fake. I'm a nigerian citizen who has lived in SA for 5yrs+ and the yellow fever card I have, I got from South Africa. I took it at their airport but because I'm a nigerian, I was almost sent back because they assume nigerians are synonymous with fake documents. I had to ask them to call their clinic to confirm I got the vaccination from there. All they kept saying what "u bloody nigerians and ur fake documents" this incident happened on the 11th of Feb. So in my opinion they have been gunning for nigerians since. It didn't just start now

Well for all those saying Nigeria doesn't have anything to offer and that our leaders are childish for taking this action, better do your research very well o. If Nigeria has nothing to offer why do white people troop into this nation on a daily basis. I don't think this action is all about the deportation alone, we have taken enough shit from South Africa alone. The way they treat our issue they feel they are saints. Their country is also a notorious place as far as the whole world is concerned talk of violence, crime, drugs, HIV even rape. Have you heard that you have to pay repatriation fee if you are looking for South African Visa. They will collect the money under 24 hours but when your visa expires and you want to collect your refund they will tell you to submit the form and wait for the next 16 working days. But when they want to come to Nigeria no such shit. SA is fine yes but that is not enough reason for them to take Nigeria for a ride. We are not cowards, do me I do you. If they think we will crawl on our knees and beg them this time lets see who will loose out on the long run. We can only loose out on individual levels but on a national levels they will loose, all their factories will belong to us. And this thing Dangote is doing with them sef me I no know for them o but they better take their time o. BTW I am looking forward to going there next year so they better sort this row out fast so no one will delay my plans. Naija we hail thee.

At least the Nigerian government has the guts and muscle to act against a(n un)friendly government that misbehaves. Other weak governments are easily cowed by "big brother" South Africa!!!

for the 1st time i will say well done to Naija govt.

@Omo jeje said, stop talking crap.
the last case of yellow fever in this country was almost 20 yrs ago. Persons with genuine yellow cards were deported as the South Africans were just being paranoid. two brothers obtained the card from same source.one was admitted, the other deported.
They used to charge exorbitant fees at the airport (JHB) and give you the vaccine if they doubt the veracity of your papers.whatever happened to that?
If anyone wants to complain certainly not South Africa. They have the most corruption infested embassy in Nigeria, they have not sorted out the crap there and they are busy deporting flyers. An embassy that it is easier for a drug dealer to get a permanent residency before a genuine business traveller gets a visa. They need to be put in place. By the time customs seizes Shoprite and Woolworths goods at the port for months and charges them demurage they will sit up and face issues that ought to be faced.

very good.reading comments made by nigerians just tells me how we be little ourselves. infact, they need us more than we do. lets move to their businesses, especially MTN, and send them back. they need us more than we need them. As nigerians, we must learn to bliv in our nation. if our leaders steal monies, should we allow them to steal our hope, faith and aove all, self esteem? we must not sell ourselves so little.

I'm disappointed in all of you Nigerians supporting South Africa. The last known case of Yellow fever in Nigeria according to the UN is 1995 meaning Nigeria can be certified yellow fever free.
South Africa has the Highest case of HIV/AIDS in the world and their loose girls troop in here like water. We Should include HIV screenings as a criteria for all south africans ccoming here.

Anonymous said...

How would SA feel if Nigeria starts screening for HIV. Anyway they are entitled to let who ever they wish into their country. Nigeria now made it out to be a revenge thing. To the extent SA dey deport us...who next Chad?

Anonymous said...

Nigerian government is stupid!!! They should fix roads, electricity, education, and corruption then we won't have to carry fake visa's to south africa of all places. SA has every freaking right to deport whoever they want to deport if they did not comply with the law. This is absolute nonsense that Nigeria is doing. Let me guess.. they deported someone's wife, daughter, girlfriend??? hiss!

Goodluck Jonathan's BOLEKAJA DIPLOMACY & Comedy Central Reacting to South Africa's deportation of Nigerians. Including a Senator over Yellow Fever Certification.

"Barely 24 hours after the second batch of 56 South African deportees were sent home, the Nigerian government said it has uncovered a prostitution ring ran by a high profile South African businessman with 67 prostitutes in his employment both in Abuja and Lagos.
Consequently, the government has concluded plans to deport the 67 prostitutes who are believed to be HIV positive. The move is part of government deliberate policy to double the figure of the 125 Nigerians deported by South Africa before the consideration of any diplomatic solution to the lingering feud with the South African government." WERE YOU NEVER BROUGHT UP BY YOUR PARENTS NEVER TO SUPPORT ANOTHER COUNTRY OVER YOURS AND SPEAK ILL OF YOUR COUNTRY IN THE MIDST OF STRANGERS?! WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT, YOU ARE A NIGERIAN TOO SO YOU ARE INDIRECTLY BAD MOUTHING YOURSELF TOO. THE WAY YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY IS THE WAY OTHERS WILL PERCEIVE AND TREAT YOU. SO KEEP IT UP. A CHILD WHO GOES ABOUT TELLING PEOPLE THAT HIS MOTHER IS A PROSTITUTE SHOULD NOT BECOME UPSET WHEN OUTSIDERS REFER TO HIM AS A BASTARD. ENOUGH SAID!

A little bird told me that a senator (don't quote me o!) was amongst those deported - not sure if current or past...hence the hullabaloo...South Africans didn't understand 'do you know who I am?'

@Anon..talking about bastards..has Nigeria proven itself top be a good parent??..this is nothing but shameless nationalism..wish some of you exerted the same energy and passion against PDP and the other Sycophants running 9ja down...Ranting and raving against a nation that is already set up...Giants of Africa indeed!!..a country where buying a new car is celebrated rather than campaigning for better roads to drive on!!...
