Some Governors planning to reduce minimum wage/downsize their state civil service

Some governors have indicated plans to reduce the N18,000 minimum wage or downsize the civil service in their state. This plan was made known to newsmen by the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari after a meeting with President Buhari at the State house Abuja yesterday December 3rd.

Yari said the declining oil price which has affected the revenue generation of the country has in turn reduced the Federal allocations state governors get to address issues such as Salaries in their state.

The NGF Chairman said some state governors that have come out to say they will not be reducing the minimum wages in their state can do so because of the high revenue they generate internally. He said the poor state of infrastructure such as power has affected most states like Zamfara to increase their Internally Generated Revenues.
"Let me make it very clear to Nigerians, Governors’ Forum is not an enemy of labour in any way. Rather, we have been working together. I know that not only Gov. Wike but also my friend in the comradeship, Adams Oshiomhole, kicked against the decision. Although in the decision, we never said we are going to stop the payment of N18,000 minimum wage, but we are looking at the situation in the country and in the global economy. What we said was that when the National Assembly enacted the law of paying N18,000 minimum wage, then oil price was about $118 per barrel and today oil price is $41 per barrel. So, if it continues like that, definitely, we will find it difficult to continue. We have to sit down with the labour and see how we can review, either continue or downsizing or what we are going to do. We want to find a solution because we have to be realistic that we have so many things to touch. There is infrastructure deficit; there is a need for security; there are other things like social lives of our people and nation as a state. On the receipt from federation account, some states received N400m, N500m. Some others received N55m; two digits. And there are other issues, not even the salary, pension is over a billion. So, how can we continue borrowing and servicing the service aspect of our expenditure or overhead? How can we do that?. We are telling the public that we are planning to sit down with the President and his team and the state governors as a team and the experts to come out with the way forward and how we are going to handle the poor state of the economy in the country. But what we have on the ground now will not be realistic if it continues the way it is without having other sources from the economy and still relying on oil that was sold for $118 dollar per barrel and now down to $41, and think that we can continue behaving or misbehaving the way we are doing, if there is anything like that. Therefore, we are saying that we should tighten our belts. Something definitely, we should sit down and come out of it to find a way we are going to do it realistically or otherwise. If you don’t have infrastructure in place; you don’t have the energy to fire our industries, you have the issue of textiles, the issue of milling and so on and so forth. Therefore, how can we get revenue? Can we go door to door and start knocking for people to pay their own due when they are looking for their own and they hardly get at least two square meals daily? Can you knock on his door and ask him to pay government for development? So we know that it is trouble for us! We need to close ranks, both the federal and the state governments to see if we can sit down and settle this problem of the economy.”

The stupid thought patterns being exhibited by these people you voted into power never ceases to amaze me. What has 118 naira or 41 naira price of Oil got to do with the suffering masses meager 18,000 minimum wage? When will these people stop reasoning through their anuses? SO they are not even serious about the diversification plans they've been busy shouting here and there. Must we depend on oil sales to be able to pay our workers and make their lives better than they way they've been living to survive? If these dudes continue to cogitate in this manner, then this nation is doomed for real cos I know many countries who are not naturally endowed with resources yet their citizens are living far above our levels here in Nigeria that is blessed from all ramifications.

The governors who cannot do anything to improve on their internally generated revenue should kindly tender their resignation period.

Our leaders are so selfish, greedy amongst other horrible things. How can they even think of reducing the minimum wage? Im so pisses right now. They are actually giving reasons. Fine I've read the reasons and if that's the case then they should slash the huge amount of money they get which is nothing in this world compared to 18,000. As a matter of fact some of them even use double and even more than 18000 for lunch every day. No selfless leader. Just a greedy bunch! Im pretty sure if they slash the amount all governors get, commissioners, senators and the rest, the money left will even be enough for people do be paid way more than 18000. 18000 that isn't enough for one individual who has a family Ia what you wanna reduce later they'll say crime in the society is increasing but you literally gave them the go ahead to go so that. You're serving the people not the people serving you. You should even be the one getting paid 18000 in actually fact!

We understand Nigeria plight, what about if there's nothing like minimum wage, is there no other way we can handle this issues?you people should better come up with a better plan to avoid disaster in the country cos no one is happy about how things is turning out. People are suffering instead of devising a strategy to alleviate this poverty and you people are creating more by slashing the minimum wage. Don't forget they are humans and have needs to take care of, imagine ur selves in their shoes, Wil you people be happy to accept that? Hmmm!

Rubbish we can start with the Senate salary. Let's reduce it by 50% governors by 40% before talking about reducing minimum wage if an ordinary govt worker foolish and selfish forum

Gov. Wike is only doing this because of the re-election. Politicians do the same thing again and again, and expect us to believe them SINCE WE ARE THEIR FOOLS. I heard Osun sate gov was owing some months before his re-election and when the elections were close, he paid. After that, on your own, to the workers. So, what will the minimum wage be reduced to? 9k? Ok. What will the governors and legislators wages be reduced to? Security vote nkò?

I hope dey reduced there own salary and other allowances. Cos dey can give up dere wardrobe allowance and use it and make up for the minimum wage.

Let them downsize, they will know the meaning of people power!

Were they elected to form a Governors Union against the masses or work for their welfare? How many of them can publish the security votes they collect monthly and show what they do with it?

Many of them would be shooed out of their luxurious homes without waiting to pick their caps.

The people voted them in and once they decide to inflict more hardships on the masses, they must prepare for harder times too.

I am absolutely not in support of the reduction in the minimum wage. In fact, it should even be increased for the lowest Cadre of staff. However, why are the Governors and most analysis fixated on the 18k? It's not like everyone the government employs earns 18k and in fact most do not as government employs teachers, lecturers, nurses, doctors, engineers, architects etc and none of these earn 18k a month. Even majority of office staff earn more than 18k, so I assume the Governors are talking about reducing everyone's salary?

Having said that, while I do not support reducing salaries, I do support retrenchment. The truth is that in most government offices people sit down doing nothing. I went to federal secretariat in PH to renew my passport and the amount of offices I walked past where staff were seated and doing relatively nothing were too many to mention. Same goes for the civil service. The public sector is grossly over staffed. How many banks have you entered where people were standing doing nothing?

your bloody salaries and allowances were set when oil was N118 as well so downsizes your freaking salaries and allowances and also the size of your stupid government expenditure before downsizing public sector salaries... Common Sense!!
