Exam papers for Nursery toddlers in a Lagos Private School

A LIB mum sent this in. She feels these are inappropriate questions for toddlers in nursery school
"Dear Linda, I am a worried parent. I wish to have the attached doc published on your blog for the public to see and for parents to be informed of what schools of this generation have become ( n.b their school fees run up to 200k per term). I think the questions are totally inappropriate and out of place for Nusery. The have replaced the learning of alphabets and numbers as well as the basic colouring of fancy objects for ambiguous questions for a Nusery toddler." she wrote
See the rest after the cut and tell us if you agree with this worried mum...

Hmmmmmmm, foul cry 4d best place for her to channel her communication to is d school not via public statement or LIB. All d same thanks for sharing it wit us.

If am to share my view on dis I wil say it's not really ideal setting questions of dis nature for these young lad's. It kills their brain to learn fast for learning is a gradual process.

Ok this is crazy. How do they expect a child in Nursery 1 to answer these Qs? Those kids should be just abt 2 years old.

Whatever happened to ABCD!

Anonymous said...

I don't see anything wrong with it. If they are up to 3yrs and above its perfectly ok depending on there exposure and environment. You start early to stimulate young ones. It's a catch them young phenomenon. At this age there brains and mind acts like a sponge. There is nothing wrong about it. It's for brain stimulation and development. It's an exposure not necessarily a must that they'll get them, but they've been exposed to it and goes a long way in registering.

Unknown said...

this is not appropriate at all, these should be Primary 5 exam question

Anonymous said...

I am sure the children can answer the questions. Read the stories of the 50 smartest children in the world. Some of them started as early as 2 years to read and write. Esther Okada at 10 is already in the University. Madam I feel your pains cause at her age you cannot attempt any of the questions. Allow the school to do what they are trained for our children are way ahead of us.

Unknown said...

This are too hard for a toodler to answer in western world they just do songs and behaviour test and plays watsup with all dis computer question pls carry ur child to preschool or creche if they refuse to listen to u

Anonymous said...

Haba this is too much nah!!! WTF is wrong with them in that school?! Even British or American curriculum isn't like this! Madam abeg take you rkids out of that school, they don't know what they should be teaching at nursery level!

ary said...

If you pay 200k for nursery school, you should expect that your kid learns rocket science in school! I don't understand the basis of this parent's fear. I have seen a seven year American kid read the "American declaration" like it was a nursery rhyme. I have seen American kids below 10 reel out the names of all the American Presidents; in chronological order, so madam, the brain is never too young to stimulate, be happy that you are getting value for your money and not vice versa.

Unknown said...

It's okay I don't see anything wrong Kuala Lumpur

Unknown said...

I would say that its a bit complex for a child/toddler in nursery school. These questions ought to be for primary 2 pupils. The mother should channel her grieviances to the proprietor.

How can a Nursery one pupil write??
That's bizarre. Only if they ask them the question and then the teacher fills in the answer. Apart from that, the child is too small to write and know most those questions

Anonymous said...

Its obvious the person who sent this doesn't have a child. This is the normal standard of education now.my son is in same class as this in abuja which is pre KG or KG 1.The questions are read to them one at a time and the teacher ticks the answer. The kids don't read themselves. My son can answer this questions and much more.its no big deal

For a nursery 1 kid? This is absurd. I think this is one of the reasons the retention level is @its minimum among Nigerian kids. They are overloaded with so much info from childhood, and again, there's no diversification in teaching styles.

Though too high a standard for toddlers in nursery 1 but am sure they must have taught them those things for them to be on their exam. If you are not comfortable with that as a parent, them take your child somewhere else.

haba Linda .I think the mum is exaggerating

Why is she worried? Is it that the questions are too cheap or difficult? There is absolutely nothing wrong for toddlers to be given these kind of questions.

This is totally insane and shocking!!!! Are you sure this school is run by educational professionals or just thieves looking to make money? For starters, those answers were not (and can not be) written in by the children who i want to believe being in Nursery One, are about age 3. I will advise the lady who posted this to withdraw her child from that excuse of a "school". In Nursery One, children should be learning the sounds of the letters of the alphabets, identifying numbers 1-20, blending 2 and 3 letter words etc. They are NOT expected to have written exams. I cannot even begin to say how wrong and dubious this is otherwise, i would go on forever. So sad that owing a "Private School" in Nigeria now is simply a business about making money and not for the sake of quality education.

And you wondered just yesterday about ten years old knowing about politics. This is a bit much because nursery 1 would be about 3/4 years old.so this is questionable.

But which kind of cowardly parent is this? Is,Linda an educationist?Linda can barely write a complete error free text.

I'm bold to say this parent has no clue what her rights are as a fee paying parent otherwise,LIB isn't the platform to go.The school might also be private but its not a proper, school.NO good school will set this questions for a nursery class.NONE!!! Except a wanting to belong in the category of private schools school.Someone probably erroneously typed nursery 1 instead of primary 1.

I challenge this post. Not you but the authenticity and credibility of this post.

Wow! Nothing is actually wrong with the questions. I am a teacher myself and I know how these things play out. You people should bear in mind that there is no mountain too high to climb. I believe that school is trying to create a high standard. Though the questions there are difficult but at the same time it will stretch the pupils and make them better in life tomorrow. I read a story about a south korean man called Kim. At the age of 6 or 7, the guy was already dealing blows to difficult equations. Why because of the foundation. Madam, my advice is this, play your own part as a responsible parent by supporting the teachers of your child to achieve that common set goal of making your child a wonderful person in future.

Unknown said...

This is very appropriate for nursery 1 if you ask me. But never mind dear mum, the kids are not expected to read at this stage. The questions are administered by having a teacher read to the child, explaining the question in simple terms the child understands before the child answers. My daughter's school gives them this level of questions and my explanation is how they deal with it. Cheer up, pls.

I have taught before and i do know that for children in Nursery 1. The teachers ask them the questions and when they reply, the teachers write their answers on their answer sheet because at their age, which is 3-4years. They can not write apart from the alphapet.
The method through which these pupils are taught is demonstrative and illustrated teaching. I personally think that those questions are briliant for a child in nursery 1 because the teacher must have been using physical objects to ask them the questions.

Unknown said...

Rubbish! I was once a teacher and there's no problem with the questions. The kids are that all these majorly by singing it to them and they go home and sing it to their amazed parents and are 100% ready to pass it as a test or exam.
All the teacher does is read the question and options to the students, and ask them to circle the right answer and I tell u, these amazing kids get 80-100%

Good morning everyone, i totally agree with the mother. This is the totally inappropriate. I am an undergraduate and even right now in school, in any IT course, we are thought some of those topics that have the above questions to refresh our memory. Whatever the reasons of the school may be, it is not right as those children are still very young and the coloring and paintings, form part, in fact a whole lot of what develops them.

Those type of questions could be for the "exceptional or special" children whose IQ are above normal but even with that, they will still need to be groomed in the artistic parts.....

She really needs to raise a complaint about this. May God bless "Our leaders of tomorrow"

Every school has a particular curriculum it runs and sure the children must have been taught. At their level it is garbage in garbage out. guess the teacher reads and they answer. If you think you are not getting value for money then, take your child elsewhere. Best is try to understand the curriculum/syllabus of the school before hand. Have you also assisted in their homework before because you should have known what goes on before in the school before now. Have you registered your complaint with the school also? My advise to parents is to BE CLOSELY INVOLVED in the lives of our children!

Linda...I am a father of two kids. I have for long felt so bitter about this issue but anybody I complain to seem to be okay with it. Infact, parents are happy to have their kids learning this stuff at a tender age! I have changed my children's school but I discovered its the same everywhere...even worse.

I spoke with my sons teacher and she said its the Ministry of Education that revised the curriculum. She said by the time the kids are in Pry 4, they would be ready for Sec school. Pls where are we rushing to? We want to be like Oyinbo, but they are not treating their kids this way. Upon all this stress by the time the kids get to the University, the standards fall to the bottom. I'm tired of this and don't know whom to complain to, maybe by putting it on your blog, this issue will get the deserved attention and will be corrected by the education authorities.

My son is now in Primary one. Some of the textbooks are full of grammatical errors, the spelling tests they give to the kids are long and complex words that even some Uni students cant spell. I saw the composition question in my sons english exam. A full A4 page. O' level standard. They exepect a 5 year old child to read and answer the questions. I honestly dont know what education has become in this country.

My daughter is 2 years and in kindergarten. Instead of singing nursery rhymes and playing. They are already learning how to read and write 1 -10. E just tire me o

Good morning, I totally agree with the mother. The questions are so inappropriate. I am an undergraduate and even in school right now, we are taught some of the topics that contains the above questions so as to refresh our memory.

Though the questions could seem fit for the "exceptional or special" children whose IQ medically, has been diagnosed to be above normal ;they also will need the artistic parts (paintings and drawings) that will develop and groom them.

Those paintings and drawings part should not at all be neglected by the school no matter what their reason may be; as these parts will help to develop the children in fact, they are really important and are fun to do.They develop the children mentally and in various ways.

She needs to take this up and demand an explanation from the school. God bless our "leaders of tomorrow", God bless our country.

Anonymous said...

I don't agree with her. Those questions are direct and has Just two options to pick from. U will be amazed the way children grabs. Moreover, most of the questions are what we use or do on a daily basis e.g fan, monitor, president. Etc. The only one am against is dat of the brain of a computer. Will implore parents to always engage their kids in educative programs and not cartoon orAfrican juju (magic). Dis age and time is soaring!!!

Unknown said...

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the questions! If they have not thought the pupils, the questions will not be set. I am sure this is a parent that watches telemundo all day. If you don't like the questions, withdraw your child and send him/her to ELEJA PRIMARY SCHOOL.

This is totally inappropriate. I have said it over and over again, Nigerian kids are subjected to abuse in pre-school all in the name of education....very sad.

What kind of stupid nursery exam is this??? This should be primary 4 exams now. How can someone set exams like these for children in nursery school??? The school authority must be kidding. What nonsense

She sounds frustrated because doing homework with her child aint easy breezy. The homework challenges her and she ain't trying to have that. Hire a tutor, hon, and take yourself out of your misery. Pushing children at a young age is good for them.

the school is trying to justify their fee, but in an untowed way. pupils in nursery 1 are between the ages of 3-5 and at that age the sensory skills is what should be harnessed. parents should be careful as well, we imagine that a school is good cos of the price hike. God help our educatonal system.

I don't think the questions are inappropriate. My little girl attends a public school in England and can tell you the planets in the universe. Their counterparts in China have already started addition and multiplication. At this age is the best to get them to learn fast and besides these generation knows more than we give them credit. If you claim you pay 200k per term you obviously want to bring out the best in your child.

Menh! This is. Really absurd, is iit going to be read to them abi they kids will do the reading and answering. Na primary one work b dis. Shuuuu

This are the questions they ask my 3 year old in pre nursery one and he answers them well some things my son knows and teach me shock me atimes . They also do creative art painting etc. As far as your child understands and know them why not

This is not acceptable. For goodness sake, the nursery class(es) are for at most five year olds and these five year olds are still more or less babies. Being a mother myself; have learnt that you can only teach and encourage your child to excel and back it up with prayers. In as much as we want our children to excel and be the next Solomon of our time MUST allow them enjoy their childhood.

its same with most schools now. the standard is high for their age but surprisingly they are catching up. I have a child in the same clsss (nursery 1) who can answer the questions, that goes to show that they are following. i see it as part of CHANGE in life.Education has attained another height unlike during our time. pls dont forget that those questions will be read out to them only for them to provide the answers needed. NOT wrong to me.

Interesting. Well, in my opinion it looks a bit too advanced. But giving it a second thought, the Teachers won't set these as Exam questions if they didn't take their time to teach them in Class and most likely TEST them. We all know that generally, they are Test periods before Exams. You'll be surprised they will get good scores!

QUESTION 1: What's the age range of a/the Nursery 1 pupil?

QUESTION 2: Were they taught these Lessons in Class? If 'YES' the Child gotta deliver! His/her brain can suck up so much now! The Child has to deliver. God forbid 'Johnbull' o.

Wow! I think d questions are too hard for d class indicated even if they were taught in class

Big realities said...

In nursery 1 they should still be learning how to write alphabets because children at this stage should be between 3-4 years. This is way over their syllabus haba. Over skill dey kill monkey oo

tee babyyy said...

Ahn ahn wait fest.. lllemmme read d questions again....are they mad???

sisi said...

This is actually out of place . Most schools are gradually loosing focus.

The woman must be foolish this is appropriate in fact I praise them. How I wish I can enroll my child in to that school.

Anonymous said...

These questions are not too much for this class. My exception is TV as television and d rest. It also depends on the age limit set for this class in the school. Parents should allow their kids to mature before sending them to school.

Unbelievable though don't be surprised these kids know some of the answers cos they have been made to chant them everyday to justify the high school fees paid, schools don't allow the kids discover themselves or even know how to hold pencil well before bombarding them. The school regulators too are to be blamed. KYLA

I still don't understand why a child under 5 should go to school at all. It's like potty training- children don't get it until they can get it. All they do in school is sleep and get exposed to infections which they can catch very easily (their immune systems are still developing). These exam questions should be for year 3 pupils.

I v been telling my sister about this, how can a child be made to write 16 subject in nursery schl, and what ll a child do with all these now, the brain of a child is too tender to be loaded with all these,I don't blame the owners of private schls, the educational system has collapsed, and private schls spring up everyday, with secondary school leaver as teachers. I remember my primary school days, I stiil remember most of the things I learnt then. May God help this country.

TKB's thoughts said...

Well well well! You know all these so called schools would like to justify the outrageous fees they collect from parents. That said,I guess these questions will be asked orally, though it seems too above the scope of what a nursery 1 pupil should do, its not that bad. Most kids use smartphones, parent's IPAd and other gadgets...Its the new age! Just that Children are deprived of their right to childhood, and forced to adulthood before time

No offense but I don't get what's so wrong with the questions, quite alright the questions are not for nursery students but isn't data good thing, ur kids will have high iqs by the time they enter primary school

nicky Skimpy said...

Are u kidding me? Do they want to make the kids professors overnight? I wonder why some parents keep enriching proprietors when they can always get even a better value @ a less expensive but quality giving schools. Na wa oooo

steve147 said...

this is way too much for those kids, even some LIB readers will fail some of this questions to be frank.

Wow this too much

I fully agreed with her. Because my little nephew question in nursery 1, who is just 2years old was asked terrible questions also just like this. I wish there re places to put photos here, would have. Those questions are inappropriate for them, because there re stages of everything in life.

My kid attends private sch in Lagos now Private school in Ilorin. She came home with similar questions for nursary class in ilorin. what i do is to ask her those questions and she does well. School Syllabus has changed. I also complained when she just started. But its okay.

Eastner said...

I totally agree with this mother...These questions are way way higher than what toddlers in nursery school should be learning...
I hate how private schools feel they must somehow account for the bogus money they demand from parents by getting children to do more than they are capable of at this stage...It's too much..

Unknown said...

Am sure it wa an error from the teachers. Omowunmioghidi@yahoo.com

Please there's no big deal in this. Children of nowadays that are very intelligent.

What!? These questions for Nursery pupils? Or was it a mistake ni? Was the paper meant for Pry students?

Anonymous said...

You see some schools where they get nursery 1 pupils to memorise the multiplication tables - up to multiples of 12!! What they need at this stage is love, care, lots of fun with mostly pictorial stimulation. This school's approach is why our society is churning out detached teens and adults with zero emotional intelligence

U are so old school mama pikin, these schools have a syllabus that they follow, this is 2015 different curriculum.. Mind you they still do Arts and craft where they play with drawings and colouring... So madam go and kpon kpi for one corner....

trishtima said...

am guesing they are still doing those things you want, this can only b additional types of question and it looks fun bcus they ar using some of the images they must have painted in class to ask d question

olawale29 said...

Totally inappropriate. These were types of questions given to my boy when he was in nursery 1 or 2. I was furious because these are not the foundation those children need now. What happens to beautiful colouring and stuffs like that but his mum persuaded me that this computer age. But I felt there a lot of things to imbibe into them that serve as the foundation just like they did with us. Not giving 2 years old that his brain is not fully developed a university undergraduate questions. I thought there is a regulatory body for the schools. Abeg make them regulate am well.
