Nigerians to start paying £3, 000 to enter the UK from November

Naija people, una dey hear this one? According to a report by UK Daily Mail, visitors from 'high risk' countries in Africa and Asia will have to put up a £3,000 cash bond to enter Britain.

The money will be kept by the Government if visitors do not return home by the time their visas expire.

A pilot scheme, introduced by Home Secretary Theresa May, will target hundreds of people coming to Britain on six-month visit visas from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The countries have been picked for their high number of visa applications and what the Government sees as relatively high levels of immigration abuse and fraud, reports the Sunday Times.

The bonds, to be introduced from November, will only apply to non-EU migrants, otherwise they would fall foul of European rights to free movement.

'This is the next step in making sure our immigration system is more selective, bringing down net migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands while still welcoming the brightest and the best to Britain,' Mrs May told the Sunday Times.

'In the long run we’re interested in a system of bonds that deters overstaying and recovers costs if a foreign national has used our public services.'

A second scheme will cover countries such as Kenya, the newspaper reports, which are considered to be lower-risk because immigration officials have fewer doubts about migrants' plans to return home.

About 2.2million people are granted visas to enter Britain every year. Last year 296,000 people from India were granted six-month visas, as were 101,000 from Nigeria, 53,000 from Pakistan and 14,000 apiece from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The Home Secretary plans to reduce annual net migration to under 100,000 by 2015.

Hahaha Interest free borrowing, yea? Madam Theresa May, I see you!

But really, shit just got real. Was Literally just told at the bank an hr ago, that since I'm from a 'high risk' country, opening an account was going to be more complicated...its not their fault tho, we are the ones rushing here.

Thank you my dear....Nigeria is on the verge of precipice and our youths are busy talking about trivial things like how much dbanj or don jazzy bought their cars or whatever... Let me repeat myself; according to Martin Luther king jnr, our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter. Nigerians think, think... Nigeria is on fire. Evil men and women as politicians have ruined our country and we all seem to be playing to the gallery. Where is the future for the present and future Nigeria and Nigerians. My heart continues to bleed!

God forbid! I dont even understand why people go there for vacays....unless you are visiting family sha .....if not, it's as boring as anything. I'd rather shop in Milan anyday......and between Europe, dubai, US and Asia my vacation needs are met. *Flicks hair and walks off*

Very good. Going to the UK is not compulsory. Now people can look into other options for holidaying or going to buy clothes to sell here. Uk is just the in thing now. It was once the US, then Dubai, and now, the UK. But why do people go there to hide? I wonder. Suffering and everything. Those who still want to go there to hide will sacrifice the €3000. It will affect the law abiding more cos they won't be ready to save that amount before they go on their 2-week boutique journey.

Some of you idiots act like you forget how The British Empire, became an empire. How many centuries of free slave labour build up their nation. Have they paid reparations to the descendants of the slaves and indentured labourers who gave them centuries of free labour for them to have the economy they do today?

I couldn't care less if illegals go into countries like these and suck them dry. Use them and build up your own country, just like they used your forebears to build up theirs.

linda i want to use this medium to alert nigerian about maltreatment by british govt,hw can they say u must deposit £3000 cash when u are only allowed to buy £2000 from bank, that i believe is money laundry which the IMF is against and is also against our monetary policy,we as commonwealth nation are maltreated and i see no use in commonwealth when our interest is not protected, and we still pay royalty to british govt as tax,i am trying to get all figures and fact together to publish it,so when a family is travelling they all have £3000 and if they are 5,that is £15000,that is big money laundry, are they helping us to solve corruption or otherwise.our govt shouldnt just shout and keep quiet but act.MAKE THIS A SUBJECT BECAUSE IT WILL HELP GIVE AWARENESS

Sorry to say this, but as young as you are, why sit around writing an essay for the government instead of taking matters into your own hands? Show the stupid Nigerian government that you don't need them! If the citizens could join hands and resolve the issues in nigeria by themselves, instead of waiting for the government or God to do something about it, then trust me, nigeria could be way better!! I know it is easier said than done, but people need to hear the truth!

@anon:12.04am,I can't believe a great mind like you still exists in this present day generation of Nigerian youth.I'd implore you not to lose focus and courage, though it could be hard to remain consistent and resolute in the face of overwhelming vices and corruption that are considered the norm in that country called Nigeria, but I can assure you, your dream country will definitely come with an anticlimax.Put in your best at every given opportunity to make a difference.Cheers.
Linda, that's a voice of reason from a 20 yr old,try ponder over it!

you can't blame the UK for such decision. You need to understand the level of abuse that the UK border system has suffered in recent times though. For visitors, I think the bond is a good way of curbing overstaying and refusal to leave. They should however limit it to visitors, students have suffered enough from UK policies in recent times.

This is a perfect example of one of those illiterates that think London is UK. i rest my case.

There is more to this but we can make our country better if every citizen live with the fear of God not excluding those in power! If only an awareness is created things will change for the better it starts from you and I pray for this country!!!
