On 20 January, 2008 Rebecca Emmanuel lured her son, Ishaya Emmanuel to a bush where she gave him a Maltina drink laced with poison which led to Ishaya’s death after which the convict burnt the corpse.
Rebecca, mother of four who was earlier granted bail by the court and had consistently appeared at the court during her trial, could not get the sympathy of the trial judge Justice Pirogai Ngada who, while delivering her judgement said: “I agree that she has four children and has never absconded from bail but Section 221 of the law under which she is convicted is a mandatory provision of culpable homicide punishable by death. I wish I can temper justice with mercy. But I can’t because she is hereby sentenced to death by hanging.”
In one of her confessional statements during the trial, Rebecca had said: “I went to my father’s house and picked my child. We got to a place where I got a poisonous substance at the sum of N20 and matches. I took him to a bush and laced the substance in a bottle of Maltina.
“I made him drink it. After 30 minutes, the boy died and I set him ablaze, so that no one could recognise him and I left for my husband’s house.”
Delivering the judgement, the judge said she was satisfied by the confessional statement made by the accused person.
P.M.NEWS learnt that Rebecca Emmanuel had Ishaya out of wedlock. He was aid to be the product of an illicit relationship between Rebecca and a military officer.
She must have killed the boy because of the trauma she passed in the hand of the unknown military man.
As the matter is, it is not clear whether the convict will appeal the judgement.

I wouldn't want to be in the judge's shoes to judge this case. I cannot be without emotion in matters such as this. All I can say if she can kill her own son, then she deserves her current outcome. Then again, if she's hanged, the loser is the rest of her kids and her aged dad / parent(s). Maybe, she shouldn't hang. She's just one hell of a a very foolish woman, really. She's just put everyone around into difficulty with her stupidity. To cover-up her own secret, she took a life - her own flesh and blood. She acted selfishly.

you are excusing the taking of a human life by saying she must have done it due to some trauma.why didn't she take the man's life instead of an innocent child?

Lord have mercy! If they kill her now, the rest of her children will be left motherless. This is really sad. Are we sure the lady does not have a mental problem? Though, this is not the first time I have read on this blog of women maltreating the sons they had outta wedluck because the fathers of said sons were extremely abusive towards them.

i just pity Nigeria...only the poor get into trouble for doing wrong...the rich can kill and get away with it right?? i am not saying killing is right but why have they not prosecuted any of those politicians and rich people who kill?? God bless Nigeria!

unfortunately that is the case with some charge and bail lawyers who possibly represented the accused, now convicted child killer? instead of exploring the insanity defense to mitigate the sentence, since no normal mother would heinously poison her son and set his body ablaze in this manner, they went the hog trying to pursue the case differently. Icheoku honestly thinks that even the judge erred by strictly pigeonholing herself to the provisions of the law since she is there to interpret the law and would have sent her to a lunatic asylum where she truly belongs to get help but not the gallows.
in all this, where is d stupid man she killed her child for???? women r still foolish i wonder when dey'll get the sense that men only mess with ur head and leave you.....
