Many say the sack was as a result of salary disagreement between the management and staff. Customer care agents were being paid N75, 000 a month, but the new owners slashed the salary by 60%. According to them, they pay their customer care workers in India $200, only managers earn as much as 75, 000 a month, so they didn't see why Nigerian customer care agents are earning as much as an Airtel manager in India.
If you call Airtel customer care now, it will be picked in Ghana and the only languages available to customers now are the English and Pidgin language.
Airtel is kinda denying they sacked 3, 000 workers...but they did. One called me on the phone this evening crying over being back in the labour market.

IF Airtel now owned by the indians, could sack up to 3,000.00 of thier nigerian staff for salary increment, then nigerian government should sack them from nigeria.
The customer service is being answered in ghana , let them move to ghana and later they will see the difference.Labour & productivity ministry and communication ministry should take note.

Indians have no regards for anyone, even they treat each other like dirt what do you expect them to do to nigerian. BTW they don't even like blacks especially nigerians, I think they need to kick them out of nigeria gosh can't stand them.
so what da F if dts wht they pay in india?do they rpoduce the same profit in india like they do in nigeria?nope!...so who said they were doing us a favour?foreign companies knw dt nigeria is a good market place especially for telecoms, but what they give back to nigeria depends on demands our leaders make for the nations benefit...but the scum bags are never bothered about the kind of services rendered, rather they keep fixing new pockets in their costumes to pile up more funds...this is the 21st century and a huge pity for nigerians to be treated in such a disgusting manner especially by foreigners....really,its a shame
nigeria enslaved by india?haba!
Linda, it's soo true. This Indians want to modernize slavery in our country. I do not blame them but our Government that have refused to set policies to check the so called expatriates. Guess you used your site actively in this issue so the voice of these promising youths be heard. I am sure the last is yet to be heard on this dehumanizing act...
The world's population tops 7 billion by 2050. Entrepreneurship is the way to go.
quite laughable, and the Nigerian government should not claim they were not expecting this. In all honesty Indian customer care employees are the cheapest in terms of salary package. That's why the US also outsource some of their customer care functions to Indian. If the Nigerians want to protest, all they have to do is boycott Airtel service, Kapish!!! Better move to Etisalat and not MTN, in order not to give MTN monopoly power.
Dis is so crazy,i hv sum friends who were affected.d activities of all dis gsm companies shuld b monitored infact d senate shuld legislate modus oparandi 4 dem cos they r makin so mch money in dis country.i even kw sumone who wasnt given a job in etisalat after passin d interview jx cos she limps.Dis is so crazy,i hv sum friends who were affected.d activities of all dis gsm companies shuld b monitored infact d senate shuld legislate modus oparandi 4 dem cos they r makin so mch money in dis country.i even kw sumone who wasnt given a job in etisalat after passin d interview jx cos she limps.
I never heard of airtel in nigeria. pls don't say i sound retarted.
Why are they allowed to set the standards? Simply because Nigerian Ministry of Labor is sleeping. Shikena!
You have GOT to be kidding me! In our own country fa! Who cares what they do in India? Anyway I don't blame them. It's only in a country like Nigeria that foreigners can come and walk all over us without the fear of repercussions *hiss*
A friend said to me sometime ago when i started my business that i should work becos its secure.irony!
Who wan sack Linda Ikeji..yep she probably worked like a donkey when she started and probably still does....but my message is start a business ...i donot think linda started this blog with capital other than a starcomms modem and a zeal to succeed. I donot no Linda but i hope using her as an e.g will open people's eyes.
Only you can pay you what you deserve and if you are one of those that say they are not good business people or will all of us start bizness ni then pls accept the salary reduction and shut the F up.

From ECONET to VODACOM to CELTEL to ZAIN and now to AIRTEL. I'm sure i missed out one of their numerous names.
Linda please get ur facts straight before posting. They didnt sack this people , they just failed to renew their contract with these agents they are not airtel staff, they were recruited by Hr index and another recruitment firm for airtel and its a 1year contract tingi.
Yes CLF, you missed out v mobile... I however do not see anything wrong with what they're doing. The goal of a business is to maximize profits so if it means paying their workers peanuts and getting the job done, so be it.
It however behooves on us collectively as a society to not let companies get away with such. They must be made to pay living wages and workers must be properly employed and not given contract jobs. How much is 30k? I'm sure Linda blows this in a day. I for try my luck with am but I know say my pocket no fit carry the load... Lol. Anyway, enough rambling by Nigerians; what we need to do is to vote with our feet and send a message home to Airtel and any other such company that is thinking of attempting this . Their services should be boycotted indefinitely. Linda and members of the blogoshere should lead this...
Let us all boycott airtel and switch to better networks like etisalat and glo, that way airtel will sit up. Mtn messed me up severally, I had to switch to etisalat, now am enjoying cos am given free credit of up to 6k by etisalat by mnth end, depending on how I load credit. Mtn sends me msgs now and then to come, I only use their stupid line to receive calls as it was my biz line!
get them out. rubbish people should leave. hissssss
What is the Nigerian Labour Congress doing about this Airtel matter?
Used MTN for 8 years till I discovered Etisalat this year. Etisalat rocks jare. I get free credit at the end of each month for both inter network and network calls. I get an unbelievable amount of free sms AND their tariffs are wayyyy cheaper.
if they sack you, go home. they are the investors, period!
My Cousin worked for them and was one the 3000 staf fired. Even before they got fired he was telling me how the new Indian owners treat the staff.
Apparently the were all chased of of the building by the Mobile police after the sacking.
The point is that our leaders are incompetent and useless. These foreign compnaies from China and India are turning Africa to a mordern day slave continent and our govts are quiet about it. Where are Boko Haram people when really need them.
I agree with you jarre, let every airtel user buy another line and drop airtel for now. Indians are using their voodoo on us o! I walk with them presently, i no dey give them chance at all.
What an Independence gift for my compatriots! At a time when we are celebrating 51 years of freedom from slavery of the British colonal masters, the Indians are enslaving us, even in our own land.I weep for my country.I've stopped using the line after they they told me one day that the line is invalid even after I had registered it.Nosense!
Nigeria should be able to fight this. There is a difference between the prices of labour in different countries. It is referred as the difference in purchasing power parity. What $200 can buy in India is alot more than what $200 can buy in Nigeria. You cant just use an exchange rate to determine the price of labour in another country. Or dont they have economists in their company? If accurately compared, with all the right details #70000 is too small in Nigeria compared to the $200 in India
