Omoni Oboli calls out writer who criticised her movies

Actress and mother of three, Omoni Oboli, who recently got an AMVCA nomination for best actress in a comedy for her role in the movie Wives on Strike, has angrily responded to a writer who said her movies were below par.

Omoni, who endeavours to steer clear of controversy, gave in today as she called out the writer, all the while praising herself for being good at her job as a writer, producer and director. Read her response after the cut...

Winifred should be given award for this truthful criticism. The day I went to cinema to watch Wives on Strike was my lunch break. I told one of my colleague "abeg I wan go watch oboli's wives on strike. This one that media will not let us rest. And I need to do a review on it and send to a friend "Believe me dear omoni that movie is just any other movie on the block. It wouldn't have sold much if not for media hype. And winifred's criticism is factual. The movie's storyline is quiet predictable . To me the movie is more like u getting news papers' report on child marriage and just scripting revolving your story and writing it plain. No mystery, no twist, thank God for chioma akpotha's and your own flawless acting and also the clean cinematography. Then the scenes I truly enjoyed is that of chioma when she challenged her husband at home telling him if their daughter were to be alive would he have allowed her to married off? And also that hausa family. That little girl did well and the mother and father. I love the part where the father was happy that his wife has started sewing and making money to support him. That part is beautiful. I think what winifred isSaying is that if you want to hype any movie pls let it be a master piece An evergreen. A piece academic professor (both literature, language) can write a whole book on. Dear omoni biko even though it's two movies in a year, provided it's a masterpiece, we Nigerians wouldn't mind paying 240 million to watch. Give us not just what will wow us, let it be didactic yet mesmerise us so much we will keep going for a re-watch over and over. I love stephenine okereke, kunle. Afolayan and uncle tunde kelani for this..Oh let me give u a story one of my lectures told me. He said "as a student in obafemi awolowo university under professor wole soyinka. Baba wrote a poetry on the board and ask each student to individually make a criticism of the piece. The poem was a good poem all students analyse and praise the writer. I ask myself before it got to my turn. Does that mean this poem has no fault? I look more intently. And I began to see what others are not seeing. When u r finally got to my turn, I was this bit close to questioning the poet if he was physical as to what he was thinking. After the whole class took turn in appreciating the poem, professor wole soyinka said they all did averagely well And said however the person who did a thorough job was that my lecturer who picks out the poet's mistake( which might reflect in the style used, language use even content contradicting title)According to him professor wole soyinka praised him very well for his eagle eye and told the whole class that the poem was actually his.Negative criticism actually does not destroy your work. It turns it into a masterpiece. And nothing hurt more than when your editor edits your work and cuts back on many things you think are right. My word for you omoni as an artist, go the wole soyinka's way. Take winifred on a lunch date 😂 if na garri and groundnut under a relaxed atmosphere. Let him talk. And if there are more than one winifreds, gather them together u can give them like " association of wicked critic who cannot write a one act script but criticises endlessly "Give them a prototype of your manuscript let them do their yeye negative reviews then collect your thing back, sieve through all they have said. And as the conceiver of the idea or story decide what to do. Just let them know their say is one say but not the final say. Appreciate them. Belive me darling you have a lot to gain from negative criticism than too much positive.Until Oprah winfery call u for interview, CNN do a documentary on yr works and BBC profile u and extract a clip from ur work pls keep welcoming Wilfreds...

Pardon my typos and bad grammar. U sha kuku get the gist. Pls omoni winifred's bae. Don't forget to take him on cold water (he needs zome chillezzz) ,garri, groundnuts, sugar lunch date.

My friend, you can't be infallible. That is the man (or woman's) opinion and you can't go off on him just because his opinion is the opposite of yours.

She needs to have a seat. If she's so amazing. Her work will speak for itself, n she wouldn't have to toot her own horn. You Mrs oboli are full of it. Come back down to earth where the rest of us are and stop letting your head swell over winning a mere two awards. Right now, we don't even know who you are. You haven't earned the right to be this cocky. First get to Hollywood. Hell, get to omotolas level and the level of all the Hollywood veterans and then try this arrogant talk again

@ Agoge Atelier, I applaud the general 'gist' of your first comment. But OMG, your grammar stinks! Part of your write-up gives the impression that you are a university graduate! Your follow-up comment in which you wrote '... Pardon my typos and bad grammar ...' gives one very serious cause for concern: The indication is that you recognize that you have English language deficiency. Yet, a university found you worthy in learning, and awarded you a degree! I am tempted to ask what university inflicted such damage on you, and in what language you wrote your exams.

However, I, worryingly, choose not to - realising that (a) in Nigerian universities, anything goes; students stay away from classes and spend time, in and outside Nigeria, in whatever else they fancy. They return to their universities at the end of the semester, pay money or offer non-monetary favours for 'excellent' exam grades, and (b) many Nigerians including the Nigerian nation (through its toxic government policies), shamelessly validate such shenanigans.

You can understand why Omoni Oboli would produce a sub-standard movie and go on to receive an AMVCA award which she does not 'truly' merit. I support you and everyone who has taken time to reprimand Omoni for her mis-guided self-praise and unwarranted attack on Winifred for telling her the truth about her work. Meanwhile, you all should stop blaming Omoni. Each of you should look in the mirror. The person you see is part of the system that is responsible for the rot, and should be the person to blame.

The writer is 100% right ,some of this moving photograph, not motion pictures, this people refer to as MOVIES are mostly elementary joke of production ,but i don't blame them that's all Africans can settle for .A one eye-man in a blind world can always feel like a king. The same thing apply to there so called un-creative and un-talented make-believe musicians. An Actress in Nigeria is a Glorify prostitute and An Actor is just a Glorify GIGOLO.

But she said the truth. Omoni's movies are over hyped. She just has connection and mingled with the right set of pple to give her the platform she has now. Take for example, the movie "wives on strike" was not originally written by her or any Nigerian. I've watched a similar black American movie called "chi-raq" with a similar story line and it made sense cos they were trying to tell a real life story of what happened in America sometime ago. Next time she should just keep quiet and stop forming genius...

Omoni, you have the time to respond to someone who doesn't like your work.

And I have been writing of good things concerning Nigerian celebrities, and none of you have ever thanked me or acknowledged me.

You spend time responding to your negative critic, that does not want you in the movies.

Don't spoil your career.

Never do it again. Leave it for your fans to go after your negative critics.
