Woman sacked by Nasarawa Civil Service for expressing her mind on FB

A Nigerian woman named Ruqayyat Tijjani Usman, (pictured) who worked with the Nasarawa State Government civil service took to twitter to say she was sacked over comments she made on Facebook

Ruqayyat was unfairly sacked because she expressed her freedom of speech by asking the Nasarawa State government some pertinent questions on social media. She was sacked a few days after she made these comments...

If the way govt react to publication on social media is that same the react to poverty in the country by now life would have been better. Nonsense imagine how fast the reacted because of constructive comment ..

I am a federal civil servants and we were lectured on the ethics of the service when we were inducted. One of them being loyalty. Why come out and say things which are disparaging and detrimental to your employer? Did she share these ideas with her bosses b4 going on social media? She was wrong

For crying out loud this is the 21st century and not the stone age, with that said so how can a responsible government act as if we're in a military era. What is wrong in using a social media to express ones opinion. I think that state govt needs serious orientation and enlightenment.

If, indeed, this is true, it is most unfortunate. Question that immediately comes to mind is: has her dismissal followed due process? If no, then she should take the State's Civil Service to court to challenge what's I see as wrongful, arbitrary termination of her appointment. I think the sack should be reversed unless the Nassarawa State Government desires to embarrass herself.
Any of our SANs willing to take this case on pro bono or are they too busy hiding & shielding accused persons from law~enforcement agents in their SUVs?

Unknown said...

This is outright, she should better be reinstated, else... #FreedomavSpeech

It's not fair..whatever happened to freedom of speech. Instead of government to take corrections they relieved her of her job..Nigeria which way forward

If she criticised the govt.she works for,she then had breached civil service rules. Before you all begin to abuse & shout yourselves hoarse,it is against the civil service rules to publicly criticise your employers. There is no sentiments here.

Hausa and the sense.

Let your union fight for you, in USA and Canada, UK ! Your union will fight for you except the company is private.

I don't know if the govt is right but I advise people to mind what they put out on social media, Esp when u are not self employed/financed or a civil rights group.

Linda please take this lady's case seriously, ur shouldn't just end in posting it this one time.
If she's successfully victimized, it will only make other people shy away from speaking out in similar circumstance, and that is bad for the society

Unknown said...

What? Just like that? Justice is dead in this country!!! But no! Let's probe them till they think again! #undorequayyatsack

Unknown said...

So sad but she just said the truth..LINDA OBSERVE CAREFULLY

BUT MAKA WHY said...

She is a Muslim woman and will be regarded as defiant if and when she decides to sue the Nasarawa State Government.
She has a case of someone decides to represent her in court.
That's the change you all voted for.

There is nothing as unfairly sacked. Have you checked the civil servant rules? Even in developed countries, you dare not speak against the government. The moment you have signed up to work in a government organisation, you gave up your freedom of speak and can only speak through the Labour group.outsiders can speak against government, but not insiders. Watch your back!

LIB if one of your staff posted a scathng critique of you on social media, wouldn't you fire them? I understand that she has a point but I don't agree with her approach and the way she handled the issue.

So this kind of thing can happen in Nigeria in this new age? Instead of the government to buckle up on their duties, they prefer an easy way out of cutting the truth by terminating her job. Government should give her job back to her, we are not in army regime

Sad but, according to d civil service rules, once u work for the government, u r not allowed to say anything against them or tk up any political propaganda, if u want to, u hv to resign first, she should have gotten a friend who doesn't work for the govt to do the writing for her, u can't criticise your boss and expect to be retained.

This is a callous act. The people of Nassarawa and Nigerians should rise in her defense, that permanent secretary should be sacked immediately and anyone remotely connected to this. Nigeria has to change!

Can you imagine? What did she do except ask valid questions? She needs to get herself a good lawyer. Rubbish!!!

Unknown said...

One of the cardinal principles of the Civil service is that the civil servants are anonymous. They are supposed to be seen and not heard. She can't go to the media even if it's social media to comment on Government policies or programs without due authorization. Doing so will be tantamount to breaking the rules of engagement. Most of our graduates these days don't care to read the terms and conditions of their employment. She actually violated the rules of engagement.
