Zoe Saldana under fire for painting her face black in new movie

Latina actress, Zoe Saldana has come under fire for painting her face black in a trailer for the new Nina Simone biopic. Fans and even Nina Simone's family have condemned her.
Saldana, who plays the legendary performer and civil rights activist, Nins Simone, had her skin look darker and her nose made to look wider in a poster and video promoting the movie.
The actress tweeted a quote from Simone on Wednesday, only for the family of the late Feeling Good singer to demand she 'take Nina's name out your mouth for the rest of your life'.

Supporters of Simone's music and work criticized movie bosses for casting Saldana - who is an American of part Puerto Rican and Dominican descent - back in 2012.

After years of delays the movie is finally set to be released in April - and its trailer has caused outrage among the black community. Read some of the tweets below...

Trouble, everywhere you go. More Instagram followers for you

Its wrong tho. So many good black actresses cud have been cast for that role - like Taraji P. Henson.

Why cast a light skinned woman to potray the very thing she was against - racism. And some people feel Jada was outta line over the Oscars? Racism is still very very real in Hollywood

I would say blame the casting director but then again Zoe shud have known better and declined the role

Well, they have a point.but I see it as the white embracing the black race.

Unknown said...

They should have gotten a darker skin person. None of my business

Unknown said...

Couldn't they just get someone with dark skin, a wide nose and thick lips just like the real Nina? Rather than get someone totally different and start blackening face and widening nose with make up. If this were nollywood I'd have asked who Zoe shagged to get the role.

What's wrong with some people??? If an actress had cut her hair for a role, would she been mawed on like this?? They forget to understand that the important part of choosing someone for a role is their ability to give the best performance that can be given, no one can be someone else, if there are other things that can be adjusted to make the performance close to 100%, then it shouldn't cause these kind of issues...

Zoe calls herself a black latina but only for acting opportunities. Otherwise, she sticks with non blacks. It's got to be said. Hollywood doesn't like black people very much. That's why they have a white man playing Michael Jackson. The slights will continue unless blacks get their own and stop looking to that industry for validation.

Rather inappropriate rantings. Whats wrong with dat Afterall ta just a movie!

Unknown said...

HEy! Hold it! You guys shouldn't take it out on Zoe. It wasn't her fault that she was casted for it. After all she needed the money naa.

Unknown said...

Not her fault, but that of the make-up artist and the producer

She didn't make herself up

It's not JUST a movie. This is an important part of modern African American history. Please educate yourself about who Nino Simons was. All her life, she battled discrimination of dark skinned blacks only to have a movie about her her story suffer such indignity. #Shameful
