Soldiers confiscate today's edition of The Nation and Leadership newspapers

Going by tweets on the timeline of the Nation newspapers and a report on their site, military men this morning stormed the office of the Nation newspapers in Benin City and Warri and confiscated their publication for today. The soldiers from the 3 Battalion of the Nigerian Army at Okwuokoko, Delta State seized a van conveying the day’s newspapers to Warri and Benin City.

According to the newspaper, a source close to the soldiers said they are acting on orders from above.  Continue...

In a related development, military officials this morning also confiscated today’s edition of Leadership Newspaper heading to the Northwest, Southeast and South-South regions of the country.  A road block mounted by soldiers at the tollgate along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway intercepted the van conveying the Leadership newspapers and confiscated it.

No one knows yet the reason behind their actions but some people believe it is because of Tuesday, June 3rd publication on Leadership newspaper where it was reported that nearly a dozen army generals and soldiers on lower ranks had been brought to trial for sabotaging the Nigerian government’s onslaught against Boko Haram. This, the military vehemently denied immediately and even issued a press statement to that effect.

Nigerian forces are at crossroads. Go to seem border, it costs N300 to stamp out & register one's passport, and N500 at Benin Rep side, so going out and in ll cost N1,600 per head $10. On a land border? Yet government does nothing about it, corruption stings in Nigerian immigration service.

Unknown said...

O ga o but are they actually allowed to do that because Nigeria isn't under military rule so who are they to prevent newspapers from being sold . Their is obviously something they don't want us to read which will expose them, Jonathan needs to speak up o and tell us who is oppressing him . I think the military are going beyond their juristruction but some people will still come out and say they want the military to rule us . They should just publish it online so we can see it

I guess nigerian coward soldiers are not afraid to to do that bcus they heard boko haram is not driving the van. Useless soldiers. Go to Cameroon, your neighbours and see how the stump boko haram down and put them 6 feet below where the belong. And you call your selves soldiers in nigeria. Boko haram stump you and disgrace any time they want. Now you want to make noise.

Anonymous said...

Order from which above? Hope nobody will call GEJ..that is strictly military business. Army issued a statement that no general is being coirt marshaled why write falsehood?

Anonymous said...

Hmmmm that's what the supposed 'brown envelope' media of Nigeria get! When you collect money from these Godless Nigerian leaders is like making a pact with the devil! You don't get to change the rules when it suits you. You can't have your cake and eat it too! The leaders have no respect for Nigeria media nor the masses! Nigerian's are cowards!

Am not supporting the move, but there should also be sensible journalism on the part of our journalists. Captions like "Bloodshed in Nigeria".... War in Nigeria etc aren't nice.

cubixthoughts said...

By definition GEJ is president and commander in chief of the armed forces AKA army. If this has been done without his approval then he is not a president, just a figure head

Unknown said...

If they publish news that affects military operations cos people who want to sabotage the operations leaked it to dem den the military can confiscate dia papers n trucks. I think publishin d news about d generals and soldiers under investigation wld hv jeopardized a sting operation. But well nigerians dont think they just talk.
