...and Dencia makes it to UK Daily Mail

Hasn't Whitenicous given Dencia way more recognition than her music ever did? Mainstream media have now taken an interest in her. MediaTakeOut, Ebony magazine, The Chutch and now UK's Daily Mail. If I were Dencia, I won't feel any type of way about the headline...they are helping her sell her market for free. lol. Find the full text of Daily Mail's article on Dencia after the cut...

Culled from UK Daily Mail

A Nigerian and Cameroonian pop star who launched a skin cream called Whitenicious has defended her product after critics branded it an 'abomination' for promoting skin-bleaching.
In an interview with Ebony, Dencia claims that the skincare cream is intended to remove dark spots, and that it is out of her control if customers use it to whiten their entire skin.
Defending her own drastically altered appearance since she started using Whitenicious, the singer asserts: 'I was never that dark in real life... And guess what? I don't even care because [critics] are bringing me business.'

According to the product website, Whitenicious - which bears the slogan, 'Say goodbye to pigmentation and spots forever' - effectively lightens skin in just seven days.
Skin bleaching is a growing trend in Dencia's native West Africa, and critics are angered that it appears she is promoting it with her product.
Specifically, the pop star has been criticized for using her own changing skin tone as a marketing technique. Pictures of Dencia taken in 2011 show her with much darker pigmentation compared to the Whitenicious campaign where she appears several shades lighter.
'When you take that picture and you put a picture of Dencia darker, this is what you're telling people - the product really works. And guess what? People really want to buy it. It's what it is. I don't really care,' the singer admitted.
Still, she refutes the idea that she is glorifying lighter skin, claiming it is for removing dark spots only and that she came up with the name because it's symbolic for 'fresh beginnings' and 'purification'.
She then elaborates by saying: 'Look at all the Africans that are successful in the world. They are as Black as Alek Wek. And if I was as Black as Alek Wek, I would never ever use anything on my skin.'

Ultimately, Dencia admits than Whitenicious can indeed be used to bleach skin, but that most women wouldn't use it this way because of its luxury price point.
'I don't see anybody spending all that money to bleach their entire skin,' she says of her product, which costs $60 for a small pot and $160 for a large one. 'I don’t see that happening.'
Without skipping a beat, though, she proceeds to contradict herself by asserting that if a customer were to bleach her entire skin, it would be beyond her control.

Finally, when Dencia is warned that skin-lightening cream has been proven to cause cancer, she counters: 'But guess what? The air you breathe outside causes you cancer.  Everything in the world causes cancer.'

When Dencia launched Whitenicious in January and saw it sell out within 24 hours, critics took to Twitter to voice their outrage that she would promote a phenomenon that has come to symbolize self-hatred among dark-skinned women.
One person posted a tweet directed at her, writing: 'This #whitenicious cream of yours is an abomination and creating more insecurities among women all over the world.'

And another said: 'When Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "I have a dream…" The dream was not to become white.'

Bad publicity kills sales. There are only negatives linked to this product: cancer, low self-esteem, stereotypes about West African's obssession with light skin. She is the world's most disliked black woman. Everything about her is an embarrassment to the race.

When man dey tell me say make I tone say I too black! Say I fit no see man to marry! I was even told I have 2 disadvantages. Am dark and am a size 16. If I was fair and size 16, men would follow me up and down that's what a man told me!! I have major low self esteem I am so negative that I don't see anything good in myself anymore! Just yesterday I was feeling suicidal again! The more depressed I get the more I eat. I just take the anger out on food and then get even more deppressed. Maybe if I get lighter thngs would change, even when I fell ill and I went down to a size12, people started saying I had a major sickness. Till I blew up again to a size 16. Not like am so dark o! Am linda ikeji dark! People just kill with the kind of thingsthey say. Especially on blogs. I just taya! Crying!

You won't feel any type of way because your market/business is selling? What a slave-thought.
Well good luck to you & that thought while the ever ready-to-take-advantage-of white folks get more convinced that people like this(Dencia) are just slaves & must look like their "glorified master." Well, everybody has their own opinions & choices in life & I can respect that. However, the reason this has become a part of my business is because this is no longer home-grown. it has gone viral in white countries & the message behind this Dencia's "whitenicious" is now bigger than only her & affects all of us (black folks) because it generally passes a false message to the white folks that we hate ourselves & want to be like them.
Sometimes, I just wish I could expel African people who don't see any good in themselves off this continent so that we(the rest) can just sit & build this continent up in every way including mentality.
God Bless Nigeria,God Bless mama Africa.

White people men and women both tan to look darker. The same Daily Mail talked about the dangers of tanning for white people, tanning causes cancer worse that bleaching those hope you guys know. The whites also swallow pills and take injections to seem darker (tanned) and I don't think they do this to because they want to change their race, it's stupidity to think people bleach or fix weaves because they are not proud of their race, that's all hogwash abeg. How many people have u seen die from bleaching sef? Do you knw anyone personally that has died from it? If yes please let's hear about it biko. Relaxer gives cancer and a lot of you woman condemning Dencia are relaxing your hair so it can be straight as white women. If you're so proud to be black pls stop relaxing your hair, stop fixing weaves, stop wearing oyibo clothes and stick to traditional African clothing. To avoid cancer stop eating genetically engineered and modified foods and canned food because they cause cancer, if you don't want to bleach simply stay away from skin lightening products.

Anonymous said...

Linda abeg stop talking abt dis dencia its infuriating

Anonymous said...

I am not sure why this is important. White people bleach to stop aging wrinkles. Does bleaching make an individual become a criminal? I do not think anyone have the right to judge any individuals who deside to change their own skin tone. It is nobodys business. Let's talk about fashion or politics and debate on that. Sometimes that will educate our mind.

Anonymous said...

This Denica character is a DISGRACE to all Africans and black people in general.... How can you market a bleaching cream to change your beautiful God given colour to that of another race. This low self esteem and self hatred is abominable. Ughh

Anonymous said...

Just look at urself. Letting ppl define and depress u. If u r concerned about ur weight, y not start a program? Start eating in small sizes 4-6 times a day, last meal before 8 pm. Use a small bowl. Eat fruits as a meal. Take long walks as part of exercising... till u sweat. Increase d distance with time. Before u know it, u'll b fine. U dey talk suicide..mscheww

Anonymous said...

If u tire for ur weave, u remove am. If u tire for ur fake nails or eye lashes, u remove am. If u tire for ur bleached up wetin u go do? All the things u mentioned are temporary beauty regimens for ppl looking to switch up their styles. If person wan lowcut today and bangs tomoro wetin e go do? Use extensions or weaves to achieve the look! So that was a fatuous comparison from u. Bleaching is an attempt to change one's identity permanently. The stigma way dey follow blacks around plenty and some blacks wan add white worshipping and black hate to the list. No matter how much dey bleach, they will never change their dna, race or ethnicity and it will never make whites see them as one of them. The worst thing to happen to black people na black people themselves!

Sweetheart, you're beautiful as you are.I'm a size 8 but I'm almost as dark as Alek Wek.My immediate elder sister is very fair but you know what,I'm black and proud.I've always been beautiful cos that's how the people around me made me feel. When you feel good about yourself,it shows on the outside.Black is beautiful my dear.I'm so proud and can't get the guys to stop loving me.Let your true beauty flow from the inside.God made you unique as there can't be another you.As for husband to marry, you'll definately see a man that will love you just as you are angel.Be proud of yourself ok.
