It hasn't killed anyone yet, @ least not on my findings, again it is about the safest means of getting high. I have friends who mix it in ice cream. Naturally excess of everything is bad and dangerous. Then medically excess of any drug is bad and harmful to the health. So for me, tho no known after effect has been discovered, but there is bound to be one soon. About d discovery, it was made known by doctors. Not directly tho.

This has been in rampant usage for over 6/7 years now, which is why a couple of years ago the UK and am sure other EU countries put a stop to the selling of cough medicines with codeine without a prescription from the Dr's. It was until I came to Nigeria that I realised that codeine contained medicines are sold freely over the counter!

Thank God you brought this up! Codeine is structurally related to heroin, they are both morphine derivatives. While codeine has pain relieving and cough suppressing properties, the action of methyloxidase on the 3-methyl group on codeine allows for it's conversion to morphine and other members. Unfortunately certain enzyme populations are expressed more across different races. In Black people, the methyloxidase is more and as such conversion from plain "Cough" syrup to a drug of addiction happens. Effects of morphine like derivatives include- euphoria( getting high)., constipation and respiratory depression

I remember a few years ago when I was serving in Gombe State. You could only get cough medicine on the black market and it would cost you an arm and a leg to buy it because it was highly sought after by addicted young people seeking for a high.

Yes it is possible to get high from the use of codeine. The drug belongs to the opiate family which also includes morphine. It can be used as a cough suppressant and also for pain relief. It is usually known as sizzurp on the streets, which I believe is a mixture of codeine and promethazine- sold in the USA as a cold remedy. I believe Pimp C of UK died as a result of overdosing on sizzurp- due to respiratory depression, a side effect of codeine.
