As schools all over Niogeria are about to resume for a new session, Nollywood actor Prince Eke ponders on the expensive fee of schools owned by churches. According to him:
"How can a church own a school and the poor can't attend it...? How can you be teaching people how they can make it to the kingdom of God when they can't enter your own earthly 'kingdom', built with people's tithes and donations...? How can Christian schools be the most expensive schools in Nigeria now...? How can one relate this to the term "Christianity" with regards to the "Early Christian Community" ?

I carried heavy blocks when they were building CU. I was serving in Ota Africa then. And so did a lot of the members then go to the sites to put in hours of labour. Not to mention their financial contributions. But, 98% of them can afford to send their kids there.

Honestly, u have my point of view i have been saying this, that what the church is doing concerning kids education is really,really not right and i totally agree with u.The poor in every church contribute to the development of the church, how come' their kids can not attend the school in the church,so when it come to that aspect their poor people but when they contribute to the welfare of the church they are not.Is really not right

Here is my thought process on this. The churches probably have a lot of free everything(schools, hospitals, daycare, food pantries,orphanage etc) but these expensive schools are their income houses and this allows them to foot the bill of the other free services. I had the same belief until I got to know the facts; it is sad that people who don't give in church are the ones that complain too much. It takes a lot of money to maintain and also to pay qualified teachers in these schools and churches do struggle to pay bills. To maintain standard in few schools I know as a parent, you must pay. Most of these schools though built by church but are being independently run. Churches also have scholarship and tuition reduction scheme for members. You won't know what it takes until you are there. Instead of complaining, anyone can set up schools and offer it free of charge. Most big churches in Lagos can't even be on TV because of cost....my kids are attending a school belonging to my church and I know the school is heavily subsidized given the quality...Just go to St Gregory obalende..a secondary sch belonging to Catholic and ask how much they pay in a year. I am a the writer's necklace and eating are luxury that should been used to pay a child's fee if I am to serve him right.

I agree schools built by churches shouldn't be overly expensive. One thing we all should know though is that the running of schools costs more than just the tithe it took to build it. The teachers don't do charity and they've got other bills to pay plus most christian schools try as much as possible to give the best quality and that comes at a cost.

Well... Churches can open schools mainly for charitable course or they may choose to open one for profit. It is their choice. The question should be why can't public schools be well equipped even though billions of naira is budgeted each year for that sector?

My dear Nollywood actor Prince Eke, I used to share your views on schools on by churches and the need to make it affordable to the poor by comparing to those good old days when it was run by missionaries. Missionaries who built many of those schools in those good old days were not money conscious, they were motivated by love and care to bring the good news to us. They made tremendious sacrifices and they ran these schools with support and donations from their country of origins. The schools were forcifully taken away, funding was withdrawn and now some of these schools were returned when govt saw that it could not manage or sustain the level of quality they were initially established for.
Now the schools are run by indegenous missions who have no support from outside they will need to maintain and update the standard of education and yet make it affordable, they will need money to employ teachers (teachers no longer want their reward in heaven. A teacher wants to be paid well, live in a good house and drive a comfortable car); facilities have to be up to date and they don't come cheap; the school has to make a little profit to be self-sustaining at least, all these cost money, so it has to be expensive.
The only thing that we as a people who inherited these schools are not doing is both govt and individual to subsidies education, the churches should be forced to subsidized education since they are not be taxed. A lot of money are being made by churches today. What is the churches social responsibility if it is not subsidizing education at least. Whether they have a school or not they should pay money to fund education.
The world we live now is so upside down. Teachers who taught many of the engineers, doctors, lawyers and politicians are the least paid people which is cruel. That is why many people don't want to teach and those you find there are either doing it because it is their calling or they can't find anything better to do. We all are to blame for the high cost of education even in churches. Every member of a church with a school should put forward to the leaders of the church to find ways to subsidies education starting with their own members.

A friend of mine had his son sent home from a church's primary school in Ibadan just because of fees balance of N3,500. He pleaded with the school authorities to give him two days to complete the payment but they told him it was 'order from above' to send the kid home. He swore from that day never to attend church again. Awolowo was never a church leader or a pastor, yet, he gave our parents free education. His name would never be forgotten.

The high fee is just a hype.......School is a place one is taught how to read and write, just send your kids to a good school that you can afford......its all about speaking English and mathematics, period

Gban. This man has said it all. The church is recognised as charity organisation by the government so anything they do is regarded as charity. Why then are they charging people to do charity. Using school to siphon money. Truth is as long as the church is in operation the school will always run and God will sustain the school as it is pleasing God's heart. I don't know how schools and churches are in Nigeria, but I can speak from experience in USA. I went to a Christian church-based school for all 4 years of high school. It was a smaller country church that was in a not very prosperous town. Many of the families who sent their kids weren't wealthy and helped pay their tuition by working part-time at the school; some as sports coaches, others janitorial, others in the kitchen, but all out of love. Most of the teachers made much less than the public school teachers made; but then they looked at their job as a calling and ministry. Those who were tithing church members got a discount on the tuition, even if they attended a different church, because they were already giving to God. There were also some scholarships available, though I don't know which of my schoolmates received them. It didn't matter.
Those who really wanted to attend the small Baptist school in Fruitport, MI were able to (if there was space available) regardless of financial status. And please don't forget that there are a lot of costs involved in having a church school: teacher salaries, the costs of the building and utilities, insurance, books and supplies, etc. American tax dollars pay for public schools and charter schools; church schools don't have that funding. What we did have was a lot of God's love shown to us every single day by people who cared about us. I graduated 30 years ago and moved away, as many others did, but most of us are still in touch through social media. We share joys and laughs. We pray for each other. We cry with each other. This is being a Christian.
Even though my family was blessed financially, my parents chose to sacrifice on some things because they valued a Christian education more. If it's in your heart to have your kids get a Christian education ask God and pray fervently for guidance. He will open the doors and opportunities. This is my experience and I'm thankful.
