FAAN bans luggage screening at MMIA departure hall

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has announced the ban of luggage screening by Customs officials and other Airport officials at the departure hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

In a statement released by FAAN's acting general manager, Henrietta Yakubu, the Managing Director of FAAN, Saleh Dunoma, said this was in line with the Executive Order recently issued by the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo when he paid an unscheduled visit to the airport in April. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced its pledge to an uncompromised implementation of Executive Order as directed by the Acting President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. The Managing Director and Chief Executive, Engr. Saleh Dunoma made this known after a meeting with all the participating agencies at the committee level set up to fast track the implementation of the Order at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos today.

“As indicated by the Executive Order, there will be no compromise with the procedures. This means whatever security procedure or security checks we adopt, will not be compromised. I told them that we have to meet the deadline set by the Executive Order. They have mapped out their strategy in line with the Order, but they need to meet regularly to ensure that this strategy is adhere to and improved”.

Concentration is on Lagos Airport because it is the key airport, due to its size, complexity and passenger traffic. If we get it right in Lagos, we will get it right in other airports. Once we do that, I believe all the other airports will be easy for us. The participating agencies are: Nigeria Police Force, Directorate of State Security, Quarantine Services, Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nigerian Immigration Services, Nigeria Customs Services, FAAN Aviation Security amongst others. I am confident that other participating agencies will support FAAN efforts to achieve success in the deadline and implementation.

All participating agencies are ready to key into this big committee set up for the implementation. Everybody is contributing positively. From all indications, all hands are on deck to make sure the Executive Order is implemented successfully. FAAN does not envisage any problem at all, and it is fully committed to give all participating agencies its full support to close any obstacle that may arise.

The Executive Order does not give room for pre-checks on luggage. All checks should be done in designated areas. Luggage should not to be checked at the departure hall. On the sustainability of the Executive Order: “Once it is implemented, it must be sustained that is why everybody must own it. The agencies are sitting together now to make sure that they own the Executive Order. Once you own it then, it will be sustained”.

Thank God, its quite annoying because its not for our safety but their greed and an avenue to beg for money!

Next executive order is the one stopping them from barricading the airport doors, no where in the world do you need to beg to enter the airport.

lol I was thinking of this just yesterday as to how I can avoid giving the idiots money without sounding bad. They open my bag and immediately say "ah Chairman anything for the boys", and even sometimes "anything for the girls" 🙄. I always feel bad that they're staying in this country whilst I'm traveling to a better place so I give them some thousands. Thank God they're scam is finally over..but still there's other scam checkpoints in that airport.

Thank goodness my yam, crayfish and raw nigerian food stuff will no longer be inspected for a means of bribery to take my local food with me. Those things are very pricey outside.

Our Honorable V.P.,
This needs to be extended to the arrival section too.
You never feel like coming to Nigeria once you remember that different departmental extortionists would be waiting for you at the arrival section of the airport.

Finally, a breath of fresh air at that airport, it is even that female officer that always check luggage that upset me most, she wil ask u for money like it is her right. My encounter with those immigration officers na even part two, stil remember them nick naming me sharp mouth girl. They asked me to give dem 5000 naira all bcos of BTE.. I told dem I don't have it bcos I knew if I brought it out dey wil stil ask me for money.. stupid ppl, brought it out at d end of d day and dey were stil telling me to give dem money, I refused and they started bringing up excuses like I was too small and under age all Becos of my small stature. when my passport was right in front of them reading 25yrs...den dey referred me to their boss and I recorded everything they said and sent it to my friends. Told dem I will sue them for every penny if I miss my plane. Immediately dey started threating me too, their boss quickly told dem to let me go before I cause wahala. They all said my mouth was too sharp. Lagos airport need a total rebranding, it not just the luggage section

I even doubt if MMIA should be referred to as an airport, much more an international one. When you pass through airports like Doha, you 'll begin to have an idea how and what an airport should be, or look like

It's one thing for an executive order to be issued and another thing for the order to be obeyed. After all, the police are still collecting bribes on our roads despite all the reports and warnings...just saying
