NYSC addresses the loss of 3 Corps members during the on-going 2016 Batch 'B' orientation course

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has released a statement addressing the loss of three corp members in different camps across Nigeria, recently. The Management has promised to set up a committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes responsible for the loss.The statement reads;

The National Youth Service Corps regrets the loss of three Corps members, Elechi Chinyerum Nwenenda, Oladepo Ifedolapo (Read here) and Asuquo Ukeme Monday, (Read here) during the on-gong 2016 Batch 'B' (Stream I) Orientation Course in Bayelsa, Kano and Zamfara States respectively.

The death of the trio followed brief illnesses and after medical teams in the camps battled to save them in line with established procedures. Their demise, coming in their prime time when they were bracing up for further roles towards advancing their respective families, the nation and the rest of humanity, came as a rude shock to us in the NYSC family.

On behalf of the Management, staff and Corps members nationwide, I wish to express our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased Corps members. May the Almighty God grant them eternal rest and give their families and the rest of us the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.

While we mourn the demise of these Corps members, who, out of patriotic zeal, answered the clarion call to serve their fatherland, we are constrained to correct the impression of negligence being created in some quarters. Management wishes to state that the welfare of Corps members has always remained topmost in the priorities of the Scheme, and we have continued to strive to give our best in that regard. The policy of the Scheme regarding healthcare during Orientation course provides for the setting up of camp clinic manned by qualified Doctors and other Corps Health Personnel.

The clinics, which are also provided with drugs and other basic equipment, are detailed to render round-the-clock medical services on camp with standing arrangement to refer and ensure immediate movement of patients to more sophisticated health facilities when necessary. We want to inform the public that medical teams in our camps have always been guided by the procedures of practice and in the most professional ways possible.

However, in view of these unfortunate incidents in Bayelsa, Kano, and Zamfara states, Management has set up a high-powered committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the loss the Corps members.

Management appreciates the concern of stakeholders, and wishes to assure the general public, especially serving and prospective Corps members as well as parents and guardians that the Scheme will continue to take measures aimed at ensuring the security and general well being of youths enlisted to serve the nation on the platform of the Scheme.

What happened is downright unacceptable. Sheer negligence of sensitive issues was what killed those young Nigerians.Not only is NYSC supposed to investigate and find out the root cause of this but they should ensure that occurrences like this never happens in the future

Scrap nysc. It's a waste of time and national resources. But, of course, those that benefit in millions in this program will never allow it. Mostly key men from north

It would be interesting to know whether corps members posted to such high risk zones as riverine areas of Bayelsa and Rivers states are taught basic swimming as part of their orientation program and if buoyancy/life jackets were routinely issued/provided them for the period of their assignment. I am sure this isn't the first time a corps member had died from drowning.

They just sounded like GEJ who loved to set up committee for virtually anything.They only claim to investigate what happened but not tackle the major problems/challenges encountered by corpers

Just wondering where Zahra Buhari and other children of those in Naija's leadership completed their NYSC mandate. Or they are not reqd to fulfill same reqs as other young graduates? If they are, do they serve under same squalid conditions? Just asking bcos this gross negligence against Naija's youths MUST STOP NOW especially, if the youths stand up 4 their rights and lives. Otherwise, left to the "beavers", the next unfortunate incident is waiting to happen all over again and again. QED@atm

The NYSC has become a cursed scheme, the the devil has hijacked it and is using it as a way to kill the future leaders of Nigeria. It never used to be like this 20,30 years ago, we looked forward to service year as that was when most of us got out spouses, my niece served this year and I was not relieved till her mum called that she has passed out. No child of mine will go through the scheme. They won't even come to Nigeria to be sacrificed, useless country.

What the NYSC management is saying is rubbish. They should visit the Cross River State camp, where the condition is worst than prisoners camp. No light, toilet facilities are in shambles, meals prepared with contaminated water, etc. Someonetc or group of people should be held responsible for what is going on in most of ghost camps.

So Sad.... NYSC should give utmost priority to all corp members health ..corp members are not soldiers but civilians..The NYSC schme should be more of bonding of youths , service to the society and not regimental.Top Government officials who siphon moneys meant for corp members must be made to pay....RIP to the deceased.Parents and guardians please reject all unfavorable postings.
