Nike suspends Maria Sharapova after admitting to failed drugs test

SportsWear manufacturing giant Nike have suspended Maria Sharapova's $50m deal after the Russian athlete admitted to using a banned drug. The WTA ranked World No. 7 admitted in her press conference yesterday that she had been using performance enhancer drug meldonium for the last 10 years as part of a doctor's prescription for health issues and didn't know it was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency in December.

Sharapova, who is the world's highest earning female athlete, making as much as $20m in 2015 alone, might lose her other lucrative contracts with Tag Heuer, American Express, Porsche, Evian and Avon.

In a statement, Nike said:
“We are saddened and surprised by the news about Maria Sharapova. “We have decided to suspend our relationship with Maria while the investigation continues. We will continue to monitor the situation.”
Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion now faces a ban of up to four years which would end her career as a professional athlete.

Hmm, she's done career wise.

Silly people.
the drugs was only banned last year. And like she said she was using it for health reasons, they just probably found out something enhancing about the drugs.
Not like she was cheating.

No. The particularly substance just got on the WADA list beginning of this year.

Anonymous said...

Nope! Not going to happen! The substance on got on the banned list January of this year, so she will only be liable for anything from then. It cannot be retroactive. Her team needs to be fired though! Although she was also very careless!

What a way to end a blossoming career. How you end is more important than how you begin.

Ooh....My super Maria...hoping u bounce back

It should be infamous dunce . You are from the section of Nigeria that judges based on headlines. The drug was banned in January ewu

Unknown said...

It's well

But Infamous is right. That the drug just got banned recently, does not take away the fact that she had been cheating all these while. The drug enhances stamina and that was why she was using it. It has nothing to do with diabetes as she claimed. It just came to the notice of the sporting body probably because it was not well known. That drug is only being manufactured in Latvia. A cheat is a cheat whether the drug he/she is using to cheat has been banned or not. She took advantage of the fact that it was yet to come to the notice of the sporting body. Will u say that a Nigerian that uses a local performance enhancement concoction that is not yet know by the world body is not cheating? Of course he/she is a cheat.

I feel sorry for her. She's very entertaining to watch. She plays the match with all her heart. Left her mother as a small child to go and learn tennis in America. Night and day in the courts pursuing her passion. Very inspiring. Sad to read this about her. Hope something can be worked out soon.
The girl deserves another chance
