I knew the daily won't live long! Peeps don't like the her for the adulterated news reports and acts of pulling individuals down. Rest In Peace.
If this story is true, can't say I'm surprised; there were a few things wrong with the newspaper; scanty news stories among other issues. However, and most importantly, the paper had virtually no adverts which remain the main source of revenue for any newspaper. Sad story really, as Next articles have the highest quality of writing in Nigeria (read other papers and despair at the spelling & grammatical errors)
business and success in business is driven by dream, vision and ...along the line... 'greed'. this is not to say 'greed' is bad no, not at all. greed is good.
methinks next newspaper had their nitch very much wrapped up with just publishing weekend and online only. who say's they have to be daily to be very profitable?
as with most business, you succeed and you wanna line extend the business; on and on and on and on and on.......then, the 'l believe l can fly'...thing had set in and the original vision has been diluted.
a commedian...build his acts and he gets good at it. after sometimes he says to himself....chei, success good o and he tries his hand with acting, he tries mcee, becomes a film producer,goes into event planning, start publishing, open a comedy school. another example, a bank....opens a mortgage bank, insurance, re-insurance, finance firm, set up an HMO, a recruitment agency, a private cemetery, procurement company. so many other example abound.
for next it is not to late to keep the vision tight and single-minded. resting the daily fits into this mold.
Pity, so the Publisher couldn't find one of these millionaires to buy into his paper? All the moneybags who were giving them info to smear people caouldn't invest in the paper?
i can write an epistle on this one. first of all,the quality of their writing is top notch. However, this is a universal truth that newspaper publishing is a very capital intensive venture and you must have deep pockets to be able to survive the earliy years. info on the street says that NEXT was/is running on bank loans.that is the most suicidal form of financing for a newspaper.in a buisness that you can't guarantee fast growth. most 'successful' newspapers in Nigeria are being bankrolled by politicians and most are not entirely for profit reasons. Even Thisday had its days of trouble irrespective of Nduka Obiagbeina's showbiz image that painted a rosy picture. I wish NEXT the best but considering the unsophisticted nature of the Nigerian reading public,i wonder how they will make their online platform profitable.If they find a way,amybe they can sell the secret to Ruphert Murdoch and his likes as that is a nut that is yet to be cracked by anyone.
