Nigerian soldiers reluctant to fight – US General

A US General on Thursday May 15th, said the Nigerian military is becoming afraid of engaging Boko Haram insurgents and this might affect the US level of involvement in finding the missing girls

Punch reports
Testifying on Thursday before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the US Air Force Chief of staff, Gen. Mark Welsh III, said, “We’re now looking at a military force that is, quite frankly, becoming afraid to even engage. The United States doesn’t have the capacity, the capability to go rescue every kidnapped person around the world.”
The New York Times reported that the US might choose to minimize its involvement in the search for the over 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram due to doubts over Nigeria’s military capabilities. Continue...
Saturday PUNCH learnt that the US had questioned the ability of the Nigerian military to rescue the girls even with international help.

The Pentagon’s Principal Director for African Affairs, Alice Friend, also said, “The Nigerian military has the same challenges with corruption that every other institution in Nigeria does. Much of the funding that goes to the Nigerian military is skimmed off the top, if you will.”

US officials have also said that its involvement had also been made difficult because Nigerian officials ignored past warnings to soften brutal tactics that only fuelled the Boko Haram’s insurgency.
At Thursday’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, officials condemned the kidnappings and committed American aid to help rescue the girls. But they also expressed frustration at Nigeria’s political and military leaders for failing to heed Washington’s warnings about the extremist group.
“We have been urging Nigeria to reform its approach to Boko Haram,” Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Robert Jackson, said.

He added, “From our own difficult experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq, we know that turning the tide of an insurgency requires more than force. The state must demonstrate to its citizens that it can protect them and offer them opportunity. When soldiers destroy towns, kill civilians and detain innocent people with impunity, mistrust takes root.”

A retired Head of the US military’s Africa Command, Gen. Carter Ham, said, “My sense is that US Government will remain in a supporting role to Nigeria. I do not think the U.S.G. will seek unilateral action.”

The size of the Sambisa Forest is also believed to make the search for the girls difficult.
“We are basically searching for these girls in an area that’s roughly the size of West Virginia, so it’s a tough challenge, to be sure,” state Department spokesman, Marie Harf, said on Thursday.

Na wa oh... Look at the scared clowns they are training in this country. If I remember well, those adamawa boys who killed boko haram peeps said the same thing. I think our aspiring soldiers should be going abroad for training if this is how all of them turn out to be.

The government should boost the moral of the soldiers by giving them sophiscated arms and dismissing cowardly soldiers.joining the army is not for office desk work but combat in times like this. Period via dachizzle

The US should help Nigeria Army because the state of emergency in North East is not working. Everyday the boko boys will attack a community for 3-4 hours the army will show after the operation

Nigeria's distrust of the US marines presence in Nigeria will be our undoing. We know we need help, and yet we are afraid of the price. If the army is developing cold feet to engage, then they should hand over their arms and ammunitions to civilians who are willing to fight for their luvd ones coz they lost almost everything.

Hmmmn! I have a feeling that the US will abandon the search for these girls because of the incompetence of the Nigerian military.
In regards to the location of the girls, I don't know why all d witches, wizards, babalawos and prophets (TB Joshua and Co.) In Nigeria can't come together to find these girls.
The only thing Nigerians are good for is finding ways to kill one another or prophesying about football matches.

Why wouldn't they be afraid, when their superiors have neglected them, when they are being maltreated, when their are no weapons to fight, when they are underpaid, when their morals have been reduced to nothing, when their spirits have been dealt a big blow, when they will die for nothing and nobody or the government will remember them or their families, when after laying their life for the war, their children will keep on suffering, when their is no hope for their future #smh I sorry for Nigeria

Top Military officials in Nigeria are among the richiest people in government, they divert the money meant to fight insurgency into their pocket, leaving the poor ordinary soldiers in the field with nothing to fight the insurgency.
I just pity those living in Borno Adamawa n Yobe, d option left for them is to just get ready to defend themselves.

I'm not surprised though.....Nigerian Soldiers are only good at showing superiority over the Nigerian Police and the harmless citizens. There is always unhealthy rivalry between our Soldiers and Police and this is something you will never ever see happen in the western world. Soldiers are described as technocrats, charged with the responsibilty of defending the country against external aggression....but they are obviously not up to the task. Let's not rely on our Military for miracles to happen, rather let's look up to God Who is able to confuse and consume the Boko Haram militants.....May God bless you, Linda Ikeji for your good work

off course that why the situation is like this, but they are not scared, but they don't believe BoKO Haram is the enemy, 80% of Nigeria army soldiers are Hausa speaking, why tell them to kill their brothers and sister... turn the case around and let this happen in south, east or west and you see how this fools will burn and kill innocent citizen, if a single of their colleague get kill. the truth is that majority of the BOKO HARAM leaders has military connection, either they are still soldiers or left without proper resignation, they are not like soldiers from other part of the world that swell allegiance to their Nation, this ones swell allegiance to Hausa first before Nigeria... if we don't stop the speaking of Hausa as the lingua franca in Nigeria army even when this is resolved next time situation like this happen it will still be the same thing, reluctant to fight their brothers and sister..

My father's youngest brother who is in the Nigerian army has bn in a forest since the Independent day bomb blast (IBB). He had to leave his children with us. He can't even afford to send money to his children because they are underpaid. He can't resign because his pension will be peanuts like his salary. He doesn't receive any benefits for his military work as a result of too many ogas at the top. If he he gets killed by the boko haram devils, he is just going to be among the numbers of fallen soldiers.

Anonymous said...

Growing up, we were always been informed that Nigeria is the Giant of Africa...we sent Nigerian soldiers to die in Liberia, Sierra Leone and other African countries that has regional conflict...even GEJ was boasting at one time that his govt is doing so much in peace keeping missions around in regional Africa...but today, we can't use our own military to defend us; they dont even obey command anymore, to fight and defend our sovereignity as a nation and squash any enemies...their 'ogas' are eating their money at the top while they are scrounging to survive by attacking innocent Nigerian whom they are supposed to protecting...they dont have arms or d moral courage to fight the country's enemy, Boko Haram!!!
We are finished as a nation...corruption has finally killed us! Nigeria is now a dying carcass. Everyman to himself, God for us all.
As for me, I'm buying an AK47 and a Gluck 19 ready for the war to start...anytime the Boko boys come for battle, I'm ready!! #All die na die
