Aerial view images of flooding around River Niger in Lokoja

The images were released by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and shows the extent of the flooding in the city caused by the overflowing River Niger, which is virtually cutting off the Northern part of the country from the South. A lot of small villages in Lokoja and Kogi will soon be wiped out if nothing is done soon. The flooding has left many dead, thousands homeless, and movement from one place to the other impossible.

The flooding started about two weeks ago after Cameroon released water from the Lagdo Dam.
The minister of works said that the level of water seen in the past two weeks has not been seen in the last 100 years.

The federal government has contracted three major construction companies to free the submerged Lokoja-Abuja highway from flooding...and NEMA is currently camping thousands of displaced flood victims. More photos when you continue...

It's so unfortunate. I sympathise with the affected victims of the disaster. However, this is what happens when we manipulate natural flood plans. Such a shame...

Linda, this is so sad. I experienced the whole thing, it is not a pleasant one. Children?families trapped on one side of the road, and the submerged houses. The sad part is that people are using this means to exploit people, food and other basic amenities being sold for exorbitant prices, instead of helping them. This is the height of wickedness.

NEMA surely took their time. Please save these people.

This is a pathetic situation and my heart goes out to all involved. Seriously speaking, do we have to wait for last minute to prepare for situations like this, Kogi is below sea level, I bet they don't have good drainage systems, I have travelled past Lokoja and the road is bad. Most politicians have to pass through Lokoja to get to Abuja and they know this axis has an issue and they wouldn't pay any attention until things like this happen. Even if the state government wouldn't live up to its responsibilities, don't they have activists who would have come out today amd said 'we have complained but no one listened'. It's painful that it had to deteriorated to this and we can't help most of these people, Lord help us. Meanwhile, flood has swallowed my state capital Asaba, NEMA move down by air. God bless us.

Good day dear all!
Life is good and honestly very good but better when lived in Christ.
Life without Christ is full of crisis. For what shall if profit a man if he gains the whole world and loose his soul?
Beloved think about it. Why not give your life to Jesus Christ today? I assure you; you will never regret it
Give your life a meaning today.

How come most floods in Nigeria are caused by the release of water from a dam. Seems more human caused than a Natural Disaster. Isn't it about time they predict the damage before actually causing the damage........

Sweetie...calm dwn and go eazi on d Cameroonians,,dey av bn apologizing and telling our govt 4d past 6 months to prepare &gt a way out 4ds cos opening up their dam was necessary as their dam walls was been weakened wiv d high velocity of water flow this year so our 'irresponsible' govt was aware but in their usual habit, waited until it happened, lives gone and properties destroyed before reacting...a sane govt shud av tot about informing its citizens(ESP PEOPLE LIKE YOU),carry all along, create alternative housing and routes 4dose that would be affected and avoid this bad news yet again from Nigeria @least they had more than 6 months 2plan 4ds...and what surprises me d most is,if I(a very young Nigerian) can think about this, why can't all those matured minds in power think about this and even better ways of avoiding disasters and bad news..I criosli weep 4my country...

Katrina and Japan were natural disasters, this, however, was a planned exercise, and our ever so competent govt.were warned WAY ahead of time to make appropriate plans. My heart goes out to all those that lost their lives and the homeless as well. We are really the architects of our own misery.

This is all so sad, my heart goes out to all the families that have been affected by this flood. But it really baffles me how our leaders treat issues of life as though they mean nothing. If they were warned ahead of time should they not have avoided this? I really think we need to pray for these leaders to be more sensitive to human lives,

Nah just kabawa rd leading to Nataco and Ganaja area. Lokongoma isn't affected

just a patriotic Nigerian. said...

I had no I idea it was this bad and I also had no idea what the cause was. It's sad that our govt Is busy looting money while we the masses are suffering, I wonder what the governor is also doing and our dear GEJ. I love Nigeria but sometimes I wish I wasn't nigerian but I also can't say I don't thank God I am Nigerian who knows if I would hv been a Katrina victim? However I wish we would stop saying God come to our rescue and start thinking out ways to oppose our corrupt govt I think God has done a lot for us by making us a nation. Sadly instead of thinking out ways to make our country better we also cheat, kill and commit heinous crimes against ourselves. Then there are our pastors who just buy private jets and build schools with expensive tuition fees, theses ppl have the money and thus can afford resources to come to the aid of these victims but know they also rob the poor to make themselves rich sha k leave that to God to judge. What i'm only trying to.say is the change we seek starts with us but we just don't care for others as long as we are safe, we can only sit down and say repent, wish flood on some extremist states and say God help the victims like really he will send down his angels with mop and bucket to dry the flood. We can only ask for his grace to survive this because all the help these victims need is in us thus he can only help them thru us his people. This flooding affects each and everyone of us where ever we our bcos this lokoja road connects us all in some way. I will love to suggest we help out in our own little way by setting up donation centers and volunteering our time too. Donation can range from bathroom slippers to wrappers and food items because these ppl have lost a lot and any help we can give will surely go a long way. If we can do this I believe God I infinite mercy will see us as a nation worth saving really. I'm in enugu and i'm typing this at 2am. I may not have made sense but if we really care for these ppl as we profess, we can start doing sumfin in the most minute way possible we will be surprised at how we can make a change and build up hope and trust in ourselves. Like I said earlier I had no idea how bad it was I only heard and saw I picture or 2 but now I hv seen this I am compelled to act not because I am rich cos as of ryt now I am extremely broke my accts are in red but I hv a roof over my head and I don't go to bed hungry thus I am in a very capable position of helping out. Let us be the change we seek. I will go to my local church and tell my pastor wat I suggest we do, I will also love to call on all readers to please join me to take this step as our govt can't go it alone. Please let this not be a post we just read, give our heartfelt comment of pity and God help us and then move along to the next post. Linda I will love it if you use your blog to call all nigerians to help out. Thank you and God bless you all as we make ourselves a blessing to these victims.

Ecological warfare. When your neighbors can decimate thousands of you, you gotta wonder what is the real intent. As we proceed with ignoring our ecosystems and continue to physically develop our environment not even like animals would (cos they are in sync with the ecosystem), we should expect more of this. I am waiting for all those mega buildings in Lekki to one day be in a picture like this. No ill wishes but how much can you push the ocean back and how much wetlands can you destroy in the name of development before the ocean itself comes surging? Let us remember Katrina - no need repeating well known mistakes.

The sooner Nigerians realize that the government, be it Goodluck or Badluck, OBJ or the monkey man, they are all the same. No brains, busy thinking about I, ME and MYSELF and the rest of the time they have, going to weddings, burial ceremonies, naming ceremonies and other celeberations of themselves or giving out awards to crooks and lunatics amongst them.

This flood is not a natural disaster, they have known about it forever, and knowing the stupid asses we have up there, they are all saying "it wont be our portion, God is on our side and all the stupidest things morons dont even ascribe to rather than start finding solutions.

What business did Jonothan had to go do at the UN when a whole state is submerged under water. I bet they are using buckets to bale the waters.

I am sick to my stomach and wish I hadnt come back to this God forsaken lunatic ounrty where people depend on GOD to literally come DOWN from HEAVENS and do everything for them. Heaven helps thise who help themselves.

The ministers, commissioners, president, senators and the congress men plan their parties a year ahead so it can be the best party ever thrown. They compete for spaces on ThisDAY and other magazines with their ugly mother fucking selves wrinkle faced wives looking like assholes without any thought for th epoor ones.

Fashola is working and when it drizzles the entire Lagos metropolis is at a stand still because everywhere is flooded. Is he waiting for LEKKI. VI and IKOYI to sink beofre they can start looking for remedies? WAKE UP PEOPLE. WE NEED A REVOLUTION, I DONT KNOW HOW TO START IT BUT SOMETHING HAS TO YIELD.

Look at the poor souls in Lokoja, they are the ones who will bare the brunt of the disaster. Most are dead like chickens, houses lost and famr lands ruined, the funky ass idiots are on TV speaking the english they do not even know how and by tomorrow, everybody forgets and life goes on. I AM VERY SAD AND SORRY FOR THIS BLESSED COUNRTY THAT IS BEING RUINED BY THE VERY PEOLPE THAT SHOULD BE SAVING IT.

This is truly sad. These are sign of changing times sha. I just hope that NEMA for once would live up to their duties.

But there really should be a way for ordinary Nigerians to assist the victims of the flood rather than leaving it all to NEMA #justsaying
