INEC suspends announcement of results in Rivers rerun elections

INEC has suspended the announcement of results from last Saturday's National and State Assembly election in Rivers state. The election was marred by high incidents of violence. The suspension is contained in a statement released by Oluwole Osaze- Uzzi, INEC's Director of Voter Education and Publicity. The statement reads in part

"The elections witnessed the disruption of the process, including the barricading of some of the INEC Local Government offices and Registration Area Centres(RACs) used for the distribution of Electoral materials which led to the late commencement of the exercise in some places and consequently, its smooth take off. Of more serious concern was the level of threats, violence and intimidation of election officials and voters by well armed thugs and miscreants allegedly acting on behalf of some politicians, which marred the elections in some areas. There were reports of numerous attacks resulting in fatalities, kidnappings, ballot snatching, diversion of officials and materials, amongst others, which necessitated its suspension in 8 Local Government Areas. Regrettably, such deviant behaviour has continued today. Several permanent and ad hoc staff engaged have been attacked, again resulting in fatalities, while some have been forcibly abducted and taken to presently unknown destinations. Under such difficult circumstance, the Returning Officers were only able to collate and declare results in 1 Federal and 9 State constituencies where the disruption and malpractices were not so widespread. Having reviewed the situation, the Commission is compelled to suspend all further action concerning the exercise in all the other constituencies in the State pending the receipt of a comprehensive report from its Field Officials and Monitors. For the avoidance of doubt, it should be noted that the suspension does not affect the constituencies where the exercise has been completed and the results declared by the Returning Officers”.

You can't call what went down on Saturday in Rivers an election...it was more like a carnival. The best bet is for them to cancel the election, and look for an unorthodox way to get people's votes. Maybe use a census style where INEC officials will go to people's homes to collect their votes, and no other persons would be allowed to move around.

no be only 'state of emergency' dem go declare...na 'nation of peace'.

how wont apc want state of emergency? its an easy way for the federal might to hold sway in rivers state by force. its NOT going to happen. make dem try am if they have ten heads: then they will see niger delta war....

Why a president cannot even pretend to be atatesman for once and urge for calm among both political parties and along every side of the divide is beyond me. he remains quite as the blood of the people of the Niger Delta continues to spill...just because his 'boys' are partly to blame for the mayhem. God will judge him.

a beg go and read up your constitution, there are clear cut rules about what qualifies for a state of emergency. all these federal appointees that have left the work they gave them to do in Abuja and have now turned to INEC officers are not strong enough to make it happen. make una dey dey find trouble. we no go gree oh!

Buhari, since he came to power has not been able to conduct one free and fair election. Everything about Buhari is failure. I hv been saying this for a long time now, why would people have to die because of election? Why not the federal government abduct transparent elections like the OPEN BALLOT SYSTEM or go for the option A4 that was used during the 1993 presidential election? With these systems, there would be no need for ballot paper snatching. People would be counted instead of papers. That would reduce a lot of death as the results would be clear for every one to see. Linda ikeji, please join this Movement to force the Federal government through the National Assembly to enact law that would bring the OPEN BALLOT SYSTEM to play in all future elections.Linda, ain't you tired of reporting killings everyday especially the ones that are not necessary? Once there is transparency, politicians can no longer manipulate election results by killings, ballot box snatching and intimidation with members of the Army. A question though, what business is the military with elections of civilians? Theirs is to protect the country from external threat and the police is to take care of internal squabbles.
