Lagos State Govt begins integrity tests on Lekki Gardens buildings

Less than two weeks after a building under construction by Lekki Gardens collapsed, killing no fewer than 35 people, Lagos State Govt says stability tests on buildings constructed by the building company to ascertain their structural integrity have commenced.

According to the acting General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory, Rasheed Balogun, the test is to ascertain the 'liveability status' of all buildings constructed by Lekki Gardens.

He said the tests would be non-destructive test and partial destructive in some cases. It would also be extended to other construction sites and estates within and around the Lekki area to confirm their status.

According to Mr Balogun, the tests will be conducted on some buildings without sending away the occupants in the Lekki Gardens Estate in order not to cause them discomfort. However, he said vacating the structures was the best option and would speed up the testing process.

He urged the occupiers of structures within the Lekki Gardens Estate, to comply with the vacation order of the governor, and vacate the buildings until investigations were completed.

In this case, it's the best thing to do. Just maybe such tests would be done in the future after other buildings are completed. This is one too many building collapse in lagos

Hembafan said...

I am sure they would give a true account. Because if any other building collapses, it would be wahala for the experts.

Govts in Nigeria are so irresponsible that they act only when damages has be done.

EIA are not fone for buildings. There are other required test... Like soil test.

So they have integrity testers and they sit in there offices every day like there is no work. This is just gross misconduct. In a standard construction and fabrication there qa/qc

Unknown said...

Qa/qc personnel that run test of the materials before the final product is approved. Here in Nigeria once you bribe you have ur way. Price is you pay for not doing things right is always higher.

Very good. All those using fake inferior materials to build houses just because they want to save some money for their selfish selves at the expense of people's lives, will all go to jail.

But hope they will look for hotels or temporary accommodation or guest house for the occupants? You cant just tell them to move without alternative arrangement. What if they have nowhere to go? What if they have no relatives in Lagos? Please Lagos state should be reasonable and considerate.
