The math is wrong. There is no missing $1.

You borrowed $50 from your dad and $50 from you mum. You bought a shirt for $97, and you have $3 for change. You give a dollar each to your mum and dad, and you're left with $1.

Now you owe your dad $49 and your mum $49. You have $98 to pay back all together.

In essence, your dad has $1 and your mum has $1. You have $49 to give to your dad, and $49 to give to your mum. The right math would actually be: $1 (with your mum) + $1 (with your dad) + $49 (which you owe your dad) + $49 (which you owe your mum) = $100.

You CANNOT include the $1 with you in the math, because the math is (or really should be) about how much you collected from your dad and mum ($100), how much you owe them after collection ($100), how much you gave them back ($2), and how much you have left to give ($98 = $49 for Dad and $49 for Mum).

You can thank me later ;)

Chucks.

No $1 is missing, for me to av returned $1 each, then I owe mum and dad $98.... So I am to return $49 each... So the money on me is part of the $49 for me to return

Mathematically:
$2 + $49 + $49 = $100.

In essence its also known as $2 that I av returned + $48.50 + $48.50 + the remaining $1 with me makes $100

Best Answer There is no missing dollar. BEFORE: Mom: $50 Dad: $50 You: $0 TGTAL: $100 AFTER: Mom: $1 Dad: $1 Shirt: $97 You: $1 TGTAL: $100 =) What you owe your parents is unrelated to where the actual money is.

Emeka Ihebie said...

Wrong calculation Lindodo!!!The secret is in dividing what you owe between the debtors.When you bought the shirt for $97 it means you actually owe your parents $97 divided by two which equals $48.50 apiece. So if you initially split the $3 with you between them, at $1.50 apiece, each are supposed to receive $48.5 + $1.50 which equals $50 initially borrowed from each. So when you give each of them $1 back, each of them is actually supposed to have $48.50 + $1 which equals to $49.50(not $49 as stated!!!) apiece. $49.50 + $49.50 equals $90 plus the $1 you are holding equals $100. QED. Any prize for this? Please let me know so I can send my account number..Loool!!!

The whole question is filled with errors because for starters you can't give each parent =N=49, this will amount to =N=98 if it is added up. The top is not an 'even number;'97'. So for me its (48.5 + 48.5 + 1 + 1 + 1)!

You are the one dat made a mistake. You are adding a $1 asset to a $98 liability. The asset and liability are meant to be equal to $98.
Initial B.S
Asset
Goods = $97
Cash = $3
Total Asset = $100
Liability
Debt = $100

Balance sheet after payment of $2 would be;
Asset
Goods = $97
Cash = 3 - 2 = $1
Total asset = $98
Liability
Debt = $100 - $2 = $98.

Anonymous said...

You are not supposed to add the $1 left with you cos $49 represents the amount u owe ur parents and you cannot owe your self so it shouldnt be added but subtracted to give us $97.

Anonymous said...

You spent $48.50 from each of the $50 you got. $48.50*2= $97.00. If you returned $2 and kept $1 back, then there's no missing dollar.

97/2=48.5 per parent,then an additional $1 each from the three dollar change would amount to 49.5
so 49.5x2= $99+$1 change remaining wyt d boi mks it $100.

Anonymous said...

first of all, no $1 is missing..$50 from both parent equals $100...buying the shirt for $97 means each parent donated $48.5($48.5+$48.5=$97)..he returned $1 back to each parent making it $49.5 and so the last $1 divided into 2 would make $50 back...so since he just returned $1 back, he still owes $49..no missing $1

When you paid back $1 apiece back, each of them is supposed to be owing each of them $49.50 and not $49.

The $1 you kept is not meant to be added to what you owe, which is the $98. If you give the $1 you kept to either your mom or dad, then you would owe one of them $48 and the other $49. To determine the total amount borrowed, what you kept should not be added to what you owe in this particular scenario.

Anonymous said...

one of your readers took it...lol

Anonymous said...

lets re-arrange the equation.
1. you borrowed $50 each from dad and mum, and returned $1 back to each of them.
2. so you owe both of them $49 each, meaning you have $49 + $49 = $98
3. shirt cost $97
4. $98 = $97(Cost of shirt) + $1 (with you)

eqn balance. there is no $1 left anywhere.

its with d shirt seller . Cos u bot d shirt 97, meaning mum n pop actually paid $48.50 each, adding the $1 refund it gives $49.50 each, giving u a total of $99 den ur own $1 makes it complete.

You spent $97, and gave $1 to each parent and kept $1 which equals $100.
You owed each parent $49 (total $98) and paid each parent $1 (total $2) = $100. If you paid the $1 you kept for yourself back to your parents, then the reduced amount you would've owed them would be $97.

If you have a balance of $3 from the $100 you borrowed that means you bought the item for $97. To know the amount of money still being owed that you don't have at hand;
Divide the purchase amount by two
97/2=48.5
If you refund $1 each to your parents that means you still owe each of them $49.
Change the $1 you are left with into two and add to the amount you owe each of them that you don't have at hand i.e $48.5+$0.5=$49
($1+$0.5+$48.5)*2=$100

Anonymous said...

Simple explanation. if you paid back mom and dad $1 each, you actually borrowed $49 each for the shirt, which gives a total of $98 so shirt($97) + change ($1) = $98.
Complex explanation. The trick is in mixing borrowed with spent. say I have is H and borrowed is B and Spent is S (B=H+S). So I borrow $100 then my B=$100, my H=$100 and my S=$0 (100=100+0). so I buy my shirt B=$100, H=$3, s=$97 (100=97+3). I pay mom and dad $1 each.(if paying back is me spending my borrowed money) then B(1) is still=$100, H(1)=$1, S=$99 or I can say paying back reduces my borrowed which now mean B(2)=$98, S=$97, H(1)=$1. So the tricky question was why is B(2)+H(1) not equal to B(1). hope I didn't confuse u

There is no missing dollar because u owe your parents $49 + $49 = $98. YOu have $1 with you and u bought the shirt for $97. The $97 for the shirt plus your $1 equals the amount you are owing. The $1 you added at the end is illogical.

Unknown said...

You don't need to add the $1 that you took. It is included in the $49 you owe each of your parents.
Therefore the equasion equals $2. In effect, the missing dollar is sitting in front of you unaccounted for because you took it.

Well, the $1 dollar, i think is with me. Reason being that, since I collected a total of $100 from my parents and gave back to my parents a total of 2 dollar remaining $98. I just need $97 dollars plus my $1 to complete the payment.

The $1 is in the money he used to buy the shirt so therefore, i would say there is no missing dollar since he got the shirt for $97 and borrowed $100 and in return he has a change of $3 and gave his mum and dad $1 each and keeping $1, so the calculation goes this way; $97+$1+$1+$1=$100. thanks

Let Me Explain As Easy as I Can.. Its Easy Accounting...
We are dealing with 5 Variables Here.. The Store, You, Your Mom, Your Dad and Where You Eventually get the $98 because it didnt fall from the sky(Let me call that Lender)

1st You see the Shirt, You have no money, you have not paid the store so its

Store = 0
You = 0
Mom = 50
Dad = 50
Lender = 98

Total of all Amounts = 198
...................................
Now U Get $50 from Dad and Mom

Store = 0
You = 100
Mom = 0
Dad = 0
Lender = 98

Total of all Amounts = 198
...................................
Now You Pay The Store

Store = 97
You = 3
Mom = 0
Dad = 0
Lender = 98
Total of all Amounts = 198
...................................

You Give Mom and Dad $1 Each

Store 97
You = 1
Mom = 1
Dad = 1
Lender = 98

Total of all Amounts = 198
...................................
You Lend a 2nd 98 to Pay your Dad and Mom

Store 97
You = 99
Mom = 1
Dad = 1
Lender = 0

Total of all Amounts = 198
...................................
You now Pay 49 Each to Dad and Mom

Store 97
You = 1
Mom = 50
Dad = 50
Lender = 0

Total of all Amounts = 198

Now Money Is Missing

simple arithmetic, Mun50-1+Dad50-1=98-shirt97=1, this implies you will be owing ur mum 48.5 and your dad 48.5 to give u a balance payable(owing)of $97. So the Concluding part of ur logic in arranging the numbers was wrongly presented, bcos the mathematical signs are not dsame.e.g it should be amount owed $49+$49-the cash of $1 u held on to from the initial balance of $3(100-97)b4 paying the $2(i.e 1+1 given to mum&dad). Meaning the balance U OWE IS $97(49+49-1).Meaning u owe each person 48.5. 48.5x2=97.Therefore NO MISSING DOLLAR IN THE TRANSACTION! Diego Amando Simeone said so

(50-1)+(50-1)=97+1
49+49=98(account balanced, no missing money.)

Its a math error and doesn't make sense, you can't pay debt with debt.Even the $1 is still not yours. The $100 was given to you as a loan, so however you are paying back must be in full regardless of whether there was a change or not, otherwise you would have just borrowed $97.

Anonymous said...

Linda, your equation is wrong: adding debt and non debt. I owe my parents $100, this is the basic issue here. My change from the purchase is imaterial. After my purchase and i decide to start paying back by giving them $1 each, my debt now stands at $98. It is mathematically wrong to add my total debt ($98) to $1 and expect them to add up to $100. what u should add is $97 for the shirt, $2 for my parents and $1 for me: 97+2+1=100. If you are returning the change to them, then what they borrowed you is $48.5 each since $97/2 is $48.5. However instead of giving them $3, you gave them $2 i.e $1 dollar each.$48.5 + the $1 change = $49.5. You have $1 left out of the change which when divided into two will give $0.5 (or 50 cents). Therefore, once you return one dollar each to mum and dad what you are then owing is $48.5 + $0.5 which = $49 each

Linda, whoever came up with that formular is an olodo cuz the person should not be adding the remaining $1 change to the $98. If you've paid $2 back to mum and dad, then the remaining $1 is the difference between the remaining money owed i.e $98 and the actual money spent. Thus, the remaining $1 change should not have been added to $98 but subtracted from it to give the actual money spent on the goods.

Why dollars in Nigeria. Linda, you should be Niger-oriented. Now if it was Naira denominated, it would have been easier for me to solve. UP NIGERIA

∑fx + ∑x = (98 +1) + (1) = $100
No $ missing!

Linda, the missing 1N is with boy. They 1N he kept he has to add N97 to make N98 and gv his parents to make it N100 if he hadn't spent it, but if he had spent it, he gat to get the complete N98 naira to square them up.

Anonymous said...

You don't need to add the $1 that you took. It is included in the $49 you owe each of your parents.
Therefore the equasion equals $2.

You borrow $50 from each of your parents ($100)
You buy your shirt -$97 =($3).
You give $1 each back to your parents = ($1)

What you owe your parents is $50 - $1 each, ($49x2) = $98.
The dollar that you took is included in the $98.
So, $98 plus the $2 that you gave your parents =$100.

In effect, the missing dollar is sitting in front of you unaccounted for because you took it.

Anonymous said...

$100 - $2 = $98 - $97 = $1 or $97 + $1 + $1 = £99 + 1 = $100

in actual fact, 97naira - the cost price divided by 2 (mom and dad) is 48.5naira, add the 1naira he gave each parent(48.5naira X 2 = 99naira ( + 1naira left with him ) =100naira. so in actual fact, he owes his parents 49.5naira, and not 49naira

Unknown said...

in actual fact, he bought the item for 97naira ( divided by both parents, that's 48.5naira owed either parent.
48.5naira + 1naira (given each parent ) =49.5naira (X 2 =99naira ) 99naira + 1naira (left with the chap) = 100naira.
So he actually owe either parent 49.5naira and not 49naira.

the remaining $1 is part of the money for the shirt.

the remaining $1 is part of the money for the shirt.

simple solution.The guy only borrowed $98 from his parents, bought the shirt for $97 and has the remaining $1 to himself.

Munwa said...

if you buy the shirt for $97 and have $3 change it means u owe you parents $48.50 each now add the $1 you gave each of them you'll get $49.5. Now multiply $49.5 by 2 and you'll get $99. add the remaining $1 with you and your $100 is complete. I studied mathematics baby.

oyelere said...

the $1 is with whom sold u the shirt. the shirt was sold for $97 meaning $48 each from both dad and mums $50
$48+$48= $96
the shirt sold for $97
$97-$96= $1(missing)
now return $1 to dad and mum each makes it $49.
now $49+$49+$1(with u)+$1(missing)=100.

Unknown said...

u had 100, u bought a shirt 97, u had 3 left, u gave mum one and gave dad one, the remaining u kept. i.e $97 for the shirt + $1 for mum (=$98) + $1 for dad (=$99) + $1 for you (=$100).

To those that dont still understand, its quite easy, u collected $100 from ur dad and mum and den u spent 97 naira, leaving u wit 3 naira. u gave 1 naira each back to ur parents dats 2 naira. The math is dis 98+2. y? This is because u cannot add your 1 naira cos it hasnt yet being spent, its still part of d 100 naira being borrowed. i hope any reader undastands dis. @Ayam_iphy

The solution is wrong. Yes, you cannot add the remainder i.e. 49 + 49, before subtracting the balance. The right approach is: Spent=97, Give back 1 each i.e. 1+1=2. To balance=49+49=98. 98-97=1...which you still have with you. So you either divide the 1 i.e. 1/2 each, Or you wait to get back the 97 and the 1 you have to make 97+1=98. Give back 49+49 each. That is it! Finally, 49+49+1+1=97+1+1+1(you kept)= 97+3. Give me my award now...

Linda there is no $1, you take $97 from $98 not $100. so what you get is $1 which is with you

Son borrowed from Mom & Dad =100$ and purchae an Item =97$ .
After purchased Item, cash @hand 3$ .
Return 2$ to M&D as part of the 100$ borrowed
and reserved 1k for himsrlf.

WORKING:

Item 97 devided by 2 return to M/D = 48.5 M/D
Reserved cash @ hand 1 + M/D 48.5 = 49.5 M/D
M/D 49.5 multiply by 2 = 99
Sum Total 99 + cash reserved 1.
99 + 1 = 100
Total + 100$

Income: 50+50=$100
Expenditure: 97+1+1=$99
Balance in your pocket: Income - Expenditure = $1
The $1 is in your pocket.

The answer is this...if you are giving $100 and asked to settle your debt and you give your daddy $49 and mum $49, the remaining will be $2. Of which $49 + $49= $98 + your $1= $99...so the prodigal $1 Will need to come home to regain his birth-right...thank you most rated Linda.

you go fear accountants and mathematicians na... Naija people no dey dull!

Unknown said...

Well!
My Name is TG from Port Harcourt.
The maths is simply straightforward, the answer is as follows:

Shirt value = $97
Borrowed Sum: Mum = $50
Dad = $50
Residual Balance = $3

Loan Repayment: Mum = $1
Dad = $1
You (the debtor) = $1

What you are owning is therefore,

Mum = -$49
Dad = -$49
so -$49 + -$49 = -$98 add the remaining $1 with you = -$97
Hence, you are still owning your Mum and Dad -$97

The minus sign exist because it is a debt.

So there is no $1 missing, instead the $1 dollar with you, will be shared to both, while you will still be in debt of $97.

Thanks and God bless you all.

No dollar missing. Its 48.5x2 97 plus 3 dollars.

Na wa o!!! Too many olodo here o. But some people did get the trick anyway. There was no missing dollar. It only seem so cos the maths in the puzzle is all wrong. The $98 he owes is parent is made up f the $97 already spent and the $1 change he didn't return. The puzzle had no business adding that $1 to the $98 again as it already is part of the $98. So, to get the $100 you simply add the $98 owed to the $2 already refunded. Gbim!!!

Anonymous said...

You owe $98. You don't owe the $1 you kept for your self.

Unknown said...

add ur 1$ to d shirt you bought =98$, then add the 2$ u gave out = 100$.
so there's no 1$ remaining linda.

Anonymous said...

There is no one dollar remaining you can't add your asset to your liability, the account is balanced. Add your one dollar to your $97 for the shirt which will give you $98 n your parents also have $98 . Assets = Liabilities.........

Anonymous said...

its so easy buh i dont know it :-)

Anonymous said...

you owe your parents $98 simple, why add the $1 that you never spent in the first place? you lent $100 you returned $2 now you are looking for $1 that's not lost abeg goan sit down.

Unknown said...

linda!!!!!! you no go school... why are you adding the 1$ that is with you with the money you are oweing your parent... instead you are meant to subtract the the 1$ with you from the 98$ which will give you the cost price 97$.. dooooooor!!!!!!!

Unknown said...

thats a crappy calculation.
if the shirt was to be converted to money back, he would have 97 and the he will add 1 with him making 98. gives dad 49 and mum 49, making it balanced.
97 - (49 + 49) +1 = 0
97 - 49 - 49 + 1 = 0

Another way is if he was to pay back and genuinely had another 100, he simply gives his dad 49, mum , 49 and he will be left 2. if he adds the 1 from the initial transaction, it will make 3 = the initial balance from the cost of shirt if he bought it with his money.

100 - (49 + 49) + 1 = 3
100 - 49 - 49) + 1 = 3 (initial balance from the purchase)

Dont get confused.
