Nigerian Man dies after cocaine burst in his stomach

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed the death of Edwin Ozoani, 34, a commercial bus driver, who died after a wrap of cocaine he ingested burst in his stomach.

Mitchell Ofoyeju, the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, said the deceased, who returned from Brazil on-board a South African Airline flight, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

"During screening, he tested positive to drug ingestion and was placed on observation," he said. "He excreted 10 wraps of substances that tested positive for cocaine, weighing 180 grammes. While still under observation, he complained of stomach pain and was rushed to the hospital where he eventually died. A post-mortem examination revealed that his death was due to one of the wraps of cocaine he ingested that ruptured in his stomach."

Reacting to the development, Ahmadu Giade, NDLEA Chairman, called for stiffer penalties against convicted drug traffickers.

"Until we get the penalty right, drug trafficking will remain attractive," he said. "Every case of drug trafficking involving type A drugs like cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine runs into several millions of naira. We must therefore wield the big stick against offenders to serve as deterrent. I am optimistic that adherence to stringent bail conditions and minimum of 15 years jail term will turn the tide of events.

This death is sad and painful. The deceased would have been alive to face trial and ultimately given opportunity to learn from his mistakes. I urge members of the public to shun drug trafficking and make quality choices that will enable them maximise their destinies."

The NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar added that the family members of the deceased have applied for the corpse to be released to them after the autopsy.

“Following the sad incident, we made contact with the family members," he said. "They also witnessed the operation where the ruptured wrap of cocaine that killed their son was recovered from his stomach. The agency has also granted their request for the corpse to be released to them.

This unfortunate death waa clearly due to necessity. Our people should choose better options that at of course crime-free.
The government and those criminals in power should make efforts to improve livelihood opportunities. That's the source of these inordinate risks.

Nigerians need to explore other options of occupation besides banking, stealing, prostituting, etc. Don't people sit down and think about how they can turn their hobbies into businesses. That's one of the most fulfilling things in life. Nigerians just want quick money and don't even care how they get it. Everyone wants to be as rich as Dangote in Nigeria.

Linda, I think you should set up conferences around Nig to educate people on how to be creative and earn a living from their passion. We can't wait for the leaders to provide jobs.

If you love doing people's hair why not start a biz in that area. If you love wigs, learn how to makes wigs an sell them. Many women will use their last naira to buy hair in Nigeria.

Good grief, Nigerians are still risking their lives by taking drugs in the name of making a quick buck??? If this commercial bus driver was able to make enough money to travel to Brazil, it can only mean that he was certainly well off enough to make something of himself in Nigeria but instead he chose to deal in drugs (assuming of course we can believe the story from NDLEA)

Aren't we tired of blaming Nigeria for people's stupidity and greed? Nothing is easy for so many people in Nigeria. In life, you have to work hard to be successful. Ashewo work to is not easy because of the emotional and physical abuse you go through. Why not use your brain to venture into an honest business. Especially in something that you have a passion for. Are you trying to tell me that Nigerians don't have interests besides crime? We are exactly like the leaders we criticize. Corrupt, lazy, and greedy.

We need role models other than doctors, lawyers, accountants etc. These foolish people need to see and hear of other Nigerians that had nothing but worked very hard to become successful in fields that don't necessarily require degrees because the reality is that not everyone will able to go to school. Open your f*cking minds and stop blaming Nigeria. If your ass gets caught for theft, you can't defend your case by saying Nigeria is to blame. Your ass will stay in jail for many years..even forever.. with other criminals and homosexuals who now happen to criminals, according to the foolish Nigerian law.

@ Anon, May 27, 2012 11:12 PM, don't you watch movies? These people who carry the drugs are usually pawns for the main drug dealers.
The main dealers stay behind the scenes and finance the trips for the pawns as well as their 'salaries' for the jobs carried out.
Till the dealers are fished out, the scourge will remain because they will always find some poor hustler who's tired of suffering and fancies making some quick money.

At this point we would like to blame the impoverished state of the country but the real thing here is, no matter the hardship we have to put up with in Nigerian or wherever we must be conscious of the choices we make. It's sad he had to lose his life because of his.

Further- May 28, 2012 2:51 AM- you have said it all- I wish other Nigerians could reason like you but they prefer to blame the so-called conditions of the country for their bad behavior. It is not as though Nigeria will not work if people are actually prepared to do something to help their fellow Nigerians- I met a woman who told me she was selling recharge cards and akara to put her 4 children through school while paying her rent and other bills. I met another woman who told me that she was selling pure water and is saving up to buy land to build a house. I met a student at UNILAG who told me she was working as a dressmaker to raise money for her tuition fees and living expenses. So clearly, there are people who are prepared to work hard.

PS- have you noted how it is nearly always our men who get caught for drug pushing??? Not women but men!
