Vanguard quoted a source as saying that the agreement to employ the staggered payment model followed a series of meetings between top executives of MTN Nigeria and South Africa with VP, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
“There have been series of meeting at the Presidency between Vice President Osinbajo and MTN team both from South Africa and the Nigerian arm. MTN wanted a waiver considering their level of investments in the country, but government did not buy the idea of waiver. Instead, I think there will be concession, but certainly not a waiver. At the conclusion of the meeting, the MTN people negotiated on how to stagger the payment. The Presidency is even angry because MTN was a signatory to the regulation, but they are failing to comply with rules.” the source added.

Patriotic customers should boycott MTN completely to show their solidarity with government. They look down on Nigerian customers and government as if everyone is a fool. I used to have a postpaid account when they arrived Nigeria. They ripped me off. Now they have taken to mass lottery and gambling for which they have no license and pay no tax. To dodge tax and rip the country off is a financial crime for which their top management and regulatory collaborators should be jailed without an option of fine to serve as a deterrent to other looters. To siphon the income of poor.African nations in which they operate and salt the money away in Tax Havens is a crime against humanity and Africans. The international community should rally round Nigeria and other African countries to stem these financial crimes.

The way these MTN people deduct money makes me wander if they think money rains on us every morning. I advise everyone using MTN to stop recharging airtime for now, unless money actually rains on you so bad that you dont have a clue of how to spend it.

...that's a lot of money in any currency. It is about 45% of our National budget. Asking a company to pay that much by a Country that is wooing investors is not encouraging. It's not sending the right signal to intending investors.
...I doubt if the issue here is whether MTN can afford it or not, is it really justifiable? I hope NCC and the Nigerian government will give account of the use they put it into.
...for most people abusing MTN, directly or indirectly I believe almost all Nigerians have someone directly or indirectly serviced by the company. Be careful what you wish.
