How a school in Ajah killed my son - grieving mother writes

I just got this email from a grieving mum who lost her 1 year old son last year at his creche in a school in Ajah. He choked to death while eating. Read her heartbreaking story below...
"Please share my story to the world. I would have sent this earlier but it took God's Grace and courage because I am still in pain. My son's name is Oluwatamilore Holloway. I enrolled him in Debiruss creche on the 16th of September as soon as he clocked 1 on the 13th of sept, 2014. He was loving and peaceful, but I wanted him to mingle with people. On the 26th of November, 2014, I was called by the school authority to meet them at Budo Hospital in Ajah around 2pm. I was in Ajah market so I rushed there, unfortunately I did not meet my Tamilore alive, he was dead, I asked them what happened and they couldn't give me an answer.
I was told probably he was dehydrated and the hospital told me he was brought in dead. I asked the Nanny what happened, she said he woke up and she was feeding him, that she gave him the first spoon and that when she was about to give him the second spoon, he started closing his eyes, thank God for autopsy which revealed that my son died due to Aspiration of Food particles in the lungs, definitely, he was choked to death with food.
As soon as they heard the result was out, they started coming to my house to beg me, they even went to my priest in church. It had to take the intervention of my priest that I should just leave everything to God.
They came to me and they offered to close down the creche and get a Nurse for the school and that they would write my Family an Apology letter , that was in January which I haven't gotten as I write this .
I also noticed that during Christmas they had the effontary to decorate their school, despite the fact that my son just died, they told me they had already contacted the decorator and that they couldn't stop him, they even had Christmas party which I felt it wasn't fair on my part.
I gave them 3 conditions that they should get a professional Nurse, get a CCTV for their school and they should get a Qualified child minder , but they only came back to tell me they were going to close the creche and that it will only be opened for the children of their staff.
On the 6th of May,I went to the school to find out what was happening, if they had truly closed the creche, I went in through the back gate and I went straight to the creche,I found out , they had no Nurse, one of the child minders who was working there, was still there, there was no CCTV and the crèche was not closed down, because I saw other children from outside who was also with my son in the crèche.  I was told they got a Nurse and I think the working conditions was not suitable for the Nurse so she had to leave.
My grievance is that they carried on in their normal Business as if nothing happened, and I expected them to do the needful, I did not even ask them for a dime, but I said for the sake of other children, they should get Qualified people who will take care of the children should in case first Aids has to be given but because they are money conscious, they would rather let the worst happen than prevent it, and what they do is to convert an ordinary cleaner to a Nanny or child minder to save cost. A Nanny who is not experienced and who can't even feed a child. They have to do the needful before they kill other children, who can't speak for themselves like my poor son.

Another reason for today's so called "working moms" to re-assess their priorities. God will hold these mothers responsible for abandoning their children in search or God-knows-what. As for the school, they should be sued and closed down.

I am so sorry about your loss. but wait o. What is the Lagos State ministry for education for? I advice you petition further. People should stop toying with children's lives. it's pathetic. Am sorry once again.

this is my first time commenting but felt the need to as this is heartbreaking and my heart goes out to this grieving mum.i had a driver with a drink problem who i let go for that reason but was shocked to my bones when i saw him driving a debirus school bus.i wondered how they vet drivers before allowing them drive peoples kids hence i rang the school to alert them of the driver/situation but still saw him driving weeks later.it shows this school has little or no value for kids they are meant to be custodians of....they really need to be investigated

First of all, I pity you, I can't imagine what what you are going through now.
Secondly, just leave everything in the hands of God, you've tried your best to make sure other children won't suffer your child's fate.

oh my God!! This so horrible, this place is near my house. I'm so sorry Tamilore's mum, may God ease your pain and burden. He will never leave you. This is the worst type of loss for anyone. I am currently looking for a creche for my child and this has really scared me. You cannot blame yourself, God is with you and may He continue to be with your family. I never comment on blogs but this is just horrendous. I will suggest you consider Legal Action because it is our lack of action that allows such incompetent people to continue to practice such evil. That school IS STILL open ,I go by the place everyday. Tamilore deserves justice, and like you rightly said other children must be protected. God bless you for your courage and I am deeply deeply sorry for your loss.

It is a pity life has been lost. My advise is that mothers should learn how to take care of their children themselves, no one can do that the way you would. Linda, can you PLEASE bring this case to the fore I beg of you. The creche should be permanently shut down, the school must lose its registration and licenses or what not, and someone must go to jail for this. The law has to prevail and we must do something to deter others. What impudence!!! Can someone in authority, our NGOs, human right organizations etc please ensure justice prevails Pls. Thanks Linda.

It is a pity. I will call my brother to go and withdraw his two children their immediately(DEBIROUS) we are not many in our family we can afford to loose any child upon all the 250,000. My brother is paying there as termly school fees on a child pple shd bear me witness. Am sorry ma'am on the loss of your son. but what baffles me this days is women send their child to creche at an early age, to me i prefer a nanny, my house has a cctv of which i watch wht happens in d office. A child is meant to start school once he is independent, once he can say mum i want to poo, eat, sleep etc. starting a child schooling at a very very young age is not good mentally because that child would grow up never knowing what motherly love is ol about, his childhood has been taken away at an early stage. from 0-2yrs is where a child gets attached more to his parents. I do nt like creche cus dey do nt have the patience to look after children.thanks

Please accept my condolence, Madam. This is indeed the most horrific experience a mum will ever experience. Yes, your Pastor did well by not allowing you seek legal action but i think the relevant authorities should be informed of this to avoid a re-occurrence there or in any other school elsewhere. These days it is through social media that such evil acts are checkmated by opening peoples eyes. And yes, all school should indeed adopt all the precautionary measures you mentioned so that parents like us will have a peace of mind when our children are at school.....kai this article has really distabilized today...

This is totally unacceptable. You can't do this on social media alone, u should sue Debiruss Creche to awareness and sound a note of warning to others and mothers who may want to use the place. The act of leaving everything like nothing happened is y dis country is in dis mess. Pls Mrs Holloway sue- not cos u want financial compensation- cos no amount can/will ever suffice but to ensure that mediocre do not go into businesses they know nothing about. That lekki axis is full of so many nonsense schools unsupervised!!! Imagine d drunk driver!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so sorry mummy for ur loss. People who are saying he is too young to be in a creche are just ignorant. But I feel u owe it as a duty to the other lil children there to sue the school, not necessary for monetary compensation, but at least the court should close it down till they have the proper infrastructure in place to run a safe creche.pls, it's ur legal duty to sue! If everyone keeps allowing things like this to happen without doing anything, they would just continue being negligent. I'm so sorry for ur loss, I have a lil boy and I can't imagine life without him. God grant u the fortitude to bear this loss.

If the economy of Nigeria was better,it would have been a different ball game entirely. Some mothers have no choice but to work to support their husbands. I made a choice to resign and be a full time housewife. But not all mothers can afford to take that decision.

Getting a maid may not be the best solution either considering the nasty experiences many have gone through. Such 'accidents' could also happen at other levels. If I decide to stay at home to take care of my kids till they get to school age,it isn't a guarantee that the child would not be a victim of an 'accident' that could claim his life at 3 or 4 years old.

You can't trust schools 100% too. We all need God's divine protection as well as wisdom to choose the right environment for our kids. She even tried, waited till he was 1 before enrolling him. Some mothers are forced to enrol their babies at 3mths or just slightly older for lack of options. I've been there before so I know what it's like. Let's not be quick to castigate mothers who send their kids to creche. It's a difficult decision to make.

So what then is the whole point of a lady getting a good education and a job only to resign because she has kids? No need for girls to go to school na,abi? So that we would stay at home and become housewives. The truth is that we can't eat our cakes and have it. Get an education and a career and leave ur child in the care of others while you're at it. Or give up the essence of all the education and be available for your family full time. Not many women would be willing to give up their careers after so many years of going through school. We can't blame them, can we?

Whatever decision a woman and her husband collectively take,we shouldn't be quick to cast stones or blame them. They know where their shoes pinch. It's unfortunate that this had to happen to her son. May his soul rest in perfect peace and may God grant her the strength to forge on in life.

Serious revamping needs to be done in our law enforcement agencies and judiciary so that schools or creches that fall short of standard are brought to book. If nothing else,to serve as deterrent to others who just would not do things right.

Why would the nanny continue feeding the baby even when he was choking? This school needs to lose their license.

As I was reading this heart rendering story, the issue of the Monster Nanny from Uganda came flashing through my mind.Indeed some of our Baby Minders at most Creche are just as Bad.Madam Please take heart. I will take it upon myself to ensure that as a matter of State Policy, all Creche in Nigeria especially Lagos must have CCTV cameras installed and a Nurse on standby.Thats the only way the death of this innocent lad will not be in vain.Bobo T pls continue to rest in Peace

What rubbish is this one saying. When u have children. Stop working ehn? So that u and ur children can be looking at each other and starve. Ppl need to put themselves in other ppls shoes before they start judging.

Oh Engr Emy I think it's only fair u lost a child so u can know how easy it is to move on. Ignorant man. This SCHOOL MUST B CLOSE. My little nephew is also Tami lore. God bless you. Mama ejime

This is why I asked the Pears Baby mother last week or so to get an autopsy. Healthy babies can die of many accidents in the day care. Choking is one of them. Falls is another one. Maltreatment is another big one. Without an autopsy, cause of death is inlaws and village people. Let us act on these issues and stop other babies from dying.

I think Mrs Holloway needs to take legal action. It is obvious the school is not sorry and don't care about the welfare of kids. All they are after is their money. Considering what you have just said, you dismissed a driver because of his drunkenness and a school employs him..being a good citizen you let them know why he was dismissed from his previous place of work, yet he is still in their employ! That is the height and they need to face the wrought of the law so that other kids won't fall prey to their carelessness

Thanks for speaking up, Linda please speak up against the ills of society, social media is so powerful.Just yesterday we heard of chocolate royal, now this ,We need sanitary inspectors in Lagos and Nigeria, they used to be there in the past ,they will go round eateries, schools, hospitals, homes, buka everywhere to check what people are actually doing. Some of these schools have one nanny per 10 kids ,how is that possible when we know how active these kids could be ;and then you hear they give them sleeping pills to make them sleep for 4 hours .We have serious issues in this country and I hope the life of THIS young kid is enough to make a change.People are tired honestly.

Cases of Rape, homicide etc are not just crime against the person it is committed but also against the state, it is a crime for u not to report such cases to the appropriate authorities. It is Ok to forgive the offender but it is wrong for you not to report. Pls Madam go and report to the police!
Sorry about ur loss, I can't imagine what u r going through. Pls if possible see a Therapist.

@M The commenter, taking care of your children and keeping them safe is not been lazy abeg, in fact it's the greatest and most challenging job. You get to save the daycare money, save the little expenses that it entails, you get to give them quality care and good moral direction and not make them independent at an early age, finally save their lives. But If you have a relative or a maid who can help, then, you can go ahead and work. But that word LAZY does not apply here okay? So think before you write. RIP little one.

You are insensitive. I guess you can't comprehend what you have read. May God help you.

Hmmm...please take heart Mrs Holloway. It is a pity that such a thing happened to you, the school is well known and has operated for about 15 years without any such incident, even schools like Greensprings, Corona etc have had similar incidents and we just pray the protection of God over our children.

What a pitiable story! May God in his infinite mercy grant the victim's mother the fortitude to bear the loss and replace this loss with something better.
A lesson for other mothers, if you can, keep your little children with yourself until they are of age to be in such public domain.
On the issue of private schools, I believe that the irresponsibility of our government in fixing the education sector gave rise to ubiquitous private schools that we find in Nigeria today. This case has caused this reaction because of the instant death that resulted. There are many with long term effects.
I am sure that it is no longer news that private school operators are out for profits and are making sure they maximize it. If you think they hire only unqualified nannies care givers, you are on a long thing. As I observed, profit maximization precipitated their hiring of substandard or unqualified personnel, whom they would pay paltry salary, as employees. Majority of them careless about the future of these wards even though they tell you otherwise in their motto to anthem and mission statement if they have any.
If you have ever worked in a private school, you wouldn't have any difficulty identifying the aforementioned except if you show indifference to excellence. From teaching to non-teaching staff a greater percentage of the employees in private schools are under-paid and are not happy doing the job. They are only there to keep body and soul together. Private school owners deceive parents about the performance of their wards by subtly enforcing teachers to give doctored reports/performance at the end of each term. The most annoying part of this is that there are a lot of unsuspecting parents who continue to pay thousands of hard-earned naira termly for the "destruction" of their child's future. Every nook and crany including buy's quatres and shops are now converted to "private schools" and you'll be shocked at the level of patronage they get. Or how do you explain the case when a JSS3 student who, at the end of last term, got good result from his Mercy private school but cannot even pass JSS1 entrance exam in a government school after relocation by his now boxed-up parents? Also, in private schools, WAEC and NECO exams are like organised class work. Invigilators are bribed to allow teachers write answers on the board for candidates to copy. The JSS3 students who sit for junior version of these xams are also not left out of this corruption. When they had done the needful, their wouldnt be any need to engage in malpractice. Many of the so called big schools are also complacent.
We hope the government including everyone of us would rise against this challenge to discourage it. They are killing the future of our learders of tomorrow. Our heart bleeds.

Mrs Holloway, I am so sorry for your Loss but we can't keep quiet. Leaving it in the hands of God doesn't mean we shouldn't be foolish. I'm deeply sorry for the loss of your adorable son. Thank you for sharing, I actually went to inquire about the creche earlier this year and to think of what had happened to your boy, the creche SHOULD be closed down and reopened after your suggestions have been implemented. Thank you again for sharing!
