Nigerian Police Force: My Ordeal - By Femi Badejo

Sometime in November, an employee of Access Bank Plc, Mr. Femi Badejo and his security guard, Joshua Moses, were shot by policemen after they responded to a distress call about a robbery at the banker’s home in the Ikota area of Lagos. (If you missed it see it HERE)

Femi is finally out of the hospital and is telling his own side of the story. See it below...
As I discussed the armed robbery incident with other occupants within our apartment complex, we noticed the gate open slightly followed by the unmistakable sounds of a war grade AK47 rifle."
At the Instant, I docked under a car in the apartment complex and noticed my security guard groaning excruciating a few meters from my location. Why did these robbers come back? Iasked rhetorically and prayed to be spared. Then as I heard the next round of shots, I felt the venom of the automatic rifle spew all over my body. So intense were the sharp burst of pains that I was on the verge of passing out when the words "Police" was heard from the shooter". A surge of deeply felt anger immediately numbed the pains from the fIve gunshot wounds - one in my feet, two in my thigh, one in my bicep and one in my wrist - as I identified myself as a tenant in the apartment complex.
Femi leaving the hospital
Why did he not identify himself earlier as required by his training? Did the words "This is the police" "Freeze" "Don't move" go on vacation in police parlance? Why will a police officer shoot an unarmed man five times under a car despite havIng his hands over his head?

My case is a bizarre one. I had been robbed by a gang of armed bandIts. Dispossessed of my valuables without been harmed only to be shot five times by a polIce officer attached to the
Ajah Police Station in Lagos state Nigeria! My name is Femi Badejo, a professional in one of
Nigeria's leading financial institution and a victim of a retrogressive, ill trained, unprofessional,
poorly clad and irresponsible Nigerian Police Force. However, I am not alone.

Scores of Innocent lives are snuffed out daily by the very institution established to secure their
lives in Nigeria. In November, a policeman shot and killed a bus conductor In the Ketu area of
Lagos State over a bus fare change of 30cents. A human rights group, International Society for
Civil Liberties and Rule of Law estimates that over 54,000 Nigerians were killed illegally from
1999 to 2011 by the Nigerian Police Force. This amounts to an act of genocide against Nigerian
by Nigerians in Nigeria!

Dreams, hopes, aspirations and goals have been brutally pierced by the bullets of a poorly
trained "vigilante" unit legally recognized as Police Officers. To further add "salt to the injuries"
of the victims' loved ones are the incessant cover ups, lies and denials by the public relations
officers in every jurisdiction where these incidents occur. My shooting was downplayed to a
gunshot with a case of mistaken identity attached to it by NgozI BraIde (PRO, NPF Lagos).
While Joshua - the security guard - was said to have been shot by the armed bandits and dead
on arrival by the police officers. Joshua who was presumed dead after he was shot by the
officer is however recuperating from the three gunshot wounds he sustained.

While it is embarrassing that the Nigerian Police Force represents the decaying fabrics of
the larger Nigerian society where politicians will rather loot billions of dollars from the central
purse than secure the lives of its citizenry. It's appalling that an institution established with the
foundatIonal principles of equity, fairness, integrity and justice is known for the opposite of these
enviable attributes with a skillset of killing the citizens they are meant to protect. Even more
appalling is the pervasive non action of the political class - which will prefer to spend billions
on frivolities such as a N2.2 billion banquet hall! - public defenders, human rights activists,
clergymen and other concerned professionals on these immoral policing anomalies! Soon there
will be no citizen to police at this rate! Are we really that helpless?

I am not. My voice will be heard the world over because this culture of impunity must stop! I
type every word on my soft touch phone screen with excruciating pains as I still have a bullet
logged in my wrist and my fingers remain numb with paddings of gauze and plasters all over
my body. I have receIved no apology from the force, I am still Incurring hospital bills running into
thousands of dollars, the Lagos State commissioner of police has refused to accept the letter
served by my lawyers A.O Fayemiwo & Co, the NPF divisions in Ajah and Maroko have also
followed the commissioner's unprofessional conduct just as the police officer who shot me has
not been brought to book.

Once again, my name is Femi Badeo, a Nigerian citizen and I represent countless individuals
that have either lost their lives or survived the brutish policing of the Nigerian Police Force
and we are fighting back! We must ask the right questions, demand the right answers and
collectively find a lasting solution to the endermic problem of brutality by officers of the Nigerian
Police Force.

With the picture of this guy showing all muscles and big biceps, i would not blame the police for mistakenly shooting him. His presence could have been intimidating to the police on scene. Remember that there was a report of armed robbery in the area and the poorly equipped police responded only to be met by a big muscled fiercely bull-dog looking fellow who was probably scared because he has just been robbed.
What do you expect. Of course the ill trained and poorly equipped police will shoot to at least incapacitate first before asking any questions.I would probably have done the same if i was the poorly trained policeman on the ground that day.[i beg, i no wan die yet]. At least the police responded. We should be happy. The shooting was a mistake that could have been avoided. It was not intentional.

You probably looked suspicious to the police that stopped u on your street. This is a normal procedure in policing. Even in USA, if u looked or drive suspiciously to the the police, the police will stop you and ask you questions. If you are caught with weeds, you will be going nowhere but jail. Dont blame the police for doing their job.

PLEASE, LET US ALL SIT BACK, TAKE A BREATH FOR A SECOND AND THINK INSTEAD OF JUST SITTING IN FRONT OF COMPUTERS AND SPEWING NONSENSE ABOUT OUR MEN WHO ARE RISKING THEIR LIFE AS POLICE OFFICERS..
THE GOOD AND HARD WORKING MEN IN OUR POLICE FORCE ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. THE SYSTEM THEY ARE OPERATING IS THE PROBLEM. IF WE CARRY THE SYSTEM OUR POLICE ARE OPERATING TO AMERICA OR UK, THE POLICEMEN OVER THERE WILL PERFORM WORSE THAN OUR POLICEMEN EVER HERE.
WE MUST ALL FIGHT TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM. IF ALL THE PEOPLE SPEWING RUBBISH HERE ARE EMPLOYED AS OUR POLICE OFFICERS, THEY WILL PERFORM WORSE THAN OUR PRESENT POLICE OFFICERS.[OUR ONCE-SHOELESS PRESIDENT IS AN EXAMPLE].
99.9% OF US ARE MORBIDLY CORRUPT. CORRUPTION RUNS DEEP IN OUR GENES. THERE IS NO NIGERIAN LEADER OR RULER WHO HAS NEVER EMBEZZLED. THEY ARE THE SAME.THEY ARE ALL ROGUES. THEY ALL PART OF OUR ECO-SYSTEM. CORRUPTION IS PART AND PARCEL OF OUR ECOSYSTEM.
THE ONLY WAY TO CHANGE THINGS IN NIGERIA IS TO START FROM BOTTOM AND GO UP FIGHTING.IT IS A FACT THAT WE ARE ALL CORRUPT.
Ngozi braide IS NOT THE PROBLEM. THE SYSTEM SHE IS OPERATING IS THE PROBLEM. PLEASE GIVE RESPECT AND HONOUR TO HER AND OTHER MEMBERS OF OUR POLICE FORCE. DONT GET ME WRONG, I AM NOT SAYING THAT THAT OUR POLICE FORCE IS A PERFECT FORCE. THERE IS CORRUPTION EVERY WHERE, EVEN IN USA. IN USA, THEY RIGGED ELECTIONS TOO. THEY USED A SYSTEM CALLED VOTERS SUPPRESSION. VOTERS SUPPRESSION IS ONE FORM OF RIGGING ELECTIONS. IN FACT, IT IS THE WORSE FORM. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY RNC WINS ELECTION IN USA. IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH INSTEAD OF SITTING IN FRONT OF MACS AND SPEWING GARBAGE.
PLEASE RESPECT OUR POLICE MEN AND WOMEN. THE GAME IS FAULTY NOT THE PLAYERS. IT IS ONLY MARCHING ON ASO ROCK/SENATE/NATIONAL ASSEMBLY THAT CAN SOLVE ALL THESE PROBLEMS. WE ALL NEED TO COME TOGETHER IN RESPECTIVE OF ETHNICITY TO FIGHT FOR OURSELVES AND OUR LOVED ONES.
WE HAVE BEEN CARRYING 'SHIT' FOR OUR NON-ELECTED[COUP PLOTTERS] AND ELECTED LEADERS FOR A LONG TIME AND ME, I AM TIRED OF CARRYING 'SHIT' FOR THEM. ALL OF THEM ARE FLYING AROUND IN PERSONAL JETS AFTER LIQUIDATING OUR NIGERIA AIRWAYS WHICH IS MEANT FOR THE COMMON NIGERIANS WHO CANT AFFORD THE COST OF FOREIGN AIRLINES.I AM READY FOR THE FIGHT. The mere fact that someone is on the floor with his one hand on his head does not mean he does not posed as a threat. Do you know what the other hand is holding. You were not on scene with your life at risk so you cannot be speaking on what those police men should have done or should not have done.
You should remember there was a report that armed robbers were operating there. That was why the police showed up. At least be happy that they showed up. The shooting of an innocent man was a pure unintended accident. If there was a video of what happened , then one will be in a better position to judge. Please be careful when judging others. Our policemen are working days and nights with barely nothing to confront fellow Nigerians like you who decided that crime pays. At least show some respect to these police officers. If you are not happy with what they are doing, you are welcome to join as long as you are fit enough and ready to live with the peanuts as salary.

Sorry to hear about your friends that were 'mistakenly' arrested and asked to pay bribe before they could be released.
Even in USA and UK, innocent people do get arrested mistakenly and charged to court for offenses that they do not commit. In fact they are cases of people doing jail time in USA and later on to be exonerated by DNA tests. Please dont blame the Nigeria police for this because they dont know that your friends were innocent. The police did the right thing by arresting your friends who looked suspicious and could be carrying weapons like knives on them as we dont even know the full story.Your friends should have asked for a lawyer if they surely know that they are not armed robbers. I am sure they will get a lawyer for less than what they paid as bribe. And if they didn't have money, they should have asked for a public defender. By paying bribes to get released, they just committed another crime. Please stop attacking our policemen like this. The policemen are doing their jobs. Who needs suspicious people walking the streets aimlessly at night carrying God-knows and here you are sitting in front of your mac/computer and you expect the policemen not to act? Please i beg talk something else.

Olu. said...

To Clarividente

I am not craving for attention. I dont need it. What i dont like is ungrateful Nigerians like you blaming our policemen and women all the time when Nigerians like you are the one committing the crime and enticing these policemen with bribes. Aliens are not the one committing the crime or are they?
The policemen are not putting gun to your head asking for bribes. That will be considered armed robbery. It is Nigerians like you who will go and commit crime and start enticing a lowly and poorly paid policeman with bribe and now turn around to be complaining. The policemen are not bribing themselves or are they?
STOP OFFERING BRIBE TO THE POLICE.If you do, you are liable. Period.

Anonymous said...

Will you shut your dirty mouth! Listen to the rubbish you are saying, we should be thankful they showed up! Isn't that their job and what is the essence of them showing up, even the robbers didn't shoot the man and he and his security man were better off till the bastard policemen came. As for the Ngozi woman, what is there to respect about a liar and a witch. Even if it was a mistake why not apologise and pay his hospital bills like decent people. Instead the stupid woman is ignoring the issue and lying and they even had the guts to refuse the letters they were served! The police force is full of bastards and each of them that has even threatened and assulted an innocent citizen will suffer for their sins. Their ends will be terrible, so if you or your family member belongs to that evil force you better know that the blood of innocent people will keep crying against you. Nigerian policemen are worse than animals!

Anonymous said...

You're a big fool! They are doing their jobs by asking for bribes right? It seems collecting bribes is officially part of their duty. By the way in the USA or UK, the right thing would have been for the police officer to talk to him and upon discovering that he had no weapons on him, they would have had to let him go. Its against a person's human rights to be arrested just because someone thinks they look suspicious. There is a thing called freedom of movement which the stupid police officers we have in this country do not realise. You can't just drive around arresting people for looking suspicious!

Anonymous said...

We should respect that stupid Ngozi woman who is a common liar! She is a mannerless idiot who dosen't realise that she's there to serve the citizens and is answerable to us! She will surely suffer all these things she keeps covering up. If she wants respect she should do the honourable thing by exposing the guilty officers and letting us know that they will be charged. Instead that stupid woman keeps telling 1 lie after the other. God will surely punish her!

If somebody is kidnapped in Nigeria today, is it not our police officers that will be risking their lives looking for the person? If armed robbers attacked una, no be our brothers in the police you na go call? So why all these hatred towards all our men in uniform just because of a few bad police officers? The policemen were not on scene that day to shoot any innocent person. What happened was a mistake. Can't you people get that. If you have been poorly treated by a doctor, does that mean all doctors are now guilty? Why hate all policemen just because you have been wrongly treated by a few policemen. You all need to change your attitude towards our police officers. Do you people know how many police officers that have met their untimely death just because they were trying to protect us from our fellow Nigerians who are armed robbers? We all need to sit down in a corner and think about all these instead of hating on these policemen. We should direct our angers towards the right place which is Aso rock instead of sitting in front of our computers and hating on policemen. Our problems are our leaders. We need to direct our annoyance towards them. If you all want to continue hating and disrespecting our men in uniform, 'goodluck' to una. Maybe una belong to people that grew up without shoes and now that una have shoes Boku, una no fit think properly again. I REST MY CASE HERE. I am tired trying to convince una to give our policemen the respect they deserve.

Olu did you just write "stop giving bribe to the police?" How many bus conductors and okada riders have been killed because of refusing to give your fellow men N20? I'm sure you work with the NPF that's why you are here defending their mediocrity and total failure.. What if Femi had died? Would they have said they thought he was a robber? its just so sad what the NPF has become, such much decay in the system, half baked drunk men wielding guns on the streets and shooting harmless citizens for pleasure. Most of them reek of alcohol even very early in the morning, its a sorry state.
Mr. Olu watch what you say, it could have been you, your brother, father, sister or anyone close to you...
