Dear LIB readers; I stopped using soap and now my V smells bad

A few weeks back, I shared a post from a gynecologist who advised women not to wash their vagina with soap. (Find it HERE). Well, we have feedback from a LIBer who tried the method...and she's not very pleased...:-). See it below...
OMG! I'm really hurting. Ladies remember what Linda taught us on this blog about not washing our vaginal with soap! A new guy I'm seeing and really crazy about called me some days ago that I should see a doctor because my vagina really smells bad. Never been this embarrassed in my whole life. So I'm going back to my soap scrubbing. Please ladies, soap scrub your V.
Haha! In all sincerity, though a lot of comments supported the idea of washing the vagina with just clean hands and warm water, I have never tried it. I just don't use as much soap as I used to...but not use soap at all? Hmm, hmmm, hmmmm! Anyone else with an unhappy lover? :-)

Its esential to wash the sides of the labia and surroundings with a mild soap. DO NOT insert ur finger into ur V-hole to wash. that's douching and is very wrong.

Kare said...

The vagina is a very sensitive part in a woman's body. The problem of odours arise mainly because of infections both regular types(yeast infections caused by d overgrowth of candida) or STI's. However what people should know is that the vulva area which surrounds the vagina should and can be washed with mild soap while the vagina itself(opening) should be cleansed with ONLY water. Every woman has discharges and this is a way the vagina self cleanses which means ur vagina is not supposed to smell flowery or perfumed but have a unique musky scent, So biko my fellow readers do not douche ur vagina.

Anonymous said...

My dear , you dont have any problem. Blood generally smells. Like someone alrdy said, try changing your pad often and also try to rinse out with water before any change of pad (depending on where you are oh) to reduce the odour that emanates from there. Also there are some pads that mask the odour of blood when you are flowing. You can try some of them. Thata way you will feel ok. Goodluck

If Sanex is not sold in Nigeria then get someone to send it to her from the UK.

I meant the Sanex Zero range. This woman woud thank me for this information. Women who react to soap use Sanex Zero.

Nigeria is behind as a deveoping country. If you also have body odour use any of the Sanex liquid soaps.

SANEX all the way...

It removes the odour that ordinary soaps cannot remove. Please call me a liar if you cannot smell any improvement in your life ASAP.

She should just go 4 medical check up...d use of soap was covering d small. She needs 2 be more hygienic, wash regularly without hash soap and use air friendly panties.
My ex gf's vegaygay smells and I don't go down on her simple...but my fiance nd boo dat we've been dating for 6yrs nw who is very clean and uses only water. Its like heaven for both of us cos it doesn't smell nd I take her places wen I'm feasting on her veegaygay 'wink'. So if u want d experience 4rm ur bf wash wif only water regularly and nd change often. Have missed all dat nw cos we are nw born again.

DOCTOR HERE: This LIB reader that says she stopped using soap and it started smelling; is she sure her bf didn't just bring home an infection because it is true that the vagina doesn't need soap at all. You just need little dettol in your water when having your bath; in case the water is not from a good source; cos dats wen u can get an infection. It is probably a coincidence that she stopped using soap at the same time she just got an infection. She shd go see the gynae Dr

TB said...

EXTRA---And all these men fingering their ladies with their dirty hands are the ones causing problems. Try to keep ur hands relatively clean @ all times so that u won't give ur woman a serious infection; u may not know- even if d vagina is self cleaning and has its normal flora dt helps tackle bacteria from time to time u shdnt put in there what it cannot handle. Pls pls pls do not put soap into the vagina; just use dettol in ur bathing water. Wash externally only! No need to douche d thang biko

Chei. this my generation God!!! see topic!!! amidst global recession, starvation, hunger, bad road na toto remain to talk about. i'm disappointed in my generation. we have lost focus. pls money stinks too. use soap!! mumu people

Anonymous said...

Olodo! Vagina is self cleaning. It is the external area that needs cleaning. Not inside. Stop fingering urself ; it can clean itself.

Mschewww u r even a guy sef! U wldnt know anyfn. Only male Drs wd know

Anonymous said...

Did u say roasted fish???? Bbz u probably have bacterial vaginosis... Water won't work for you because you are masking the real problem with scented soaps

Anonymous said...

She probably has an STI or yeast infection. See a doctor asap! You should absolutely not wash your vajayjay with soap. Educate yourselves please.. Then again this might be a made up story to garner views/comments. LMAO

Anonymous said...

What the heck is "vaginal"??? SMH

Anonymous said...

This story just highlights the lack of sexual health awareness in Nigeria, we must do better!!!

Anonymous said...

@FIKKI- LMAO! I was beginning to question my ability to spell 'vagina' there for a moment, gosh!

Anonymous said...

The level of ignorance on this story is quite worrying! it is clear that a lot of ladies are decidedly under educated when it comes to sexual health awareness.

Someone mentioned pharmaceutical companies having different feminine washes on the market.. so what? it doesn't mean that the washes should be bought + be used to clean down there, they have to make money somehow these pharmas, don't they? and they'll be only too pleased with sheep who don't take the time to educate themselves on correct hygiene methods and just buy whatever they see on the market. (A clear case of consumerism there, but I digress)

The best proven cleansing regimen is warm water and clean hands as a few people have mentioned! I have done this from my teenage years and had no issues whatsoever.. I'm in my 30s now! See a doctor for any abnormal odours down there, it is clearly an infection!
I must add that there is ABSOLUTELY no need to wash the vagina (the 'inside bit', in layman's terms)as it is self-cleansing. Good luck to you!

Its amazing the level of ignorance displayed on blogs like this. Its the 21st century and am very sure for all of us to have access to LINDA IKEJI'S BLOG we must have come across so many seach engines e.g Google, Ask etc. The internet is there for you to use and lots of people get schooled on this same internet. So when some of us come here and display our level of ignorance it makes me cringe, linda you inclusive. You post stuffs daily on your blog, don't you do research? Well I guess not cos most of the stuffs you put of have the typo from the original source and since you don't bother to do your own research or thoroughly read through you end up posting blunders. Like someone earlier said you represent Nigerian women all over the world, you are a role model, so please lead by example. And FYI soap is BAD for your vagina! I said it before, you can put a little bit of original olive oil (just oil a finger) and rub it in anytime you wash, its natural and for those who have sought the OB-GYN and still have smell down there. And it also helps lubricate naturally dry vags (Google the benefits of olive oil). Note: as per personal hygiene, when you pee wash with and TOWEL DRY, not tissue unless you don't have immediate access to a towel. Linda please post even if you find my referring to you not ok or whatever, this post can help one or two people. Bottom line is since we all have internet access to be an LIB we can go that extra mile to GOOGLE. Jennifer

after reading all the comments I felt I seriously needed to say something.

In my university days I used to itch/ have white discharges but no smell a lot down there. I didnt know the cause then.... it went on for a while, when i couldnt take it anymore I saw a gynecologist. He told me I was having frequent case of Thrush ( yeast infection) and i needed to stop using soap and to use only water. I didnt listen kept on washing everyday. The itching came back ( i started doing self medication cos i already knew wha he prescribed the first time i went to the hospital- mycoten vaginal tablets).
I kept on battling with yeast infection back to back, it almost drove me crazy. then i noticed it usually happened a few days to my period. i kept on using mycoten.
like two months back, during my period I started noticing very embarrassing fish like odour, i was mad, odour ke, lati bo? i initially thought it was one of those funny moments and it would go on its own It didnt. went to the hospital where I got to know I had bacteria vaginosis. was treated with flagyl it went. Now i take whatever my Doctor says seriously I use water only ( I only use my intimate wash like once a week) and i do not smell at all.
so if you have fouls smell down there pls go see a doctor you ve got infections.

washing with soap strips u off friendly bacteria which alters the ph level then u start having thrush....then when u start treating thrush, the over use of anti fungal will cause you to have bacteria vaginosis and the treatment cycle goes on and on

dont use soap
wear cotton panties
sleep without panties on at night
maintain good hygene
and you will be fine.

a lot of people are infection carriers and they do not even know get tested today.

MY TURN said...

Look i am trained in this field. Women should desist from using anything with a fragrance down there. NOT SOAP, NOT FEMININE WASH NOT DOUCHE NOTHING. The natural secretion lubricates your vagina and water alone should be used to wash your vagina. AVOID future issues DON NOT USE SOAP O IT WILL ITCH AND EVENTUALLY STINK. A WORD IS ENOUGH FOR THE WISE.

Anonymous said...

I can't understand why you women will come out and say, don't use soap on you vagina; use only water. If you used no soap on your body and just water, your body would stink like hell. I don't care what kind of super, special liquid gets secreted from your vagina (Christ, it sounds awful just writing it), you gotta wash it.

There must be some special soap out there for it. Seriously. How can you not wash your bloody vagina. Oh, God. I swear if I was with a woman and her vagina stunk, I'd avoid sex for 8 months, man. I'd become a monk. For fuck's sake. You're supposed to be women. You're supposed to be super clean.

Chucks

Using soap is a NO, No, i haven't for as long as i can remember and my V doesn't smell awful. U probably have an infection, get to the lab to treat. Honestly ladies dont need soap, water is all u need. I am married with children.

Anonymous said...

You can use feminine wash in the place of soap. You've been adviced on the use of soap because most soap cause infections after a period of time. And don't push your finger deep when you are wash your vagina.

Anonymous said...

For me, I go stick my finger inside and take style smell it. If it smells, chikena. I go wash my hands with soap nd water 'nd finally with alcohol.

Ha this one no be small matter oooh,,ok make i chip in my 50c. Like someone said here,,different strokes for different folks,,,what can i say? There is no way ,,i would stay without my Femfresh intimate wash and spray. After using it during shower, I put a lil spray on my pants. This keeps me fresh all day. Please make sure u wash often but if u want to wash after pooing ,,wipe out the poop using toilet tissues before washing. I'm a Mom but still haven't found a way of making poop my friend lol, don't like touching it!Times have change, i'm not sure my GrandMa had this worry. Men love to spend time down there so it is of our best interest ladies to keep it clean. Don't let him go smell a fresh n clean pussy out there n leave u for another. Keep ur Man, have a clean Pussy lol! Have a great new week!

anyway as for me i dont wash with any soap and mine does not smell,is either you have infection or that you dont wash it very well.

You could also use salt with water to wash,it acts as anti bacteria

SO MANY BAD ADVISERS.... ITS BETTER TO USE A LIITLE OF MILD SOAP LIKE DOVE TO WASH THE VAGINA, NO DOUCHING... DOUCHING MEANS INSERTING THE FINGERS INTO VAGINA TO WASH IT... DOUCHING WOULD MAKE THE VAGINA SMELL, REASON BEING THAT BY WASHING THAT WAY, IT WOULD KILL THE BACTERIA THAT HELPS FIGHT ODOUR IN THE VAGINA... NATURALLY, THERE ARE BACTERIA IN THE VAGINA THAT HELPS FIGHT ODOUR... SO ALL U NEED DO IS WASH THE OUTER PART OF UR VIGINA AND A LITTLE OF THE PINKY PART WITH MILD SOAP LIKE DOVE SOAP. AVOID WEARING SILK PANT, COTTON PANTIES IS THE BEST FOR THE VAGINA.... AND PLS LET UR VAGINA GET FRESH AIR AT NIGHT WHILE U ASLEEP, THATS TO SAY DONT WEAR PANTIES AT NIGHT WHILE SLEEPING. AND ALSO MAKE SURE U WASH UR VAGINA IMMEDIATELY AFTER SEX BCOS UR CUM AND THAT OF UR PARTNER CAN SMELL AWFULLY IF LEFT FOR SOME TIME.

U CAN JUST WASH UR VAGINA WITH WATER WITHOUT APPLYING SOUP.... 'COVERS MY NOSE', WHOEVA THOT U THAT... ITS JUST LIKE WASHING UR CLOTHES WITHOUT SOAP...

the vagina is a cul-de-sac( a dead end) ur food has nothing to do with the smell of your vagina.
a fishy smell is a definite sign of an infection and u definitely need to se a doctor.
a woman should not douche i.e. wash the inside of her vagina with soap, it washes off the protection in d hole.
if after treatment you have a recurrent smelly, dirty discharge your partner needs to be treated

DO NOT USE SOAP TO WASH YOUR VURGINA ITS NOT GOOD EVEN THE BODY HAS ITS OWN PROTECTIVE BACTERIA IF YOU USE SOAP YOU LOWER YOUR BODIES IMMUNITY.
GETTING INFECTIONS WILL BE EASY DRINK A LOT OF WATER AND YOGURAT ITS GOOD.

As human beings, our bodies are different and we react differently to different things. For me i don't even advice anyone to use fem fresh or summer eve. The vagina reacts to perfume scented soap. If u most use soap, use a soap that has no perfume at all or maybe baby soap. I know that most ladies like to feel fresh down there but just use very mild soap with no perfume and you will be free from infections, but first of all go and do a swap test to be sure your not having any infections now. Love you all.

Wash around your vagina but never put your finger inside to clean it out, much less inserting chemical solutions which the soap is made of inside your vagina. But you can wash around the vagina with either soap or feminine wash as long as you don't insert into.

Hmmmmmm! ok babes seriously we all know by now that soap is bad for the V, however that place needs to be freshened up often cos of sweat and bacteria and lack of air etc etc My advice, make fem fresh wash ur bestie and stay away from sprays vag perfs etc as those unbalance the ph levels which lead to infections plus always sleep 'commando' so that air can circulate the area biko. Oh and no take dat place play o, always run to ur gynae as soon as any discomfort sets in cos untreated tinz dey lead to infertility. I no fit shout.Sent from my brand new android device hehehe...

i was not paid to advertise this. But the mildest soap ever i have encountered is Dove. it simply does it. and seriously if u have Vaginal smell u should Puuuulease visit a Physician or better still so to a Lab and Simply do a Vaginal Swab Test and Urine test. This two very important tests would determine the kind of Bacteria that it causing the Odour more like and determine the drug to take that would clear such. But a very important reminder is during the treatment it recommended that you do not engage in any form of coitus/Intercourse and make sure your sleeping or sex partner also goes through such treatment else you would be reinfected 'causing all the process be futile or useless. because its easier for him to Quickly say "your vajayjay is Smelling". So please lets Help our selves mn...

ow elm and did i forget to mention. Please take in a whole lotta Cranberry Juice it flushes out the Bacteria so they dont cling to the Vajayjay.

This is amazing. There are many things here been said that shows how ignorant many women are about their body. The vagina on its own has a scent in which in itself acts as an aphrodisiac to men due to its musky smell. Don't you know that you can affect the way your vagina scent smells based on what you eat? How much water do you drink in a day? You may have your bath a hundred times in a day but it is not as effective as what goes into the body. how is your sex life? Do you sleep around? does your partner sleep around? how many people actually ask these questions to understand why their bodies react the way they do? Its simple logic. and the most disappointing part is that if you can leave a comment here, then it means you have access to google and so many site that will give you correct information on how to take care of your body even after a visit to your gyn. Please Linda, if your blog is only about letting ignorance prevail, then pull it down. Or do something with a whole lot of research to boost the image and self confidence of ladies that read and follow you. its embarrassing when you see a blog that has a reach such as yours allows the image of women to be torn down just because you want traffic and comments.

Well technically, you just have to be really meticulous about it. You have to keep the area well shaved (think Brazilian) because hair harbors bacteria and odor. Also, you have to clean it every time you use the ladies room (number 1 and 2) so try and always have baby wipes handy. I personally go for Summer's Eve feminine wash, i never allow soap to touch my vag itself, but i use soap all around and use Summer's Eve (PH balancing for sensitive skin) morning and night...works for me...Maybe ill try the water only method, not today though. Also spray body splash (Victoria's Secret, Bath & Body Works) lightly between your thighs, on your groin and above your pubic area, don't let it touch your vag. Good luck

Aqueous cream is better than anything in the world, try it and u won't regret it. It's prescribed by d doctor in London, all the fem washes are a waste of money n eventually causes thrush.
