Must see video! Governor Adams Oshiomhole humiliates and orders arrest of Task Force boss

On Monday Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state ran to the scene of a demolition exercise in Benin city. The governor visited the site to see how some controversial demolition was executed by the state Task Force on Demolition of illegal Properties.

Apparently angered by some demolitions that he claimed was mischievously done by the team, Mr. Oshiomhole publicly scolded Major Lawrence Loye (rtd), the task force chair.

As shown in this video, Governor Oshiomhole not only scolded the task force chair but also ordered his arrest.

Is this gross abuse of power or was the Governor right to arrest the task force boss?

This is so controversial. The man should have quickly said where he got his authorisation from but was not forth coming showing he was dodgy. On the other hand, the governor should have SHOWED enough evidence to order his arrest. The governor must know more about this man than we know. However in this case, Oshiomole acted more like the govinator than the governor.

This is very cruel of Oshiomole, i think he also has the right to tell his officers to handle the man with care, i do not like the handling of the zaelous hypocritical officers. the man should be charged but not assualted with forceful arrest

Handled very badly... SMH.

This whole set up is a fucking plan and they all planned it out. the guy in question is a solider trust me he will be released that same day

I am surprised by the comments stated here so far. Estimated at least: 50 lives were affected by the demolition, what happened to those people?. And he was asked: who gave you the authority to demolish.. He didn't say.. and so he had to be handed to the police for proper investigation and prosecution. What I do not appreciate is the Governor's comment, jumping to conclusion..that's dangerous.

Na wa o!!..Power sure corrupts..just because the plot belongs to the former Head Honcho Ogbemudia..probs his political Godfather...
Guess he forgot to tell his Task Boss that some animals are more equal than others!!..shameless!!

This is one of the Most Silly and Embarrassing act i have watched on TV done by any Governor of a state.

Oshiomole really disappointed me by that show off act that only stupefies Him.

By all indication you will know its all a setup to take the man down, can you imagine the unkind statement coming out from Him to the man? If He wasn't experienced or knowledgeable then why give him the job in the first place, If He's been filling his cup with some evil acts why wait until his so called cup got so full before taking him down, and why the embarrassing display of shame by those unprofessional security officers he has working with him in such a shameful act against the man Who is a Retired Major who served the nation and took off his crown in the service in retirement but publicly humiliated by the Governor and his security thugs and partners in shame.

Wrong acts should be punished but what i watched on tv was completely out of it and a real act of shame on the governors side. If am to be in the man's shoe i will be ringing someone like Festus Keyamo for a Multi-million naira lawsuit against them cause i presume they really don't know the law.

This may have been a stitch-up.

If it was not a set-up, then I support the governor 100%.

Does a governor udually attend demotion of illegal structures?

Is election around the corner?

Maybe this was the governor's "special tactics" to win over that community. Maybe.

Maybe someone stitched up the retired military man to bang his head against the crocodile head of the governor?

How come the givernir was quick to talk about the military guy as if he reharsed his speech?

How come the governor was full of anger without waiting for full facts or investigated the matter before jumping to irrational conclusion and arresting the man?

The more I think of it, the more I suspect stitch-up and abuse of power and position. This matter should be independently investigated and if the governor stitched that man up, then the governor should be throw out of office and locked up in a zoo with sex starved male gorillas.

The whole thing stints of foul / power play.

For now, the governor won. If it was a stitch-up, then, the military guy should patiently wait till the governor is out of office, then get his own back - get the governor's daughter or wife pregnant, then go AWOL.

issuing an arrest is not the issue here it is the manner in which he was arrested and this is why the white man still thinks us to be backward...i mean an arrest did not have to be so violent and misconstruing. they portrayed the man as a criminal even if he did wrong, they could have been civilised about the arrest. jesus christ! whatever happened to human rights!

eazzie E said...

ordering an arrest is not the issue here. what matters is the way in which he was arrested. It is for reasons like this that the white man still considers africans to be backward. the arrest was so misconstruing and the man was portrayed as a criminal. what ever happened to human rights? God have mercy on my very confused country Nigeria.

Well the governor who came to the scene must have hard some information about the unbecoming attitude of this so call task force. You need to see the humiliation that is being melted out to these property owners by these task force people. sometimes they collect bribe from them & still destroy their properties. in this regard now, he has destroyed ssomeone property without having authority to do so. The humiliation you claim he got from the governor is not in any way compared withy the pain he has inflicted on the person he destroyed his property. that is good for him. but i must confess, the governor did over reacted. All the same i love the scene.

I wish this "Osi...omho...ole" of a guy is equally disgraced publicly for looting the treasury of his state.

SHAME ON YOU ADAMS OSHIOMOLE!!! 2 wrongs don't make a right. What ever happened to a 'stop work order', 'query' and 'investigation'. Shit was so staged bt a major PR blunder on the governors part. I hope the task force boss sues the state's ass wella

Dlapikin said...

I think it is abusive. There should have been an administrative suspension, an investigation and then if there are any evidence of frauds, bribes or abuse of power, the governor should have let the justice follow its course.

The action of Governor Oshiomhole was a disgrace to democracy. I actually thought the Governor with all his experience in NLC would have known how to legally handle issues. The same Governor would have been one of the leading critics if that action was taken by some other person. What transpired was a shame. Really disappointed with the Governor. He should also await his own public shame. Disgusting.

rough handling, but very decisive action (sends a strong msg). If u're going to destroy some1's building u might as well get authorization. D guy wasn't forth coming most likely bcos he acted over-zealously or was trying to protect some1 else. We've had enof in Nija, uniform wearing fellows rape d law everyday by using their powers outside d constitution; search cars without warrant, stop and question pedestrians 4 no cause etc. They need to know that constituted authority doesn't accommodate such stuff. Abt d arrest, if some1 is caught breakin d law and d police is on scene, d person gets arrestd (no contest), same here, nobody said d case won't be investigated (altho I sense, some hidden grudge)

lets call a spade a spade this is an over kill, you don't publicly disgrace a major this way unless he isn't a proper force major.how will foreigners respect our forces if a whole major can be handcuffed and thrown in the back of a pick up for what??
doing the job he was paid to do.the worst he should have done was a dress down and a warning and perhaps gotten the major to offset the costs for the repair of the fence
oshiomole is just playing to the gallery and using the man as a scape goat unless he has some prior beef with the man judging by his comments that the man's cup is full

@ Prof Which kind Prof are you. So if it is your Fathers house that was demolished illegally am sure you will shoot that task force Boss. Someone's property is demolished by a callous Major and you are talking about how you did not like how he was handled. You are having pity for his being assulted but you are not having any pity for those he has rendered homeless.. As much as a Governor has the power to grant pardon to someone who was sentenced to death he also weilds the power to order an arrest and detention of a person who has abused the law.

this is nothing but a gross abuse and show of power by the governor OSHIOMHOLE...ideally, the illegal demolition by the task force should have been investigated by the state goverment and the chairman or whoever authorised the demolition be disciplined...discipline can then take the form of arrest for criminal damage or dismisal from service...the owners of the demolished properties can then sue the task force in a civil court for acting inappropriately

Anonymous said...

Oshiomole is a good governor and i give him credits for that, he took the right step to ensure just justice of the people. People can say a lot of Rubbish...

Anonymous said...

Well the governor has the right to institute an arrest on any public officer who goes on rampage like that of TFB. However it's also right that such should be handled with some level of professionalism... Please watch how 2 to 3 SA had to struggle to handcuff one person who did not resist arrest..Again someone should train our law enforcing officer!! Do you have to jack the TFB by the trouser to prove agility? its not professional from the governors security aids.

Beliv me the governor knows better than all of us...what the major did directly or indirectly effects the rule of the incumbent governor and if not handled like it was, might turn the public against the government..the major, who knows, might be sent by some people to cause confusion in governor Adams regime....it's more political that we see it.

I can't imagine the kind of senseless comments I am reading here. I think some people are just ignorant! It is high time Linda started screening comments here.

One thing we all need to understand is that somebody must be responsible for anything that happens in a state. That is the problem with Nigeria, and some directionless young people who leave comments on this blog. In developed countries, people are usually held responsible for their miscalculations even if it was done in everyone's best interest.

Is anybody thinking about the people who will be rendered homeless because some task force officials acted irrationally? Who will be responsible for the structure pulled down by a so-called task force leader who doesn't have authority to carry out the act?

Do you want the governor who cares about the displaced people to give the dare-devil task force commander a golden handshake (for a job well done)? We need to start examining issues objectively.

Some years ago Gov. Rotimi Amaechi ordered the arrest of a Council Chairman who was driving on the wrong side of an expressway. Was he criticized for his action? No. We need to start checking the excesses of these task force officers, especially when they don't have the authority to carry out their actions.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what I see in the vid. The governor ordered the arrest of a man who without authorization demolished the homes of people who work and make a living from these buildings. The arrest is just the signature way of how an arrest is done in Nigeria. You cannot blame the governor for the way the man was arrested because the gov does not have the authority to instruct the cops how to do their job. Alot of times in Nigeria, we tend to miss the point when we yap about abuse of human rights and power forgetting that the people you tend to want to protect by being so civil are very far from civility.

tope said...

How is it possible that the govenor can arrest a man without a warrant and any evidence, that is simply an abuse of his human rights. Enough evidence should have been gathered then an arrest warrant issued on all those found wanting. The immunity granted govenors should be scrapped and Oshiomole himself should be charged with abuse of power and unlawful arrest.

Hmmm... who appointed the Task Force Chairman? Wasn't it Oshiomole that appointed him? Na wa o. This, IMO, is a gross abuse of power. Even if the Major was in the wrong, he could have handled the matter better. It was enough that he publicly scolded him but that public arrest and handcuffing business was uncalled for.

This is the result of poor governance and miss communication. before any demolition is done, the Gov should approve of it. Whether he did or not, is the question. Chaos and drama in Nigeria will never seize.

WHY WE HANDCUFFED TASK FORCE BOSS LOYE, BY OSHIOMOLE

GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State yesterday said he took the drastic discplinary action he took against the Chairman of the state’s Task Force on the Environment, Major Lawrence Loye (rtd), to send a signal to the world that his administration is people-driven and has no room for autocratic tendencies. Oshiomhole fielded questions from journalists at the VIP Lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, yesterday, shortly after he arrived from a foreign trip with the former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Loye was handcuffed after the governor ordered his arrest over illegal demilotion of some structures in the capital, Benin.
The governor said he had to order that Loye be handcuffed to send a warning to others who might be nursing such autocratic and anti-people acts.

He said, “I think that is just the issue. We are about the people, we are not about godfathers. We are people-driven. We have to find courage to do what we have to do in order to safeguard public interest. Sometimes you have to deal with a guy, no matter how powerful he is, so that those who are powerless can be safe.

“But, that does not mean you should be indiscriminate. You don’t go because you have a little responsibility and you take more for yourself and start to do what is patently illegal and unjust. Somebody carried a bulldozer to your house and his only reason is that he’s the

chairman of a task force, and he begins to destroy your house. What will you do? I think the man just went beyond his brief, because democracy is not just about the voting day, but about accountability. It is also about accounting for the decisions you make and the policy that you pursue.”

Oshiomhole explained further: “We decided that in order to have safety of our people, those who build houses on the moat we have to have them removed. Over the years, people who were powerful, just like a typical Nigerian, they can even build on the highway because of the simple reason that they are big men. So, we decided that no matter who you are, if you build on the moat, we will remove it. If you build on the right of way, it will be removed. It does not matter who you are. We have removed illegal structures and we will continue to do so, be-cause that is the reason we seek power so that we can use it to do great things for the greatest number of people, even if it means having to take tough de-cisions against some few people.

“The rules are clear. We have the Ministry of Land and Sur-vey. We have the Ministry of Environment. Between the two, they determine what con-stitutes an obstruction to the right of way under the law of Edo State and town planning bye-laws; and for the Minis-try of Environment, they de-termine what offends the nor-mal natural ways.”

He promised that those af-fected by the illegal action of the erring task force chairman would be compensated.

“He took a decision he doesn’t have the competence or the train-ing to take, and so we had to do what we did because if you see the buildings he brought down, four solid new block of flats. He pulled them down just for noth-ing. And he has done that a couple of times. A couple of times he has gone to drive away market women in order to create space for the other person and we had to pay com-pensation for them, and we have warned him several times not to take such decisions,” he added.

This is so wrong. Inasmuch as I do not know if the demolition of the property was legal or not, it was wrong for the governor to openly scold the head of the task force. Another question is this. Does the governor have the constitutional right to order the arrest of someone? And should the arrested be humiliated in such a way. I weep for my country. The governor did reaally disappoint in this case.
