After a Fox News interview held last night where Donald Trump Jr admitted to meeting Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, President Trump took to Twitter this morning to tweet his support for his son.
He wrote: "My son Donald did a good job
last night. He was open, transparent and innocent. This is the greatest
Witch Hunt in political history. Sad!"
Soon after, he followed up with another tweet, writing: "Remember, when you hear the word ‘sources say’ from the Fake Media, often times those sources are made up and do not exist."
Reactions immediately followed President Trump's tweet, a number of them disagreeing with him. Some felt Fox host Sean Hannity, who is a staunch supporter of Trump, was sympathetic to Donald Jr, thereby refusing to ask the questions that mattered.
"He was neither open, nor transparent! His remarks were obviously scripted and total denials! You're like the boy who cried "WITCH HUNT!"" Jules Suzdaltsev tweeted.
"He turned “open” & “transparent” when it became clear that @nytimes was about to publish the whole story with emails, after a year of work," Anirvan Ghosh tweeted.
The tweet follows Donald Trump Jr's Tuesday night interview on Fox News where he admitted to meeting the Russian lawyer but claimed his father knew absolutely nothing about it. Before the interview aired. Donald Trump took to Twitter to advertise it. Eric Trump also tweeted support for his family saying they are always attacked because they are close and support each other.
Eric Trump wrote: "This is the EXACT reason they viciously attack our family! They can't stand that we are extremely close and will ALWAYS support each other."
Meanwhile, in a statement read out by White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday after Donald Jr released the emails on Twitter, President Trump praised his first son and applauded him for his "transparency".
Trump said: “My son is a high-quality person, and I applaud his transparency.”
In reaction to the email exchange between Donald Jr and the Russian lawyer's PR exec, Democrats called the emails "explosive". ABC reports that a number of Democrats also claimed that the messages prove there was collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia as part of attempts by Moscow to meddle in the 2016 presidential election - something the White House has repeatedly denied.
