@ anonymous why would they come to nigeria to have their kids?? when nigeria's health care system is clearly not as advanced as western countries :/

American healthcare system is not free...
That's why they have insurance and government takes care of people that dont have...
I am really upset with people coming over here to have baby without paying....You may ask how it's my biz...yes it is because i can see the effect on my taxes..

Congratulations Basketmouth. you just made a decision the child will forever be grateful to you for. i'd pick an american citizenship EVERYTIME over my nigerian one.

Its expensive to give birth here in the US without insurance but unfortunately many Nigerians come and go thru the system and leave without paying. I pay taxes and still have to have health insurance.
Normal delivery averages about $8k and a C-section is about $10k.
My supposedly great insurance only covers $5k for normal and $7 for complicated ones aka C-sections...FYI

@Ada

That is so true. Let Nigerians keep it up. Republicans are working on changing immigration rules and one of their proposals is not giving automatic citizenship to babies born in the USA by non citizens. I believe that law will eventually pass once an immigration reform is done. And then Nigerians will be forced to have their babies in Naija or pressure their government to improve Naija healthcare. Shikena!

6.24pm - This same discussion was made when it was announced here that Bella Adenuga was going to the US to have her baby. In her case, I am sure she shelled out the money to pay for her hospital stay but there are many who just have enough to get here, give birth and leave without paying the bills. And what you have said about the immigration change to not give automatic citizenship to children of non-citizen is definitely being processed starting in Arizona where the law was first suggested. It is the truth and when I had mentioned it on the Bella Adenuga post, someone jumped in and down my throat. It is a reality that is about to come to pass if they have their way.

Being Nigerian, part of me is empathetic towards those who choose to have their children in the States who no want better ting but as a tax paying American citizen, I am a little resentful of having those unpaid bills passed down to me in form of increased taxes and increased costs at the pharmacy etc. We do not have free health care yet so unfortunately, those payments have to be spread out.

It is a no win situation, sha. Nigeria's capable doctors and nurses are leaving to work in more viable situations and the "leaders" of our nations are following them out to receive their treatment without thought for their citizen that cannot afford to leave the country to seek treatment abroad. May God help us o hmmm!

obviously some of you who reside permanently in the US are jaded on this issue..
while we are all entitled to our opinions, i find the unnecessary generalizations distateful..
i am no bella adenuga but i had my baby in the US and paid almost 30,000$ for a complicated delivery ...
and no..i'm not a silverspoon kid..just another hard working girl married to a hard working man..i also know several couples that have had babies in the US and have paid their medical bills in full so stop with the generalizations..

btw what are yáll doing in the US anyway since u sound so "naijacentric"?

if and when d bill is passed, the influx would defiitely reduce but till then...find something else to worry/bitch about..abeggg...

Sorry to dissappoint all you Nigerian American, but the Republican party's ploy to change immigration rules will not happen without a significant fight. If you know anything about American law, you would understand that this would require a radical change to the 14th Amendment which grants birthright citizenship to all children born in the UK irrespective of their parent's parentage. All Nigerians should not be tarred with the same brush, many go to the US and do pay their medical bills, and have their children in the US which is totally legal. Nigerians giving birth in the US are not the cause of higher medical bill premiums, plus in terms if non-immigrants having children in the US, they make up less of 1%.
