Castro, so you can actually die? Huh? Thought you were bigger than life. You had your own people cut off completely from the modern world. You caged your own people like animals and lived a 5 star lifestyle on their taxes. Now you are dead then Cuba and life would go on without you. It's a pity.

He tried, may his soul rest in peace.

LA HISTORIA ME ABSOLVERA, Castro, a tribute

Fidel, was unarguably one of the popular revolutionary leaders of the Marxist, socialist/communist, left wing of the 1950s. At a time when ideological conflicts ripped apart the world in what is known as 'cold war', a young army officer of the Marxist ilk made, and allegedly an ill-fated attempt to dislodge the pro western government of Fulgensia Batista. Arraigned for what was known as 'Mocanda Barrack' putsche, the young officer, Castro pleaded those imortal words 'La historia me absolvera', meaning 'history will absolve me'. Later in 1959, Castro through his revolutionary forces dislodged the pro American Batista, and for good. By this singular act, he had plunged Cuba, one of America's prized possessions won from the Spanish-American war of 1898, into communist domain! America then ideological rival of the soviet had witnessed a paradigm change in western hemisphere politics, a domain she (America) had kept isolated from world and perhaps European politics. America then had the 'Monroe's and Truman's doctrines (named after presidents James Munroe and Harry Truman) all which aimed at maintaining her suzreignty within the Latin America and Caribbean regions with a firm grip. The introduction of communism in Cuba seemed much like an anathema to America whose president, Einsenhower, feared the spread of that communist ideology in that region with likely 'domino effect'. Sanctions, embargo, restrictions and all instrumantlities of soft power were employed by America to beat back Cuba, whose independence America won into the capitalist bloc to no avail.

Fidel Castro stood alone but stood strongly in his resolve not to spoil the gains of his liberation struggle. Cuba, a neighbour of the US (close to Florida) was aligned to the communist bloc led by Russia (then Soviet Union). It was quite difficult for cuba's economy but yet with sheer determination and nationalistic resolve, Cuba was out of the woods and dependent on itself unlike its western hemisphere neighbours dependent on America's aid- dollar diplomacy!

Castro ruled and blocked any form of relations with America always rejecting as 'Greek gifts', aid, be they technical or financial from the US. Though not entirely rich by most standards, Cuba was not being straightjacketed from Washington. Even recently, Castro blasted Obama's visit as being 'veil'. Though in the end Cuba is no super power, she's not tied to america's economic, political or military apron strings. This should be a lesson for all Third World countries, especially Africa, always toeing america's line and even at their own peril. The other figure who compares to Castro is Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew. It was Babangida who led Nigeria to SAP (Structural Adjustment Program), where our currency was devalued, our border opened and our territory became dumping ground for European manufacture. We are yet to recover from that since 1986, this was what Castro fought against! As a leader, he saw the way, uncommon, uncharted, he coursed it, even in 1962 he allowed the Soviet to mount a nuclear missile against America (in what is known as Cuban Missile Crisis). Today, though dead, he has taken his place among the stars in whatever way. As Nnamdi Azikiwe once quipped, 'history will vindicate the just, and God shall punish the wicked', history has absolved Castro for in ages, many will remember him as the revolutionary icon of the 20th century and much later the 21st!

La Historia me absolvera...sometimes, you nations don't need dollar loans or aid to survive. And the rest, goes the saying is history!
