Nigerians named amongst 8 superior groups of people in the US

Writer Amy Chau, who gained notoriety 2 years ago as 'Tiger Mum' after publishing her controversial book 'Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" where she claimed that Chinese mums make the best parents and ultimately have more successful children, is back in the news.

Chau and her husband, Jed Rubenfeld, just released a controversial (and some say racist) parenting guide called 'The Triple Package', where they declared there to be only eight successful and superior groups of people in the US.

They eight are: Chinese, Jewish, Indian, Iranian, Lebanese-Americans, Nigerians, Cuban exiles and Mormons
'That certain groups do much better in America than others, as measured by income, occupational status, test scores and so on, is difficult to talk about,' Amy and Jed write.
The couple identify three distinguishing features these eight peoples have that guarantees them success over others; superiority, insecurity and impulse control. Continue...

Amy Chau, 51, breaks down the 'Triple Package' for her readers as follows:

1) A superiority complex: Chau believes that any cultural group who innately thinks they are just better than others has an advantage.
Ignoring the wars, genocide and abject human misery this kind of thinking has caused, Chau and her husband declare that 'the superiority complex is antithetical to mainstream liberal thinking...the stuff of racism , colonialism, imperialism, Nazism.'

2) Insecurity: Chau and her husband believe that a deep seated insecurity can be a motivating drive to achieving success.
'That insecurity should be a critical lever of success is another anathema, flouting the entire orthodoxy of contemporary popular and therapeutic psychology,' they write according to the New York Post.
'Note that there’s a deep tension between insecurity and a superiority complex,' the authors continue.
'It’s odd to think of people being simultaneously insecure but also convinced of their divine election or superiority.'

3) Impulse Control: Chau thinks that perseverance and patience are virtues that have been lost to most Americans - but still exist among her eight golden cultural groups.
'Impulse control refers to the ability to resist temptation, especially the temptation to give up in the face of hardship or quit instead of persevering at a difficult task.'

I sincerely agree with this lady. 99.9%. Seriously. (the people from the developed world have a very stupid sense of entitlement! So they refuse to work real hard, they give up easily, they fall off the track. When the 1% gets up and takes it all, they start crying capitalist!) But we, "the little people" that know we have no one else to rely on, we strive real haaaaaard! I agree with this woman biko.

Interesting. I don't care much for the term 'Superior group' but I certainly agree that those three things she listed define us to the core.

It always feels good to be praised. However, there's a two-edgedness to swaying to stereotypes. If positive ones are acceptable, is there also truth in the bad?

I'm not Nigerian but i think she makes pertinent points. Black Americans are the worst.

ADVICE TO AFRICAN PARENTS WHO WANT TO MOVE THE US:

- Encourage your kids to move with Asian and Indian. They are better brought up and they really study hard in school.
- Stay away from black american kids. They only know how to twerk, they do not like school and they only want to be basketball players or entertainers. For the girls, they are only looking for a celebrity to trap with pregnacy for child support instead of getting a job.

-Very important: Put your kids in white-asian dominated schools, NEVER in black -dominated schools if u do not want your child to go astray with tweking, drugs and teen pregnacy.

Linda, did u know that the senator of Indianapolis is Nigerian? An igbo man for that matter?

His name is Samuel VOP IFEANYI OSILI. Why don't u write a post about him one of these days?

Linda , google this name:

It's not racist. It's the truth!

Nigerians are creative, hard-working,are natural born entrepreneurs; In short, they have so much potential. It's so sad that most of the time, they use it for negative stuff. Thank u for being different , Linda.

This only says that we naija's are hardworking and ever ready to succeed amidst any adversity. That underscores why no matter the level of corruption or stealing by naija govt officials, ordinary naija person believes he can work out some stuff for himself not taking to street like what haapened in egypt turkey libya & lebanon. naija pepole can always carve a niche like Linda did not waiting for govt to create job but did some stuff for herself.

Linda, she is very right, chinese especially pakistanis and indian people occupy govt jobs in canada, chinese are vey hard working so they always get the bigger paid jobs. Na luck Nigerians take cruz inside better paid jobs sef

Kinda Agree with Her

Anonymous said...

Maybe it's cuz she mentioned Nigerians that i don't think it's racist but hell yeah Nigerians are hard working people even Yahoo boys work hard for the scam to work and even when we come to America we still have that Naija mentality and the people she mentioned i agree we do kind of act alike maybe it's cuz we grew up in a society where we got spanked for doing bad things, we saw and understood the importance of hustle, but deep down we all had our fears, so i do agree
Go Nigerians!

@ ekpeyong or goat young you must be daft, what has ethnic group has to do with it. Stupid fool. We are one in Nigeria. Or you want to remind us that your ethnic group men are born cooks, and the women ashawos. . What is wrong with you. We with collectively to make Nigeria proud. You are fool for making that comment child.

Of course, by Nigerians, she means Igbo. The Igbo definitely have Superiority complex and a feeling of insecurity since the Civil War. They also have Impulse control. And they form the biggest Nigerian community in the US.

GOD BLESS BIAFRA.

I live in Calgary, Canada and I have been told by people of different races that they recognize Nigerians when they see them because we have this bold look abd cannot be easily intimidated. I think it's something that stems from withing us, our backgrounds, our sense of entitlement, being a very enlightened group of people, knowing the stuff we are made of and our resilient nature that keeps us striving for the best to get to the top. I totally agree with this couple!

Anonymous said...

It's true o, my girl got into a top selective school in Uk after several exams only to find out on induction day that it's full of Nigerians! Go Naija go!! Lol.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm. She is talking about Nigeerians in the US NOT the Nigerians in Nigeria. Can't you guys read and comprehend?

MY TURN said...

Nigerians abroad enter anywhere mouth first... it intimidates every other race. This is her opinion though.

Anonymous said...

So the Nigerians in America r all Igbo now Abi you guys need to get over yourselves

That's why igbo's haven't been presidents or ruled Nigeria in a while now. I see the superiority.

@Anon Jan 7 9:57pm

YOU need to get over your stupidity. Learn to understand English: Igbo make the LARGEST NIGERIAN DEMOGRAPHIC in the US. Find this out.

@Anon Jan 8 6:01am

With all the other tribes that have handled Nigeria, guess why Nigeria is nowhere. You can have the Nigerian presidency and shove it. We are Biafrans, We are the future. GOD BLESS BIAFRA.
