Well spoken Stella. Well spoken! Nigerians should please use the social media and ensure that this malaise among our senators is stopped! We do not know the power we have with Facebook, Twitter, Blackberry, etc. The world is watching. CNN, UN etc are watching our reaction. Let's not keep silent and go about business as usual. Tomorrow a corrupt politician will rape a young girl and make a weak offer to marry her since the useless constitution supports him and he'd escape the judgement of the law. Nigerians should say NO! to the rape of a girl-child in the name of marriage.

I actually had tears running down my face when she said 'dont let them do this to our babies' I feel every bit of emotion you felt there Stella, anger, pain, disgust, frustration, confusion. It breaks my heart over and over again.
Here's the thing though. Nigerians are never consistent. Everyone's talking about it now, we'll keep talking about it in the next couple of days, perhaps weeks. But trust me, it'll all die down like so many other issues. wheres occupy Nigeria today? what happened to the Aluu 4? who knows if the murderers are truly in prison? Here's hoping that we truly stand for this and fight with everything we have.
We Nigerians never use the power of our Population and the truth is that is all we have right now seeing as we have air-heads as leaders. its soo annoying that an insignificant fraction of our population make all these stupid decisions and we all just stomach them. There are sooo many things we can change.
LETS FIGHT FOR THIS, AND FIGHT ALL THE WAY.
By the way, Yerima should be castrated. maybe he'll make better use of his position seeing as they've refused to impeach him.

Dental news and the rest of you insulting this woman for getting married to a certain man, i think y'all should just shut the F up. Does a woman propose to a man or the other way round? If the married man in question suddenly forgot dat he is married and decides to take up another wife who is in agreement, na which one be ur own for the matter? see ur teeth sef. Drinking panadol for another person's medicine. Why do women hate demselves dis much? Instead of coming on the man for leaving his wife and marrying another, we attack the woman, calling her a husband snatcher. What is wrong with you?
She has spoken wisely using this forum, something that y'all will never have the guts to do. Appreciate her actions and keep ur negativity to urself please.

We can all come on linda's blog to commend stella and pure out our mind but the *QUESTION is WHAT ARE U READY TO DO TO DEFEND YOUR FUTURE AND YOUR RIGHT*

I REST MY BRAIN

Awhy said...

shout out to those of you who had tears in your eyes while she was ranting! Your tears were in vain. Why?
1) Cause there is no bill been passed on child marriage
2) some senators tried to "Amend" the law on marriage by putting an age to it but their voice was overpowered by their Northern counterparts (dats democracy 4 u)
3) We keep citing Yerima's 13yr old bride as an example, guess what? she is Egyptian!

Finally, we should channel our angers to "war against rape". That way we can protect the girl child today and when she's in power, she might enact changes for what we are blindly crying about #childnotbride

Its simple;
A man violates ur daughter + obviously she said no to the act= Rape
A man violates ur daugheter, he argues she consented= rape
A man marries ur "4 year old daughter" + you can prove she did not consent to the act= Rape.

This should be our fight.

My name is Awhy and I say "Mothers, keep your children!"

Anonymous said...

I am a muslim but that act is a stupid one indeed, why are they misquoting ALLAH's words and the HOLY BOOK leave them cos many of them will rot in jail, as for the law amendment just for the sake for someone to live ba? that person will die one day and face the WRATH OF GOD, as for the BAD politicians leave them they are the ones who ALMIGHTY HAS CHOOSE TO LEAD ASTRAY if they don't repent now their hereafter will be FIRE FOR A START, AS FOR US LETS KEEP ON PRAYING FOR THIS COUNTRY COS I BELIEVE ONE DAY NIGERIA WILL BE DIVINED! ITS WELL WITH OUR SOULS IN HIS MIGHTY NAME.

To all the foolish commenters, talking about this ladys personal life, you are all the beginning of the problem. Ignorant Nigerians, always eager to criticise and gossip about meaningless things... if your mouth is so big and you are so disgusted by things that are wrong, should you not be standing up and talking for the voiceless??? every single person who wasted their time to write about her personal life, is a disgrace to the nation, is partly responsible for the fate of these children. How can a person boldly take a stance and rather than foucs on the issue, and think of what you can do, you are sitting there insulting a person brave enough to do something.

NOTHING IN NIGERIA WILL CHANCE TILL WE LEARN TO STAND FOR WHAT WE BELIEVE IN, STOP BEING DISTRACTED BY MINDLESS GOSSIP AND DO SOMETHING, IF NOT NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE.

To everyone who posted and still posting comments; and indeed all Nigerians, It is not about Stella now. We all have our shortcomings although, husband snatching and its ally (if proved) are not the best to be involved in. They are equally shameful and distasteful. However, TRUTH must be said that NIGERIA IS NOT AN ISLAMIC COUNTRY; it is secular in nature borne out of our respective choices and there is nothing anybody can do about that. To this end, nobody, I repeat, nobody has the right to lord one religion over any other. We have all shown understanding arising from mutual respect, by agreeing that both Orthodox and Sharia Laws can be accommodated and if under your own law, it is permitted to marry an underage girl, so be it but that should not be made to be a Law for the entire nation. No, it is not acceptable. By the way, why will the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria get busy in a subservient issue. What about all other more important national issues? I want to restrain from thinking (rightly though) like others who must have degraded the Senate, hoping as I do, that they will listen to voice of reason because one person does not dig a grave and clear the earth therefrom neither does an egg has hair strands.

What does husband snatching have to do with this issue? Do u want to compare husband snatching to pedophilia ? She is here speaking on behalf of children who do not have a voice and all you can do is point a finger at her life and mistakes. Like all of you are perfect. If they could put a camera on your lives, we would see much worse things. This mentality is the reason why Nigeria is still the way it is. Rather than facing issues head on, we choose to use our stupid judgement to cloud issues. Maybe when u are given an option of someone snatching ur husband or wife or marrying your 6 years old daughter, you would choose for them to marry your child. Idiots.

Why are the deviation from the subject matter and cursing out Stella? The last l checked husband snatching involves two consenting adult , but infant and cradle snatching in the name of marriage is not. This men a perverts that needs to be stopped. The best we can do is lend a voice like Stella did, not an insult. Am not a big fan of Stella, but the issue at hand is not about her, it's about a girl child whose life is about to be put on the line by our miserable, irresponsible lawmakers.

Our senate did not pass a bill on early marriage what they did was; The senate voted on section 29 (4) (B) of the constitution which talks about if a person wants to denounce their citizenship the person should be 18 but a woman who is married (irrespective of her age - emphasis mine) shall be deemed of age. Finish oh. This law has been there for 14 years, because the senate didn't remove it in the current constitutional review, it has become a problem. But, I understand that this part of this constitution not being removed has implications as though it is agreeing that girls below 18 can get married and it will not allow sections in the Child Rights Act to go ahead

Never mind, just remember that recently, the Senate President said that no country fights a second civil war and survives it. A lot of things are testing and insulting our sensibilities!

dear LIB readers, I understand the issue about religion, and obeying God's command. i have a little question for all in support of this barbaric act. if we all claim that whatever religion we follow is true and has the right message, i beg to ask "DID WE ALL GET THE MESSAGE?". do we all critically understand what the message each religion is founded on? if your religion is based on any other thing than Love of God and Love of neighbor, then u are on a broad long thing.

I salute your courage Stella! Why do we all still live in cowardice? Speak your mind! We are here to fight the stupid bill... You are here criticizing what a courageous person has put forward, under the guise of 'Anonymous'. Nigerians always have issues but, instead of find solutions, they lay back shamefully pointing out silly things about a person helping the situation. Is that the solution to our problems?? Leave Stella's personal life out of this and lets all grow up an sort this issue out as a nation! In other news.... Shame on all those abusing her! You all are no different from the Yerima pervert! I stand strongly with you Stella! We need more courage like this!!! Lets fight this! Lets fight corruption!!!

i personally feel that nigeria should just stop running on biblical and islamic laws. Second of all she should call the names of the senators and not group them all together, some of them actually get sense, it was not all of them that brought out this stupidity

I'm writing this to ENLIGHTEN everyone speaking up against child marriage. some have called those carrying the #childnotbride campaign IGNORANT as the issue is not underage marriage but who is allowed to renounce their Nigerian citizenship. Well I must admit that some people although their hearts are in the right place are misinformed. Well not all of are "ignorant". We know what we are saying.
The bone of contention is there already exists a bill in our constitution that states that anyone over the age of 18 is allowed to renounce their Nigerian citizenship. Then a subsection goes further to state that anyone who is married(regardless of age) is deemed "of full age". Now the senate house decided to amend this bill to remove that subsection. But pedophile yerima objected citing that Islamic law allows for girls of any age to be married and then termed "of full age" so the removal of the clause will be going against Islamic law.

So why this clause should be removed is that it adds grease to the elbow of underage marriage. The bill already states that 18 yr old and above can renounce their citizen ship so the sub section stating that anyone who is married is deemed of full age confirms that there are people in nigeria that are not upto 18yrs but married and then further goes on to say that the country condones these marriages And will allow such children to participate in "adult activities" like renunciation of citizenship. But this goes against the child right act that states anyone over the age is a child and will not be allowed to be married
Now OUR argument is that we do not accept that ppl under the age of 18 should be married and hence we will not allow any bill that states or implies that we do. Our little girls should not be married to yerima and his likes so we say NO. THE BILL SHOULD BE AMENDED because nigeria is not an Islamic country.

@prince charming u should ashamed of urself, are we discussing Stella or the issue of child marriage? what has her admiration got to do with the bone of contention?
also, those calling her aristo, she is an adult and can sleep with whoever she decides to sleep its not u people's business! she isn't under 18, she is old enough to make decisions for herself! She has spoken well and I admire her courage.

Every mother should be angry at this because when you imagine the labor pains you went through you will not want a child going through that in the name of religion.

How will this country move forward when all we like to do is point fingers with no action. Here's Stella screaming to the world about the wickedness of our nation overflowing and all you can do is insult her. So what if she did something wrong? Is that the issue here? Or maybe that's more important to you than the small girls who are about to be sold off to disgusting oafs like those Senators and their colleagues. I don't care if Lil Wayne or Leanne Rimes comes out to talk about this. It is time for these hardened criminals ruling our country to feel some shame. And all these their globetrotting children eating our nations money should just know. If our children are fair game, so are you. I will not hesitate to shame you into shaming your parents.

Stella may lack the basic moral etiquette (at least to some people) to put mouth in such issues, i strongly believe she gets this one right.
Child marriage is despicable, we must jointly condemn it. It poses a lot of health risk to the juvenile girl if she get pregnant as well as to the infant if she eventually born the child safely. here are its health risks according to unicef

Anonymous said...

See the hypocrites. Two consenting adults can't be together, because in sine out dated inhuman book it claims to say so, but the leaders back a move to legalize under age marriage.... supported by theological statutes. If you're all so pious, why are you complaining. Mixed up priorities.

looking for cheap popularity..she's only taking advantage of the situation to regain importance.. people had better not fall for her fakeness.. like she cares

Rejoinder to 'ChildnotBride': Dear Nigerians, let us try to ascertain the true position of the law before we rise up to fight. There is no bill pending before the Senate to amend the marriage age of a child, what is before the Senate is a bill for the Amendment of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Section 29 sub section 4a states that 'full age' means the age of eighteen years and above;'. However, subsection 4b then goes ahead to state 'any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age'. What the senate is trying to achieve is to amend the constitution by expunging this subsection 4b because it gives room for anyone to marry an underage girl and she instantly becomes an adult under our existing laws!!! So please let us join hands and support those Senators who wish to expunge this particular subsection. Senator Yerima on the other hand is fighting to keep this subsection as is. The Child Rights Act enacted by the National Assembly already stipulates the age of marriage as 18 years, however, the jurisdiction of the Child Rights Act is limited to the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, what we need to do now is to mount pressure on the states houses of assembly to domesticate the provisions of the Child Rights Act by enacting the Child Rights Law for the respective states. Lets fight for the right cause. The future of our daughters is at stake.
