US Government condemns Jonathan's pardon for Alams and others

The United States Government is deeply disappointed over the recent pardons of corrupt officials by the Government of Nigeria. We see this as a setback in the fight against corruption." US Mission in Nigeria.

Meanwhile presidential spokesman Doyin Okupe has said the the Presidential Pardon granted the former Bayelsa governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, can be equated to the same pardon accorded late Emeka Ojukwu and Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Is that so? What do you guys think?

If only I can lay my hands on this fat fool called Doyin Okupe, I will give a merciless beating, I will take all his teeth out!

Unknown said...

That is sooo sooo wrong. Ojukwu's crime was one that if you sat down for a moment and considered at that time, there would have been a little bit of sense in it. There is no reason to sit down and consider Alameseigha's cos there is no justification whatsoever for money laundering. But I'm not surprised. It's same Nigeria. What is the difference between the spokesman and "my oga at the top man"

Of course US government is on point! I myself was shocked at our high level of free hand to corruption. I am just so frazzled lamenting over and over again over Nigerians corruption driven sense, why give pardon to such persons, they are just a corrupt cabal.

Emeka Ojukwu led the fight in a war that was squarely backed by the majority of his people!

Awolowo led the way to uhuru and was followed by the majority of his people!

Alams rode on the back of the majority of his people and stole their common wealth!

Do connect the dots, dear didirin Okupe, if you may!

Ojukwu and Awolowo were political convictees, men who were fighting or working for something they believe in. Alams is an embezzler of public funds, a big-time thief, working only for his belly at the expense of the other citizens in his state and country. Two different things please!

Why Did Goodluck Jonathan Pardon Alamieyeisegha?

In as much as the people of Nigeria are rightly angry at the pardon granted by GON i however believe this is an internal affair of Nigeria and its high time US departments stopped interfering in what does not concern them. American presidents grant 100's of pardons during their tenure and they do not receive condemnation for exercising their constitutional right by other countries. I expect Okupe and co to put them in their place with a strong worded criticism.

I am not an ethnic jingoist, however, I sincerely believe it is a prerogative and perceptive based issues and as for me I welcome it and if others don't then that is the great aspect of democracy; tolerance is expected in a democratic settings and acceptance is individual and not forced.

Ojukwu and Gowon combined extinguished over 1 million lives and even Shagari was not happy pardoning them but had to because the force of lobby which is an integral part of democracy saw different and as such if we have lived and survive that up till now that; why can't we do same on another front here or no we can't because some few think they are better in presidential decisions than one elected.

Please we are in democracy say as you feel no one will flog you as long as life continues one atrocity will be overcome in a generation, so ALAMS will not be end of pardon as no barge is given.

Soon my friend Al Mustapha will be pardon and same will happen and pass.

Come 2015 and GEJ contest again I will vote for him and that does not mean I am more Nigerian than you or you are more than me in that sense, it is simple democratic right of choice and prerogative.

The law of pardon is called Prerogative Mercy and for those that care to know is not something that requires a collective to decide but just an individual and as such the president has exercise that right as the law permit and does not need to consider anyone but himself on that and he alone will face the consequence and no one, so if that is your reason to vote him out do so at your own right of freedom and prerogative vote.

If morality and ethics are used in governance by now even UN would have had that and see atrocities in Palestine, Iraq etc. but it does not and will never because it is an individual perception but instead laws and legality are used to make such decisions.

And who're the character references on behalf of the looters. Are they taxpayers, and etc. How did JEG get the access of the Presidential Pardons if Justice Department ain't involved?. It's DOJ will be involved before JEG signed the Pardons. If Justice Dept didn't process pardons then Judges should quit their jobs. It's their duty to disclosure all their criminal activities and conviction. JEG can't just pick those interest him for his personal pardons. Why only politicians, military officers, and others we had no idea of. The main thing here is JEG wants them to hold key positions. Those affected are already pardoned previously and few of them are working for him presently. I promised JEG has cleaned their records as usual. Alamieyeseigha served as governor of Bayelsa state, in the heart of Nigeria's oil-producing southern delta, from 1999, when the nation became a democracy, through 2005. He was arrested in London after more than $1 million in cash was found in his home there. Alamieyeseigha escaped British authorities — Nigerian officials say he disguised himself as a woman — and fled to Nigeria, where he ultimately stood trial.

Alamieyeseigha's impeachment brought Jonathan, a little-known marine biologist who served as his deputy, into power. Jonathan as recently as a few weeks ago referred to Alamieyeseigha as "my boss" during an event in Lagos.

Analysts and activists routinely refer to Nigeria as having one of the world's most corrupt governments. The continent's most populous nation, Nigeria likely lost more than $380 billion to graft between 1960 and 1999, authorities have said. Meanwhile, just more than 60 percent of Nigerians earn the equivalent of less than $1 a day, according to a study published by the country's National Bureau of Statistics.

Since the closed-door meeting Tuesday where Jonathan decided on the pardon, Nigerians have reacted with anger on Twitter and elsewhere over the decision. An editorial Friday in The Punch newspaper of Lagos simply said: "The situation is becoming hopeless."

Lolz @Mr Doyin's comment......God is watching y'all in 3D. Shm for my dear belove country.

That was a careless talk from Mr Doyin Okupe! why should he equate Alam's pardon to that of Pa Awo and Ojuku? this govt. should check their conscience to see if they are sincere about the fight against corruption.

The truths is Nigerians are not ready 2 fight corruption yet.In my opinion dat sectn in d constitution should be Expounge.

All d U.S can do is jst 2 air its views by condemning Nigeria's action (as they have).
Really and truly, it means nothg 2 sum1 like me kus d President is acting within d confines of d law. Nigeria's Constitution,1999 (as amended) provides 4 state pardon and d@s exactly d power exercised by d president and d council of states. Its best 4 dem 2 attend 2 its own state affairs in stead of commenting on wot concerns dem not. And 2 all of u condemning GEJ on ds, I want u'all 2 take a look @ yaselves....does God 4give your Sins wenever u fall short of his glory?
D@s exactly wot d@ pardon means! Stop beefing n move on wt life. In any case, who amongst u is a saint...*wink*

@Prince Olusegun you are so daft and senseless what do you mean internal affair..mugu

This Doyin Okupe is a shameless man. How could have equated a thief to Ojukwu and Awolowo. I am highly disappointed at the grant of presidential pardon to these rogues yet Mr. Okupe is here talking dust. I hope the same pardon is granted prisoners who only stole a loaf of bread to cure their hunger or even stole just five hundred naira and are currently jailed in Kirkiri. then we can all go and perfect our stealing skills know very well that we will be granted pardon. Alams should be in jail for life. He stole what would have been used to help millions of people. He should not have left free at all.

US, should go and take a chill pill...Only one person can give pardon and that is the president, and someday Ibori will be pardoned. Politics is not moral, it is a game of lobbying, sentiment and number.

chinedu onyibe-akenzua ..you are so daft with your poorly spoken English, all you said was a total deviation from everybody's opinion that expresses how mentally dull you are....Good comments guys!!!glad a lot of us have beginning to see the evil in our Country Nigeria, but its quite disheartening you all will march our in Larger numbers to vote this vampires who left our country in shamble, most of you mentioning Americans should just go die somewhere....We are talking about Nigeria our country,so damn the baseless points about who was pardoned in America and all what's not..Do you think people in America live the way you guys live there?everything owned in that country is for all the citizens and not few govt officials,.....Look at what Nigerians have lost to the heartless bastards Analysts and activists routinely refer to Nigeria as having one of the world's most corrupt governments. The continent's most populous nation, Nigeria likely lost more than $380 billion to graft between 1960 and 1999, authorities have said. Meanwhile, just more than 60 percent of Nigerians earn the equivalent of less than $1 a day, according to a study published by the country's National Bureau of Statistics.$380 billion as at 1999 so the figure would have risen to $700 billion. This is our funds not only that of Obasanjo,GEJ,Tinubu and countless others,my question is what would be the future of your kids???this people left our fathers in penury...So those of you mentioning America should just shut up and lets fight for our country,I say this again will join wherever I am.The pardon of Alams is not even it...lets all watch out if GEJ eventually wins come 2015,bet me Alams would be given another political post...

U must be a benefactor of the Jonathan Government. Please face the truth, our leaders have lost all sense of morality or integrity. It's a pity that a set of people less than 1% of the populace will hold our resources to ransom and keep lying to us. Hand go soon meet all of them.

Nigerians, we never lack words and we can talk and talk about every single thing on the surface of the earth...until we turn pink in the face. That wont change anything. We should begin to ask ourselves essential questions and genuinely do a really deep soul search: HOW DO WE STOP ALL THIS MESS? How do we clean up the system and begin to hold people ACCOUNTABLE for what they DO, not what they say? Again, we have people who will say the darnest things. Fellow Nigerians, how do we effect CHANGE in the status quo?

Never really hated this PRESIDENT this much, never really felt this disgusted. As a nation we have all made a unilateral decision to stand against corruption, for us corrupt leaders are enemies of the nation, they undermine us as a people and take hope away from our unborn children. They are the reason for extreme poverty, for insecurity, for lose of lives and properties, wanthom killings, they are the reason for lack of education, under development and thus they are ENEMIES of the PEOPLE. OMG! yet the PRESIDENT has the audacity to grant pardon??? JONATHAN has just declared himself the NUMBER 1 enemy of his people. How can you compare Ojukwu's struggle that was based on a clear maginalization of his people and a fight for freedom with this vagabon called ALAshit! Jonathan is sooooooooooooo goneeeeeeeee.

Jonathan hates this country, he'll never get back a second time. God bless Nigeria
