The safety of air travel in Nigeria is in question again. In a petition sent on December 5 to the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, the Major Oil Marketers Association (MOMAN) alleges that some unscrupulous Nigerians are selling kerosene meant for domestic consumption (DPK) to aviation operators as jet fuel (Jet A1).
And SaharaReporters has learned that SAHARA ENERGY LTD, which is the monopoly importer of DPK on behalf of the NNPC, is one of the companies responsible for passing off DPK to such airlines as Arik Air, Chachangi Airlines, Air Nigeria, DANA Air and Associated Airlines as aviation fuel, making a staggering monthly profit of USD43million in the process.
SAHARA ENERGY LTD, which is owned by Tope Sonubi and Tonye Cole, perpetrates the dangerous but profitable scam through its SO Aviation subsidiary, and it makes its vast profits by taking advantage of its position to sell the product, which it obtains from the NNPC at only N40.90k per litre, to the airlines as imported aviation fuel at N152 per litre.
But they are not the same product. While Jet A1 and DPK are similar products, said MOMAN in its petition, they possess “totally different specifications and require different levels of handling, transportation and storage infrastructure” expertise possessed by members of MOMAN who are duly audited annually and certified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Joint Inspection Group (JIG).”
As a result, “The final product dispensed into the aircraft meets DFSTAN and AFRQJOS standards,” MOMAN said.
Our investigations have further shown that international airlines such as British Airways, Emirates, KLM and Lufthansa refuse to purchase Aviation fuel from SO Aviation, out of concern for established standards and safety.
Checks in the international market, particularly in the Lloyds has also confirmed that SAHARA ENERGY has not imported Aviation fuel in recent times solely for sale to airline operators in Nigeria.
SaharaReporters has not been able to confirm if the Minister for Petroleum Resources has taken any actions in response to the petition in order to save the country further air tragedies.
In one of its two recommendations in MOMAN’s petition to her, it asked that the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC) share with the association all the required information on DPK PFIs being issued monthly so as to ensure adequate tracking of the supplies from the Mother Vessels to the eventual points of sale. In return, MOMAN would provide that information to the PPMC for their records.

Erm Linda. Jet fuel is nothing but highly refined kerosene.
Except it is adulterated Kerosene, there is no safety threat posed if one uses one or the other.
The main reason Kerosene is used and not gasoline is that it is not as flammable as the latter.
What does she knw she will do; she is a sorry excuse of a minister, does not know squat abt her position, one of the many curses of GEJ......mtshewww
God help us in this country oh! This is just d height of wickedness
Please. People, please, put your mind at rest. I have good news for you. The safety of air travel in Nigeria is NOT in question.
Apart from selling kerosene meant for domestic consumption (DPK) to aviation operators as jet fuel (Jet A1), SAHARA ENERGY LTD and others are NOW also selling parashute (made from recycled toilet paper). They are of the higest international standard. They were made in Afghanistan.
This is a serious issue. For the sake of Nigerian air travelers, lets hope this is one investigation that isn't swept under the carpet.
Linda..hot off the press..quite sad and sickening!!..
I am a dying African bestial porn actress stranded in Europe

Na wah NIgeria we hail thee! Why do Nigerians not care about other human beigns? All we care about is making money how can people be so heartless? God help us o
Lord have mercy! Shonubi! It shall not be well with you. Your wealth will evaporate. Can you imagine him selling kerosine to Arik Air to fly the long distance trip to U.S.A and England. Even a short one to Abuja can be catastrophic. When are we going to be rid of animals like this Tope Sonubi. When are we going to be free from shylocks and useless people who have no value for life and it's sanctity in Nigeria. I had my fears when it was announced that Nigerian carriers have been given the liscence to fly to U.S.A. I actually decided never to fly them. God forbid bad thing. Once people like Tope Sonubi is a friend of their M.D, it is a direct license to do anything. He will supply the product and the people that are supposed to check for originality and maintain standard will turnaround blind eye. I have told as many people as I know not to fly Nigeria carriers across the Atlantic until we see changes. Life has no duplicate. It is God that protect but I have the responsibility of Choosing what to fly in.
Anyway I hope Tope will come out to tell the truth and not pin it on his enemies and competitors like they always say.
For once, please tell the truth, apologize and turn a new leaf. It will earn you more respect and build your integrity.
Gosh! How can a country be so consumed with the spirit of thief thief and robbery like this. It is an embarrassment and a sure cause for concern to those me eecially. I don't know if anybody feels like I feel. But I wish things could be better. And people scan just be good and act right and not be this covetous and greedy. Where dem wan carry the money go sef? Ewwww. Lord have mercy on Nigeria.
Sahara Reporters = Ignorance Is Bliss Reporters
Kerosene IS Jet Fuel to all intents and purposes.
wahala dey
na wa o...
"While Jet A1 and DPK are similar products, said MOMAN in its petition, they possess “totally different specifications" This is a direct quote from the write up. If we are operating a capitalist system or at best a pluralistic economy, you should expect that the business man would pursue profit maximization rather than welfare. If Sahara Energy has the license to import both the Jet A1 and the Household kerosene, and JetA1 is more profitable, why would they import kerosene? As for using Household kerosene as aviation fuel, U can tell that to the birds. The planes would have been falling out of the skies. Try using Diesel in ur petrol engine. As far as I am concerned, these kind of publications from bad belle people only go to stiffle enterprenuership.
Dangerous na wa o!!..me I dey fly go Abuja over xmas period o!!..this people are so greedy and have little regard for human lives just to be "BIG BOYS"
At least we now know why there's been pointless plane crashes and pointless deaths because some people decided to be greedy and callous. When will people just be honest in Nigeria??? This is really sad and pathetic.
This is scary. Greed in Nigeria is what will make Nigerians put the lives of their fellow compatriots in danger. Roads are death traps and flying is equally dangerous. I fear Nigeria. Sigh.
? Kerosene = Jet Fuel, Jet Fuel = Kerosene except naija uses something else to refer to what we consider Kerosene...
Yes, the kerosene used to burn a lantern is the same one used to fuel a jet plane.
God we need your help in Nigeria. Take charge and touch the heart of those who are planning evils against this great nation.
So i want to make a caricature of that gbenga character in the previous post, d one dat said stuff about ibo women.
Ok, dis ofe nmanu men no go kill persin o...ah ah. Greedy men....so na to put other citizen's life in danger na wetin dem sabi...kai...ndi ofe nmanuuuu....na wa o.
So, who betrayed the ibos during the war = ofe nmanu
who betrayed ojukwu during the war = ofe nmanu
who betrayed nigeria through bakassi = ofe nmanu
who betrayed the niger deltans = ofe nmanu
and now who wants to betray nigeria as a whole = ofe nmanu
Should i go on....lmao...just for laughs though.
Naija and greed! It's sad that life means nothing in Nigeria. If you have a useless government, then human security cannot be guaranteed in a country with such government.
Nigeria n nigerians
@Vaughn Samuel
What has profitability got to do with either? They are the same exact darn product.
YOu might want to read this to educate yourself:

Hi Linda and all dedicated readers.
This story will be a lot more complete if you Post Sahara Energy's Rejoinder published yesterday for we, your readers to have the complete view of this story. I think it is only fair. Emerging facts now reveal why the major marketers want to frustrate the independents and continue to control the markets. They are for obvious reasons hiding under the emotional umbrella of aviation safety. Please post the rejoinder.
Baba
Linda,
hope you will also grant the rebuttal of Sahara Energy (it's all over the papers of yesterday and today) the same prominence you granted this unfounded allegation.
We all remember the incidence of the "killer indomie". Nigerians fear competition and would go any length to damage hard built reputations.
Enough word....for anyone who desires something in life, listen to both sides before making a judgement. An unregistered association with no verifiable address and faceless chairman makes an allegation and we all jump on the news. God help us all!
we are finished all for greed
For God sake.nigerian is an empty country,i mean noting is working there no good road;good school;good hosptal;no good airline;no national airline,i mean totally dead country.
@anonymous 7.22pm
Two wrongs never make a right, your satire is not funny and highly condemnable and even worse coming from a young person. Racist banter is counter productive and does not help and is the bane of our slow paced economy and social integration
You self Linda, you should screen what u put up!!!
ummm....
DPK - Dual Purpose Kerosene can be use for homes AND flying aeroplanes.
Ignorance is a disease!
Kerosene - HHK (Household Kerosene), DPK (Dual Puropse Kerosene), Jet A1.
The only one that cannot be used for planes is HHK.
Shikena
though they are the same product the one for airline is slightly milder so that the engine does not get damaged. they can not be using the one we use to cook and not expect tragedy. i hope the minster is listening because it can be her that would be travelling on the plane and then well i leave the rest.....
