Mass failure as the Nigerian Law School releases results

Choi! The Nigerian Law School results was released in the early hours of today August 6th and according to a LIB source, many students failed. They estimate that about 40% of the students failed the exam, about another 45% with General Pass and 15% making First Class, Second Class Upper and Second Class Lower.

This is the second time the Law School will be turning out a large number of students with bad results but this year seems better than last year. Many of the students are devastated. But what is going on, why is this happening?

What is happening is that either Nigerians don't read no thanks to technology or Nigerian lecturers have sworn to get rich from bribery & threats to students

Its simple to tell the problem; whereby more than 50% of students fail a particular exam,it means that the teachers did not do their jobs well enough.we acknowledge the fact that students are not doing justice to their books too,but with 60% failure, there is something obviously wrong with the teachers.unless they are insinuating that our universities are rather graduating empty brains....my opinion though

Unknown said...

Linda, its not every day dat d weather is favourable. Same tin applies to d performance's of students. Let them study hard then they wil pass well. Simple!

Anonymous said...

Linda, this is not the second time its happening... This is the 2nd time the media is covering it. Its always happened from time. Averagely, only 20 to 35% of the people who wrote the exam graduate on the first attempt.

It might seem harsh, but the truth is that there's no magic to it. If u don't study to understand and apply it properly, its impossible to pass.

Most students are used to cramming, cheating in exams and/ or sorting lecturers from where they are coming from, and non of that is allowed at the law school. Even if u take d textbook into d hall and u can't apply d answer to d question, na fail the person go still fail.

Tough luck to the ones who didn't pass but like every law school all over the world, u really have to earn your grades before it can be handed to u.

To be a lawyer no be by beans o

Linda what are you asking? A lot of people find reading a big chore these days. Too many graduates from British and American universities where you don't have too much emphasis on cramming and pedagogy, which just happens to be the style of learning in Nigeria. Lindaikeji was agog with Nigerian first class graduates of foreign universities a while ago. In Nigerian universities, holders of 4.5-above GPA are few and far between. These same first class grads from foreign unis come back home only to flunk their law school exams. Go figure...

often times the students read but fail to practice past questions to see how to answer dis questions. it is as simple as this: eg Que: A new baby requires an identity and the identity is required to last a life time. differnt strokes for differnt people, identity can be immediate or after 8 days or in d week of birth. what is this identity ans: name. But trust me now. you have to show d lawyer in u. you answers like this:Ans: cultural evaluation of identity has gone into a momentary relapse which is found on the premise of DNA blah blah. pls how is that related to a single word ans. i am a product of the Nigerian Law sch and it was way easier than d university.

It serves them right, again the black man or Nigerian mentality, must every one be a lawyer? Why don't they do what they love instead of what their parents, friends or society want? That is one of the reasons Africa is not growing. In Europe, America and other parts of the world people do what they love. That is why i love Keffi the dancer, she is doing what she love's and she is successful..

it is a pity students of these days are not willing to study hard due to the various distraction from their peers and social media. However, there is a learning platform called the virtual class which makes learning fun its called www.askthelawyeronline.com/virtualclass intending law school students should give them and see them pass their exams in flying colours

Coz they are always on social media (Linda Ikeji) instead of reading their books.....lol

Anonymous said...

I am a lawyer while one may be tempted that this is done on purpose, I make bold to say that simple distractions are actually behind this! social media et al!
Those who complain about the failure and want the standard relaxed, are same people who will abuse some lawyers when you see them out there saying thrash!

Anonymous said...

Why won't they fail exams. Children of now and days don't read anymore. All they do is facebook, twitter, social media, watch TV etc. When there was no technology or GSM phone to distract them, they used to score better grades. Now, internet is distracting them plus phone calls, ipad, blackberry and text messages. They no longer concentrate on their studies because of technology. It is sad.

The truth is that a singular factor cannot be adjudged to be the sole reason for any failure at the Nigerian Law School.

There are several other reasons. Chief among these factors is FEAR.

Students easily get scared of the exam even before the exam is written due to stories of failure and misfortune told them (students) by some of their Lecturers.

This creates anxiety thereby compelling some of the lily -livered students to read in apprehension.

Now, another factor worthy to be considered is the grading policy of the Nigerian Law School.

The policy ensures that students are rated with their weakest point. A candidate who scores 70 percent in four courses and unfortunately scores 40 percent in the fifth subject will have the 'privilege' of graduating with a 'Pass'.

If such a candidate scores 39, he will have the misfortune of having a 'Conditional Pass' without recourse to the 70 percent in the other four subjects.

Furthermore, there is this particular course Law School allegedly considers as 'very important'.

This course is known as Professional Ethics and Skills (Law in Practice, L.I.P).
It has been alleged that once a candidate fails this course, then such a person has kissed his/her admission into the Nigerian Bar 'bye bye' for that year, irrespective of what the candidate may have scored in the other courses.

A failure in L.I.P automatically translates to failure of the Bar finals exam. This policy which is aimed at ensuring that Law School Students are grounded in every aspect of the legal profession is actually taking its toil on Law School candidates.

The workload is another major cause of failure. It's like combining the academic activities from 100 level to 400level in one academic session.
How do you expect an average Student from the University to cope in such a battle-like condition? It will be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a niddle than for such students to pass exams in such an atmosphere.
Above all, the God factor. To me, this is the most important as the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise... not yet favour to men of skills, but TIME and CHANCE happens to them all.
