Buhari: This Is Not The People's Victory - by Adekoya Boladale

Adekoya Boladale is a political scientist and scholar on good governance, a social commentator and consultant on political and intra governmental affairs. He is the Convener, Advocacy for Better Leadership (ABEL), Nigeria. Below is an interesting article he wrote. He said Nigeria is run by five people. 1. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma. 2. Ibrahim Babangida, 3. Emir of Kano, 4. Olusegun Obasanjo and 5. the Oil Mafias. Read and tells us what you think...

Buhari: This Is Not The People's Victory
Few years ago, one of my student stood up in the middle of a lecture and asked, 'Sir, who owns Nigeria?' I was teaching a topic on colonialism and it could have been easy for me to answer, the British, but that would have been appropriate if only we were still under colonial rule. Its been decades since we exchanged the union jack for the green and white flag to enjoy self-government. The question though simple to a layman, is pregnant with meanings.

First, this student having assessed the society he lives in, have come to question the principle of democracy, the mode of governance and the political power play in the process of winning election. He has come to doubt the overblown theory of self governance, independence and strength of an elected political office holder. He sees an illusion in democracy and as a world of make believe, where twisted public perception either true or false reign supreme. He sees the people as a pawn, played and tossed by some power brokers towards a selfish end.
Few days ago, Nigeria went to the poll in an election that saw the incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan losing the race for a return ticket to the opposition candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari and in an unprecedented reaction that shocked the world, Mr. Jonathan conceded defeat saving Nigeria, West Africa and by extension the entire continent from going into flames.
With the emergence of General Buhari, the word on the street of Nigeria now is victory. The people seems to have found hope, placing upscale level of trust on the war veteran to make life better as soon as possible.
Indeed, the masses have cause to rejoice. The government of President Jonathan haven't had a direct bearing on the people on the street. He has shown lackadaisical attitude to the safety of the people, especially those in the North East and only woke up from slumber at a rather time too late. His leadership ability also shows one who isn't total in control of government, he shows traits of indecisiveness, more than needed patience, making the electorates get bored of his government.
But while the people continue to rejoice over what they termed 'Our votes, counts' it is imperative to state without holding back that the defeat of Goodluck Jonathan isn't the victory of the electorates. Yes, the people voted for a man of their choice but the question of who/what made that man their choice remains unanswered.

The need to have Mr. Jonathan out of Aso Rock became heightened on 31st August 2013 when seven Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party and the former Vice President walked out of the party's convention, hence forming the 'New PDP'. It should be noted that even though the opposition parties had already merged to form the All Progressive Congress (APC) the effect of an opposition party wasn't so impactful until the New PDP joined it. For those who understand a bit about Nigeria's presidential power play, some of the key factors that determine the making or marring of any occupant of that position is his relationship with the 'Five Pillars' of Nigeria namely General Theophilus Danjuma, Ibrahim Babangida, Emir of Kano, Olusegun Obasanjo and the Oil Mafias. Unfortunately for President Jonathan, all these individuals stood against him.

Some may argue that the records of General Buhari and his undoubted anti-corruption stand gave him the edge against the President but these individuals must ask themselves if these records were not in public domain when he contested and lost the election three times?

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for sixteen years has had the opportunity to govern the country not because it is well structured or so accepted but because the real owners of the country still controls the party. The moment these individuals lost their proxy grip, the party became a shadow of itself.

Democracy is about public perception, it is the ability to sell yourself to the electorates and make them believe in your plans but that's where it starts and ends. The ability of the people to understand, accept and believe in this messages resides exclusively with some set of individuals.
The March 28, 2015 presidential election wasn't won in polling booths and through ballot papers but at a round table meeting where the best of wine and foods were served.
General Muhammadu Buhari may seem to represent the desire of the electorates but that can only be proven with decisions he makes within the first few months of his administration.
This is a victory for democracy, it is a good step for politics but it isn't a victory for the people per say but rather a change of garment for the 'Five Pillars'.

Say no to negativity. We cannot forever dwell on "what if". Buhari has only just won the election. It's best we wait and pray he does the right thing and bring changes to our great country. I agree this country is ruled by some godfathers behind closed door, but we must stay focused and continue to strive for change. Someday we would grow and flush out dirty politics from our system and hopefully catch up with the western world. For now I'll suggest we stay hopefully instead of dwelling in negative assumptions. Give the man a chance first all ye "theorist" lol

No matter how this intelligent writer chooses to give meaning to the emergence of Buhari as the president,it still remain a victory for the people.Since we decided to choose the devil (In Soyinka's words) and our votes really counted ,its still the victory for the masses.
GMB is here to rule for 4yrs,the earlier we start seeing him as our president, the better for BP

God will bless his man! finally! This is why I am demanding a publicly signed contact with specific goals from the Buhari team or we are dead in the Water! the only good thing about this election is that Social media granted Nigerians Voice to opine. please use your voice to fear this cabal down. it was so easy for Jonathan to Concede because he would not have to deal with the brood of eternally thirsty vipers that Serve no other God but themselves. He found immense relief. He also wanted Nigerians to taste the fruit of their vote.

But we are here to watch. And I think this is the time for NIGERIANS to start watching the watcher. We must break free from their hold proxy as it is still it is a hold.

Dear Bolade, scholar on good governance my foot! You are one of the many problems we have in Nigeria but thank God for change! So your alleged 5 rulers of Nigeria hypnothesised the millions of Nigerians who voted GEJ out? Or did they decapacitate him from leading this nation corrupt free, cluelessly and from the shackles of the Niger Deltan militants? Your educational acquisitions and money spent on them should be considered wasted! Please you guys should stop all these charades, your attempts to suddenly paint GEJ as a sort of messiah will not stop the due process of investigating his economic excesses. Shame on you for trying to rubbish Nigerians noble decision to chose change and betterment of this great nation. I honestly hope the money you were paid to write this junk is worth it!

I repeat we are not celebrating Buhari here cos in the actual sense he wasn't supposed to win based on people,s choice

Anonymous said...

Unknown said...

some very strong points u struck there. the new govt will either play according to the dictates of these owners of nigeria or face situations worse dan wah the present administration experienced

Anonymous said...

Great one, we still have very on telling people. GEJ lost cos Obasanjo and IBB tuned against him.teamed up and removed him, they formed a great force, Obasanjo tore his card openly, ran GEJ down openly that caused the whole thing, not that Buhari is generally accepted, a lot in store for his supporters, they haven't seen anything

Unknown said...

What a wonderful write up. Food for thought. This is very true cos Jonathan and his minions lost favour in the sight of these powerful men and they thought they could defy and demystify their strong hold on d Nigerian state through votes amassed from d South-South and d South-East and bribe or buy their way out through d other geopolitical zones. If we really look at it, it was a battle of who was gonna be put to shame between Jonathan and Obasanjo, but d former lost out and towed d heroic line for an alibi as against being disgraced, mocked and molested( So much for heroism). The end result, d populace or d electorate are still shrowded in a dark cloud of illusion that black is black and white is white. This is a fact, the election was done before march 28th,the five pillars like he said connived against GEJ,the outcome of the election was decided in a round table meeting with plenty to eat and drink, jega played a major role in it,he helped them through the high numbers of registered voters in the northern states. Jonathan was just ignorant of the strenght of these pillars or rather he was tired of all the troubles of nigeria,so he didn't put as much efforts through strategies. One thing I know for sure is that gej has left his name in the book of history,he left with a good name,he left a HERO. God bless gej.

well thank God you said you are a political scientist so lets ask scientific questions:
1. What are the indices that make someone belong to the 5 pillars of Nigeria?

2. Is it inherited or self actualised?
3. what are the proofs of these ones being the pillars?
4. How many other scholars have arrived at that conclusion?
5. Should the five pillars choose to support a candidate like Ayo Fayose, FFK, Orubebe, Tompolo, Asari Dokubo or Gani Adams, will they win?

6. If your answer to 5 is no then your hypothesis needs to undergo further research.

7. What are your proofs that the 5 pillars supported Buhari?

since you are a lecturer, don't be in a haste to present document that still needs a lot of research and scientific evidence.

I appreciate your zeal to write get feedback and here it is, wait till your supposed five pillars support a miscreant and the such characters wins then you can Q.E.D.

Right now, the victory belongs to the people and democracy in Nigeria.

That said, I'll like to point out that even tho its government of, for and by the people, Democracy is not as transparent as it is on papers. This is so all around the world. Each country is run directly or indirectly by some "Very Important People". U can't deny the influence Warren Buffet and Bill Gates wud have on America.
What we need actually is government that is 70-80% fair to the people (since 100% is impossible)

Buhari's anti-corruption stance become more prominent over the years in the face of Jonathan's corruption stricken government. And the decadence of Jonathan's government has only helped in boosting more hope in Buhari's advocacy for a corruption free government. Let's be objective, this isn't about Buhari but the people's quest for progress in our nation.

True talk! One day we will hear about the huge amount of money these demon Generals spent on propaganda against Jonathan. One of them will confess on his death bed that there are no missing Chibok girls. It is well with Jonathan. I am waiting to see the "miracles" Buhari the pawn will perform. I am also watching the Tinubu/Buhari dance.

Illusion of democracy... Hmmm... Just like Loki said in Avengers 'freedom from the idea of freedom.' Well, I'd say even if though Buhari is obviously not the answer to our problems, he was the better choice for our democracy; for its growth and sustenance... So in that regard, I'd say Nigeria came out ahead...only time will tell about the rest. Nice write up. 1st of May loading...

And when you look at the boko haram issue that they almost crucified the president for, shekau is a Muslim and most definitely a northerner and Nigerian who maybe has a family in the north. Why did the northern rulers not plead with him or arrange to discuss with him on issues he was aggrieved about? I know they would have been able to do that. But northerners being who they are will never give up their own especially when the president is from south south. They kept blaming the president. It was all planned to frustrate jonathan's administration. Everything will be revealed in due time! GOD IS OMNISCIENT (HE knows and sees all things).

The new president elect must find shekau dead or alive and he must be punished for his deeds!

Anonymous 4:27, you spoke like a researcher! The 5 questions you gave him gave you out. Only people like you can see the holes in his biased write-up. As researchers will say...skewed analysis! Like you rightly said, his answers to your questions will determine the relevance of the trash written!

One of the five obviously paid you to make him feel important.

Unfortunately Nigerians are always blind to see when they are headed to hit a rock until they do. Whatever gave Nigerians the impression that their vote buhari in as president was only created by jonathan because their blood shed by the blood thirsty APC would have proved this write right. But a true leader jonathan has saved your blood from been shed and the so called buhari you call change would have caused your blood to be shed. Who is a true leader amongst this two. I support you whoever you writer are. I only pray Nigerians realise that they are the change they need and not buhari. Every Nigerian citizen should wake up and change themselves first and say no ethnicity racism in this country but see all ethnic tribes as one. Then we are on a course in the right direction. For now nigeria isn't ready for change yet. Buhari finally conceded to these political moguls which jonathan at some point as a true he is refused to dance to their tune of music and yet nigeria actually think they have voted for CHANGE. Ofcourse they have but NEGATIVE cHANGE!!!!

He just said it right! Exactly!!! without the support of those '5 pillars' Buhair wouldn't have won! they turned against Jonathan for reasons best known to him! Y'all there is no change! the 5 pillars will also influence Buhari! it's all a bunch of bulk-shit with the change chants!! that's why I'm not moved, I don't bother celebrating! I wonder at what stage will Nigerians open their eyes and see that it's all the same thing especially with all the people behind Buhari!!

You are right as the writer. Nice article. Which change is Buhari going to bring? We are watching. God bless Nigeria.
