Pics: The magnificent IBOM Stadium in Uyo set to launch tomorrow

The beautiful city of Uyo is the perfect setting for the opening of a new chapter in the history of sports in Nigeria. Come tomorrow Nov. 7, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godwin Akpabio, will lead the government and people of Akwa Ibom state in opening the Akwa Ibom International Stadium aptly nicknamed the Nest of Champions. See the amazing photos after the cut...

The truly amazing sporting edifice is an Olympic Sized stadium is a 30,000 capacity ultra modern complex that is already regarded as the best in the West African region and compared with South Africa’s Soccer city.

Modelled after the Allianz Arena in Germany, the home ground of reigning German Champions Bayern Munich, the Stadium boasts 4 -tier, covered, seating terrace,  all-natural grass, high-tech floodlights and security cameras, 36 emergency exits, bullet proof VVIP and VIP along with other ultra-modern facilities.

The stadium will be opened with a friendly match between long time rivals, Super Eagles of Nigeria and Black Stars of Ghana on Friday, November 7 at 3pm, with notable dignitaries from all over in attendance.

The problem is not building stadium or other things in Nigeria the problem is can they be maintained because Nigeria have a history of not having a culture of maintenance the don't know how to protect something for that to last longer. 5yrs from now if this stadium is not properly checked every year, it will all crumble and become useless.

Our problem isn't in the building of magnificent edifices.its in our low or non existent maintenance culture.also,I wonder how much was expended on paper and factually.

Beautiful as I must say! Every state should have one of this or something more superb. This kind of stuff helps community to grow... Most governors are just thieves .

Even if he has stolen public funds, he will be pardoned for this magnificent structure. I cannot say the same for many other state governors...but come to think of it...To whom much is given, much is expected. I believe the state receives billions monthly as an oil producing state...?
I hope the structure is maintained over time, or else...

LIBers pleasse oh! The name is Godswill not Godwill, and for the mumu's that think that this our edifice will not be managed in less than 5 years, bad belle's tell your governors to build una own, May it please you to know that Julius Berger Nigeria has signed another deal to maintain the stadium for a whooping 10years and good enough, they have been paid already... That's how to spend oil money for oil people, kudoos for Abians, Rivers, Deltans...even Bayelsans sef...after all dey get 89bn and have a population of 2m and do jst nothing.

All white elephant projects , they should concentrate on upgrading education and medical facilities. Schools are run down teachers are not paid and young people are joining boko haram and this governor is building a stadium. Misplaced priorities.

Nice sport infrastructure, will create a lot of jobs- Events staff,,security, ticket sellers etc business, resturants, cafes, gym mgt, and other concessionaires within the stadium complex , not to mention the publicity and communications oppurtunities.
Akwa Ibom Athletes will now have access to quality sports amenity to Horne their skills. and the oppurtunity to compete with the best around the world as this stadium facility will attract the best of the best.
What and excellent vision by an active governor. Kudos

my ten cents said...

For $96m, it is a good stadium befitting of a state or nation. For a state like Akwa Ibom in a nation like Nigeria, it is a misplacement or priorities. Granted that Akwa Ibom has the money to spend, the fact remains that there are many rural communities that need light, water, roads, and clinics (just the basics); There are schools that could use some of that money in terms of infrastructure and technological equipments; there are hospitals that need more doctors and paramedical staff. There are so many things with positive multiplier effects that one can invest $96m on, but the people of Akwa Ibom, it seems, have elected to go without badly-needed social amenities in place of a stadium.

Good luck to you all!
