Must read! Chimamanda Adichie writes on the anti-gay law

Article written by award winning writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie titled 'Why can’t he just be like everyone else?'  Find it below...
I will call him Sochukwuma. A thin, smiling boy who liked to play with us girls at the university primary school in Nsukka. We were young. We knew he was different, we said, ‘he’s not like the other boys.’ But his was a benign and unquestioned difference; it was simply what it was. We did not have a name for him. We did not know the word ‘gay.’ He was Sochukwuma and he was friendly and he played oga so well that his side always won.
In secondary school, some boys in his class tried to throw Sochukwuma off a second floor balcony. They were strapping teenagers who had learned to notice, and fear, difference. They had a name for him. Homo. They mocked him because his hips swayed when he walked and his hands fluttered when he spoke. He brushed away their taunts, silently, sometimes grinning an uncomfortable grin. He must have wished that he could be what they wanted him to be. I imagine now how helplessly lonely he must have felt. The boys often asked, “Why can’t he just be like everyone else?”

Possible answers to that question include ‘because he is abnormal,’ ‘because he is a sinner, ‘because he chose the lifestyle.’ But the truest answer is ‘We don’t know.’ There is humility and humanity in accepting that there are things we simply don’t know. At the age of 8, Sochukwuma was obviously different.  It was not about sex, because it could not possibly have been – his hormones were of course not yet fully formed – but it was an awareness of himself, and other children’s awareness of him, as different. He could not have ‘chosen the lifestyle’ because he was too young to do so. And why would he – or anybody – choose to be homosexual in a world that makes life so difficult for homosexuals?

The new law that criminalizes homosexuality is popular among Nigerians. But it shows a failure of our democracy, because the mark of a true democracy is not in the rule of its majority but in the protection of its minority – otherwise mob justice would be considered democratic. The law is also unconstitutional, ambiguous, and a strange priority in a country with so many real problems. Above all else, however, it is unjust. Even if this was not a country of abysmal electricity supply where university graduates are barely literate and people die of easily-treatable causes and Boko Haram commits casual mass murders, this law would still be unjust.  We cannot be a just society unless we are able to accommodate benign difference, accept benign difference, live and let live. We may not understand homosexuality, we may find it personally abhorrent but our response cannot be to criminalize it.

A crime is a crime for a reason. A crime has victims. A crime harms society. On what basis is homosexuality a crime? Adults do no harm to society in how they love and whom they love. This is a law that will not prevent crime, but will, instead, lead to crimes of violence: there are already, in different parts of Nigeria, attacks on people ‘suspected’ of being gay. Ours is a society where men are openly affectionate with one another. Men hold hands. Men hug each other. Shall we now arrest friends who share a hotel room, or who walk side by side? How do we determine the clunky expressions in the law – ‘mutually beneficial,’ ‘directly or indirectly?’

Many Nigerians support the law because they believe the Bible condemns homosexuality. The Bible can be a basis for how we choose to live our personal lives, but it cannot be a basis for the laws we pass, not only because the holy books of different religions do not have equal significance for all Nigerians but also because the holy books are read differently by different people. The Bible, for example, also condemns fornication and adultery and divorce, but they are not crimes.
For supporters of the law, there seems to be something about homosexuality that sets it apart. A sense that it is not ‘normal.’ If we are part of a majority group, we tend to think others in minority groups are abnormal, not because they have done anything wrong, but because we have defined normal to be what we are and since they are not like us, then they are abnormal. Supporters of the law want a certain semblance of human homogeneity. But we cannot legislate into existence a world that does not exist: the truth of our human condition is that we are a diverse, multi-faceted species. The measure of our humanity lies, in part, in how we think of those different from us. We cannot – should not – have empathy only for people who are like us.

Some supporters of the law have asked – what is next, a marriage between a man and a dog?’ Or ‘have you seen animals being gay?’ (Actually, studies show that there is homosexual behavior in many species of animals.) But, quite simply, people are not dogs, and to accept the premise – that a homosexual is comparable to an animal – is inhumane. We cannot reduce the humanity of our fellow men and women because of how and who they love. Some animals eat their own kind, others desert their young. Shall we follow those examples, too?

Other supporters suggest that gay men sexually abuse little boys. But pedophilia and homosexuality are two very different things. There are men who abuse little girls, and women who abuse little boys, and we do not presume that they do it because they are heterosexuals. Child molestation is an ugly crime that is committed by both straight and gay adults (this is why it is a crime: children, by virtue of being non-adults, require protection and are unable to give sexual consent).

There has also been some nationalist posturing among supporters of the law. Homosexuality is ‘unafrican,’ they say, and we will not become like the west. The west is not exactly a homosexual haven; acts of discrimination against homosexuals are not uncommon in the US and Europe. But it is the idea of ‘unafricanness’ that is truly insidious. Sochukwuma was born of Igbo parents and had Igbo grandparents and Igbo great-grandparents. He was born a person who would romantically love other men. Many Nigerians know somebody like him. The boy who behaved like a girl. The girl who behaved like a boy. The effeminate man. The unusual woman. These were people we knew, people like us, born and raised on African soil. How then are they ‘unafrican?’

If anything, it is the passage of the law itself that is ‘unafrican.’ It goes against the values of tolerance and ‘live and let live’ that are part of many African cultures. (In 1970s Igboland, Area Scatter was a popular musician, a man who dressed like a woman, wore makeup, plaited his hair. We don’t know if he was gay – I think he was – but if he performed today, he could conceivably be sentenced to fourteen years in prison. For being who he is.) And it is informed not by a home-grown debate but by a cynically borrowed one: we turned on CNN and heard western countries debating ‘same sex marriage’ and we decided that we, too, would pass a law banning same sex marriage. Where, in Nigeria, whose constitution defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, has any homosexual asked for same-sex marriage?

This is an unjust law. It should be repealed. Throughout history, many inhumane laws have been passed, and have subsequently been repealed. Barack Obama, for example, would not be here today had his parents obeyed American laws that criminalized marriage between blacks and whites.
An acquaintance recently asked me, ‘if you support gays, how would you have been born?’ Of course, there were gay Nigerians when I was conceived. Gay people have existed as long as humans have existed. They have always been a small percentage of the human population. We don’t know why. What matters is this: Sochukwuma is a Nigerian and his existence is not a crime.

CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE GOOFED, YET AGAIN: MY RESPONSE

Chimamanda Adichie’s response to the anti-gay law in Nigeria is not without some jaundiced and polarised thinking typical of Adichie. First, Adichie’s piece posted on Linda Ikeji’s blog reiterates the arguments championed by those of us who feel the anti-gay law is unjust. The law is reductive, inhuman, irrational, baseless and unwarranted. Adichie agrees to all of these charges. But on a different ground. She says that homosexuals are essentially, ontologically, naturally different from heterosexuals, but should be tolerated nonetheless. Adichie tells the fictional story of a boy called Sochukwuma (literal Igbo translation: Only God Knows). The boy is the type we call ‘effeminate boy’ in some parts of Nigeria. He is born an effeminate boy. And because he is born effeminate male – a fault he knows nothing about – he suffers the ill-treatment from people (heterosexuals) who do not understand why he is different. The question often raised by other boys over Sochukwuma’s difference is, “Why can’t he just be like everyone else?” Adichie remarks in response, “But the truest answer is ‘We don’t know.’ ”

As insightful as her dismissal of this unjust and unnecessary anti-gay law has been, Adichie perpetuates an idea that gay people are ontologically (at least sexually or as a matter of some unknowable birth condition) different from heterosexuals or other people. I find this thinking reductive. First, I do not think that being a gay man has anything to do with a man being somewhat effeminate. Adichie should realise that there are ‘macho’ gay men, as well as ‘feminine’ lesbians. Meanwhile, has anyone noticed that the discussion on gay practice in Nigeria has mostly focused on men, not lesbians? Why? I hope we won’t come back tomorrow to discuss a marginalisation of women in the recognition of gay men, but not gay women? Anyway, to my point, effeminate men or masculine women do not signify homosexual traits. Nor is it rational to claim that there is an ontological difference between homosexuals and heterosexuals, a difference only known by God who has created people the way they are. To create such an unnecessary distinction is to be unaware of the harm it does. Let’s not forget that there are so many bisexuals – people who enjoy sex with same-sex or with opposite-sex partners. There are many varieties of sexual behaviour and pleasure the same way there are varieties of food. We do not say that Chika is different from Chima because Chika dislikes Abacha but loves to eat beans. Chima hates the smell of beans but can have Abacha for breakfast. They may be different in their attitude to food, but not in being humans.

I think that part of what we must ensure to do is to whittle down the essentialising claims that accompany sexual habits. I want to believe that no human beings are ontologically any specific thing. If I am heterosexual, it is not because I cannot be homosexual. It may be because heterosexual behaviour is fulfilling to me. We have to begin to understand sex differently and stop defining the human essence based on sexual habits. Tolerance should not be based on just an acceptance of the difference in others. Tolerance is in parts an understanding and acknowledgement of a shared human essence. We can successfully champion the values of tolerance when we have understood that the essence can only be our humanity, but not our habits, our tastes and ideologies. And definitely not our sexualities!

This is a fine piece. A young woman so eloquently pointed out her view which I totally reject from my own view point. This is Africa, a land where tradition is regarded. Here is Nigeria, a land so underdeveloped. For development sake, we don't need this. A child who has just started walking does not put his hands in his pockets. If we start doing same sex in less than a century of existence, do you think we will achieve a great Nigeria? We are talking about a country which cannot even send all her inhabitants to school, a country which cannot provide stable electricity for just a week. A country which does not have roads leading from here to there.
People that engage in such act are usually deprived of one thing or the other ( maybe a heart break). But I want to tell you that those people only need one thing, a psychiatrist. We all have our 'madnesses' but those that quickly strip and run to the garbage dumps are the only ones considered as mad. Anything that is not normal is abnormal. So abnormal people will see an ALIENIST.

A's a matter of fact an igbo person will do anything for fame or money so Chimamanda I am not shocked at ur useless writeup becos u want western support. I want to ask why polygamy is a crime abroad? If they don't accept polygamy we do in some parts of Nigeria ,have we ever shoved it down their throats to accept our view on polygamy? NO! So then y must we accept homosexuality or d likes. We abhor it period! Freaking let us be! U talk about dis Somto.... Watever his name is like we ve not seen his likes who grew up n took their proper place as men in the Society. then again a freaking faggot couple get married sacreligiously and want to adopt kids they can't have. Y?! Leave d innocent kids alone becos u neva planned to have one in d first place otherwise u would ve made a proper choice. Very soon paedophiles will agitate for equal rights. Then again y is incest now a sin? Maybe a father could marry his duta. Pls fellow Nigerians Society has a role to play in the lives of its citizens becos families form d society take a clue from China where even the number of children a couple can have is controlled hence u see that Asia is a threat to dis ruthless world power USA becos they are disciplined. Rubbish! I am warning all Nigerians to beware of the likes of Chimamanda becos she has drunk d evil wine and has been sent by these ever domineering westerners to reduce our population and spread diseases which will keep us in constant check as a means of economic slavery! The president is to be commended becos he has done the necessary. I would rather not have constant light, good roads and no gays around than ve d opposite. Chimamanda lastly I warn u to stop dis useless propaganda becos some people are really angry!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Miss Adichie, I do not think that we can legislate homosexuality out of existence. That law will probably make little difference to what people chose to do or not do. However, is homosexuality normal? Should it be encouraged? Is it something you'll encourage or discourage of a loved one? If the practice of homosexuality keeps spreading at the rate it's doing now, would its effect on our societies in the next twenty to thirty years be negative or positive? Please think on these things. God bless you.

In the bible
When they brought the woman caught in adultery to Jesus. He said' let him without sin cast the first stone.' People have been going about and acting like homosexuality is the ONLY sin. Yes its a sin but so is lying fornication adultery, etc. I think we should hate the sin and show love to the sinner! How else can they change? Instead of judging, I think we should spend more time praying for these ones and not beating them up verbally and literally! I really dont think the reasoning elucidated by the Chimamanda is actually valid, so should we go about making cases for different sexual offenders? Cos believe me, I'm sure there is another story somewhere in the universe about a young boy who at an early age discovered he loved babies in a different
way and he ended up becoming a paedophile as an adult. #prayer &love#

What is she talking about is it because you stayed in western world that you uallowed unreasonable thought, trends of sexual perversion blot your right thinking or what, are you saying they should further allow sexual immoral decadence by allowing men putting there manhood inside each other and sucking each other manhood, tell me is that what you call minority difference or what do you call it? Is it not because of same grossed sexual perversion that God in His power destroyed Sodom and Gomora, are you a true Christian at all? We have plenty of seduction and sexual immorality between men and women and lesbianism already in you women blood and now you are saying they should not put a stop to this rapid disease of men putting there prick inside each other anus, what has western culture done to you?

Even Sodom and Gomora was a minority in the world those days and there immorality offended GOD that He destroyed them with liquid fire and you are saying they should allow minority's sin of sexual immorality to litter our streets before they do something about it.

Many of you have been blind folded by her grammar analysis and debatable veteran, you are not
saying the truth but complimenting her, birds of same feathers, I hope you are not deep in lesbianism or bisexuality?

This is a very serious matter,I want you to know this,my G.O says:if GOD want men to sleep with each other HE would have found a place to put Virginian in Adam's body So there would have been need for Eve to exist and if it had
been so, yourself wouldnt have been there writing this trying to convince us what GOD has condenmed or hate already

If you are true child of GOD open your Bible to Leviticus 18 read it from the beginning to end, then go to Romance1 read from 23 to 32

When you know the truth the truth shall sent you free. And stop talking about minority differences When you are propaganda sins especially the one GOD hate So much

Thanks

So in years to come what chimamanda is saying is that when there are same sex marriages in future. A little child who may have been born through ivf will call two females mummy or two males daddy n mummy of what?. Its like people have not understood the gravity of what this will become in years to come. The essence of humanity would have been misplaced and this is a sin against humanity. Think of rape as a case. I can't imagine a young boy teenager reporting that he may have been raped through his ass hole. For God sakes what kind of world are we creating, now its not about being African or not. I think its up to every individual who was born as a male and rightly knows that because he has a male organ should man up n change his mentality to accepting what the creator has made him. Have u thought that it could be a psychological problem. I remember being a tom boy. I dropped the habit years ago because I decided to.I'm proud to say that I'm a agile lady now but as for this"gay law" I'm sorry its going to become a natural disaster in the nearest future. Let us think about it Africans say NO!!! (Linda)

Chimandas write up is a good one ,almost got me confused on dis gay rights. Pls whoeva knows ha shuld tell ha dat dere is a difference btw gender hormonal imbalance n gayism. That Sochukwuma behaved like a girl doesnt mean he is a gay. Secondly, from d bible perspective, yes there are other sins but this sin is classified as abnormal n an abomination Lev 18:22 n Rom 1:26,27.
Thirdly, she shouldnt make us look like illiterates because we approve of d anti-gay rights. There is notin literate about accepting it, these r abnormalities(abominations) dat should b found only in animals just like d examples she gave."Animals" are no literates.
But, in as much as its not very ok for d govt to criminalise it, its the only way this disease eating up d western countries can b kept from being endemic in our Nigeria.

Good intellectual write-up, however, I disagree with Chimamanda that this should not be criminalized, a country has a write to decide what would be criminalized or not. I love gays in the sense that Jesus came to redeem all souls. But for those of us who believe that there is a higher power than us (God) and believe in the Genesis of existence, we know an Eve was made for Adam. In any case, the bible says, "we may be in the world but we are not of this world." I submit to human laws only to the extent that they do not conflict with biblical laws and principles.

The truth is because Chiamanda is celebrated people take everything she says as the best. I think he has just spoken rubbish, again my own views here. One statement that struck me was that homo sexuality does not harm the society, she has lied. I dont want my kids to grow up witnessing homosexuality publicly. The same way smoking has been banned to protect non smokers, please homo sexuality should be banned atleast publicly to protect our kids. I would not want to loose my kids to the society. In this world there should be some control if not people will do whatever they like in the name of human rights. We talk about human rights and consents then why cant 2 consenting adults make love in a shopping mall? its that control we are talking about. We need to draw the line somewhere. Chiamanda confirmed that the homosexuals have not asked for marriage yet in nigeria but that is how it starts. Now the UK is or is trying to force the church to wed the gays. I cant understand why. chiamanda please be aware it is not yet acceptable in USA, as a matter of fact its legal is just 19 states out of 50 states.

My final advise would be for you to concerntrate on your novels etc else you will begin to loose your celebrated popularity soon with the rubbish you have recently been writing. You should be objective in your thinking rather than been one sided.

It is a serious problem. The question is what do we do about it?? Don't come here to tell me that people are born gay or lesbian, it is not their fault and all. Rather tell me what we should do to prevent or stop the ills that come with it!

God help us but if being gay was okay,God and His Angels wouldn't have got the men of Sodom and Gomorrah blind for demanding to have sex with men.Jusyt saying from what I read in the Bible.

My very read Chimamanda, Bible remains a basis for us in choosing how we live our life. It did commended fornication, adultery and divorce thus, classifying them as sin, but Homosexuality is an abominable sin just as wanton killing of the innocent. Criminalizing such act has only saved Nigeria from the wroth of God. As evident in the incensed aggressive weather in the west

All these people quoting Adam and Eve and Adam and Steve... Keep in mind that not all of the Bible is based on fact. Some of it is MYTH and LEGEND and if the Greeks had taken over the world, you would be talking of Zeus and Hera! And please when educated people are talking, uneducated people should shut up, including those insulting Chimamanda #justbecauseyouwenttoschooldoesntmeanyouareducated (longest hashtag ever!)

WOW! CHIAMANDA HAS LOST IT!!! THOUGHT SHE WAS SMART!!! Just by saying that the Bible is a guide to live our personal lives but it is by no means what we use to make laws. That just shows how Unenlightened she is. Do not Kill, Do not Steal, are these not in the BIble. Are there not laws against murder and stealing????
SHE HAS LOST IT!! CHIAMANDA YOU NEED JESUS, JUST LIKE ALL YOUR GAY FRIENDS!!!

I like your articulation and I also agree with many, if not all, of the arguments you make.
The idea of homosexuality is a matter of personal beliefs etc. and I agree that it makes no sense for it to be criminalised. I am Christian, and I can confidently say that Christianity preaches love for homosexuals in spite of their sexual preference which is still regarded as a sin. Even the Christian response would not be to criminalise homosexuality.

That said, I'm really curious about how personal, religious values find their way into our legislation. In Ghana as well, "homosexuality is criminal" as our President recently confirmed. A lot of the time, the basis of this legislation is the president and majority religion's value. What happens when the next president does not profess the same belief? How is such legislation even fair for citizens of that country who do not share such religious beliefs?

Anonymous said...

Also, to all those attacking Adichie: she makes NO argument that homosexuals are ontologically different from heterosexuals. The only difference is a sexual preference, which is essentially a choice that every individual has the right to.
What's the basis of these attacks?

Unknown said...

"Some animals eat their own kind, others desert their young. Shall we follow those examples too?" She just shot herself in the foot with this statement because she was earlier trying to make an argument that some animals are indeed gay..... So it's contradictory to say some animals are gay and then turn around to say, should we act like them? Plus, somchukwu's(or whatever his name) hormones may not have formed, but when they did, his sexual preference was 'men'...plus I know loads of guys that display similar
oga-playing and hip-swaying mannerisms who are very much straight... (it's not in mannerisms...at the end of the day, homosexuality boils down to sex...JUST SEX)Homosexuality is not suddenly normal because our "Americanah" darling says it is... But intelligently written still...

this whole thing is simply a matter of common sense. Chimamanda shows buckets of it. one doesn't have to like gay people or support their lifestyle. but there's no need to endorse their persecution.

I am disappointed on Ngozi's analysis. This is a very very shallow Analysis from someone that is known to take the time to analyze and report issues. Very disappointed.

Chimamanda fails to understand that America got to it's position on gay marriage by first removing it from the DSM(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) as a mental disorder. Presently it has now gone a step further to redefine marriage as to not being between a man and a woman rather between two consenting adults. Some states where citizens voted to protect the traditional definition of marriage are seeing their constitutional voting rights squashed. This whole gay marriage saga has opened a huge Pandora box. Schools now encourage children as little as 4 who feel they are In the wrong body to use the bathroom of choice in school. That is to say, if a boy feels like a girl, he is allowed to use the girls bathroom. Here in America homosexuals make up 7
% of the population yet they make up 70% of all new STD cases. The medical community have been silenced but few still speak to the fact that the anus is not meant for penetration, the vagina is. Health complications arising from anal penetration cannot be over emphasized. I am saddened because these people need help and not manipulation.
Equating gay marriage with interracial marriage is appalling. This is because interracial marriage had nothing to do with redefining marriage as being between a man and a woman. It only discriminated against a white person marrying a black person and that was discrimination. Redefining the meaning of marriage by governments who did not institute marriage in the first place is incomprehensible.
I believe that the Nigerian government took this step as a precautionary measure before they are faced with the problems here in the United States.

One thing about Nigerians is our act of condemnation. I wonder sometimes is it in our culture or religion but sometimes I feel our act of condemnation is something we got from our parents.
Many parents only told their kids the dos and don'ts without explaining to them the reason behind it. Hence the kids grow up to know, two things do not do this/that and do this/that without properly investigating the reason behind these stuffs, in respect, the kids grows up to become adults and pass the sense to his/her own kids too. Therefore, acts of condemnation is passed from one generation to another.

I have read a couple of comments now and I am really disappointed at some individuals response to the writer. By tagging the writer of this column a fool, stupid and all sorts of abusive words, has that by anyways proven your point or supported your argument?

Having lived in London for a couple of years I have learned how in some ways you can express yourself without being abusive, disparaging or derogative. Is there anyone here who would like to be called a fool or stupid or some other kind of abusive word because of he/she is try to express his/her opinion?
If the opinion doesn't work for you, you can decide not to say anything. Rather the using abusive words. Abusive words have long psychological effects and you do not know what kind of effect it might have on the person you are using it for.

Now to the gay issue, I have said this before and I will say it again. All sins are equal, gay, lesbian, liars, murderers, fornicators, adulterers. The bible said these people will not enter his kingdom. In addition, the bible made it clear that all sins are disobedience to his words. So if anyone lives by the Bible and judges by the Bible as his/her basis for his morality, then all fornicators, adulterers and young teenagers in yours neighborhood having sex should be condemn to the same punishment as the gay.

Therefore if this can not be done i.e. to punish all sexual immorality committee equally, and some are forgiven while the other is not. Then let us quickly learn to follow what the same Bible preaches that above all laws, "LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF" be it gay, lesbian, the pregnant teenage girl, the armed robber, the thiefy politician and everybody around you. I rest my case.

Reacting to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s recent article on Gay rights.
Live and let’s live: egbe bere ugo bere nke si ibe ya ebene ya gosi ya ebe oga ebe is a popular Igbo adage which shows how peaceful, accommodating and tolerant the republican Igbo nation is. Now the Igbo nation is also a progressive nation that believes in anoro ofu ebe ekili mmuo. Without sounding cynical or hateful I stand to present my own testament. Though a Christian, I will not take the Christian view point, I don’t even wish to argue along religious lines, but mind lines, yes mind lines.
After my sister told me and I subsequently read the recent submission by Chimamanda Adichie, I decided to sample the opinion of some sages about homosexuality in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s Nigeria, surprisingly the answer I got is that these things were never heard of. So it might be that these traits never existed or were seriously inhibited by those bearing them. Taking into cognizance the books written on Igbo nation or Africa in extension during the pre-colonial, colonial or early post colonial times I never discovered such labels like homosexuals or lesbians. If Achebe believed that such existed he might have hinted or suggested that Nwoye, Okonkwo’s son in Things Fall Apart might be gay. Olaudah Eqiano might have also suggested it in his book Equiano’s Travels if it existed or maybe it was even a taboo to habour such inclinations. True we have Akaliogoli’s, Ofogoli’s, and even Efuluefu’s but society knew how to stamp out such evil and ugly traits.
Now the adage that emanated from this gross abuse of egbe bere ugo bere …which Ngozi Adichie advocates and celebrates in her submission is : egbe bere ugo bere nke si ibe ya ebene si nku kwaya. We believe in preservation of life, we also believe that any law or laws that go contrary to the normal way of living that negates human survival and preservation should be done away with. Some people who replied to the article said that our fore fathers are ignorant, others say: quit insulting Chimamanda. I stand to say that an evil behavior is evil no matter how cosmetic or trendy we want to sound.
Some people say that there is nothing like evil but absence of good. Our sexuality should be used for good and not absence of good. I appreciate the position of the Nigerian government. I can even say it is one of the boldest things that our leaders have done due to the sole reason that we are defending that which we hold sacred- life. Once we allow this ugly trend that is accelerated by irresponsible minds to continue, then the world as we know it might cease to exist. Humanity must make serious effort to refocus on our spirituality as a way of attacking this aberration in human behavior.
Now follow me on this mind journey to a place and time where the gay is allowed to marry and adopt children. Where people are proud to say “do you know my gay son is getting married tomorrow”? With this might come the attendant consequences of halting procreation? This is the work of HE that is the enemy of creation. It is true that we should not judge, but it is also a bigger truth to speak against evil. Homo sexuality is the absence of good and will remain so and anybody who plays Pontius Pilate or Judas Iscariot to this burning issue must face the consequences. Shalom. Ikuku uzo MMuo.

Nice write up...and looking at it from your angle, you've made reasonable points and yes the country should focus on more important things at hand and religious wise there is no sin greater than anoda and we know the nation is guilty of a lot more BUT also we need to recognise that the only reason why nigeria isnt parading gays on the streets today eventhough everyone knows they've been in existence as long as anything else is because the society frowns at it and this act is what has kept it at bay and while i agree that imprisoning them might be unjust and might not solve any issue, we also need to think of the society which i believe is your supposed concern, we all know that environmental influence plays a key role in human development and if this becomes a thing of choice, then the incidence gets higher and the higher the incidence the more likely to influence our children and then you cant blame the country. it is true that this could be genetic due to the low levels of sex homornes in some but instead of using that as an excuse that u av no choice, why not look for a solution, e.g you've heard of people getting hormone treatments which is used by gays to be more feminine or masculine, whichever they think they are, now u found that u act more like a girl than a boy that u are, how about u seek treatment to correct whats wrong, just as u would in any other disease, than seek treatment to enhance whats wrong in your body.....my point is however we choose to look at this, i'm not saying the law is justified or not but a problem isn't always in the problem but in our attitude towards the problem.

Nicely articulated. Looking back at my youthful days, I actually practiced homosexualism with my friends (I was less than 10); the resultant effect of watching x-rated movies and inadequate parental guidance. Thank God it was only that one day, I cant imagine a way of life like that now. I remember another incidence where a young girl (less han 10 yrs) tried to sexual arouse my friend. It is not true that a child's hormones are not formed. The musical videos, adverts, half naked women on the street do not help matters. Parents should be held responsible for what their children turn out to be. This whole gay right advocacy simples reminds us that the world is coming to an end... our world resemble Sodom and Gomorrah of bible times. let's be careful with what we advocate for.

Interesting piece madam, could fetch you another award or international recognition but we should thread carefully! While growing up we also knew children who would stone lizards, strangle hens and basically enjoy killing as a game, maybe their rights to choice of play should be considered and we can watch if it would translate to taking human lives.
One thing is clear WE ARE AFRICANS!!!!!!!!! There's a limit to our craving for Western culture, as a mother I know EVIL COMMUNICATION corrupts good manners. Am bothered about what the next generation perceive of their society.
No one has said you cannot be GAY! Must you leave here? Go there! It's as simple as that.
Like you said while growing up I didn't watch same sex displaying affection on the streets, am elated to know my children don't have to either!
Same way we do not want to see old men keeping our children at home, we do not want people opening luring our children into homosexuality.
Masterpiece you have here but note that if absolute freedom is given on human cravings, the world will not be a better place in the future.
Let's fight to preserve WHO WE ARE! WHAT WE STAND FOR! Nigerians let's have an identity, no more business as usual. Throw away the copy and paste attitude we have towards the western culture.
Majority carries the vote, I stand for the archaic values that have formed us, that you Chimamanda have written so much about and it has brought you a unique form of greatness and difference amongst your peers internationally.
The labors of our heroes past shall not be in vain.
Nigerians don't blend in homosexuality, Stand out!

Chimamanda you throw so much time on a non existent issue in a 3rd world country where children die of hunger everyday? Where people are forced into prostitution everyday? Did you bother to do an analysis on why most Nigerian youths have turned gay?
Girl they are hungry, give most of our homosexuals a better lifestyle and see them revert.
Channel your influence on our nation's greater problems.
We are too hungry to start stitching up men and operating on women who misuse toys.
Ps: Consider some community projects

The problems that come with homosexuality is something we do not have the framework to solve just like the west too. It is still the same unsolved problems of polygamy, adultery etc. I do not support it and I feel we have more serious issues to deal with. I live in a country that support gay than any other human being, it's so obvious that they are using the next generation like Chimamanda for an experimental disaster. No one knows what this outcome will be, "freedom they call it". Chimamanda, Poor you and your bind followers, westerns are distorting your generation you call it freedom

PLs don't be deceive by Chimamanda sweet tale, this is what she is train to do, to make a story sweet just for her benefit, not to direct your life. The western people that support her are the ones that buy are books not you, she care about her money not your life, gay issue is popular and if she is against it , it will benefit her for now. However, we know that the western like using black people for the wrong doing, just as Obama was pushed to support it, now he talk like a drunker without no respect. Chimamanda have chosen a part to fall don't fall with her, all you fools that can't see the lie in the tale.

Chimamanda, gay is not a thin of a birth but of a CHOICE, Sochukwuma being feminine does not mean he was a gay, or desire to sleep with men. Please miss writer, stop your lie. A man having a wrong sexually desire is different from looking feminine, Moreover I thought you are knowledgeable enough to know that the western world only love to share they bad seeds among others.

Chimamanda, because the white men teach us how to read and write does not means we have to imitate their wrong ways of life's.. "Yes we all know that they are in mess and they don't know how to fix, they just act as if it is beautiful unit we they have experiment a generation"

The living word of God says the elite will be deceived at this end time "obvious Chimamanda is among the deceived". Please don't deceive others as you have been deceived. Your writing gift was not intended for this kind of foolish writing. May God deliver your loss mind.

Chimamanda Please, since you know why this people DESIRE to sleep with their fellow men or ladies? The word I use is desire "if you know the meaning" because they're not born that way. Please help us ask them why are they using RAINBOW as their flag, a sign that God sworn by, and why are they focusing themselves into Christianity. Pls go and read the book of revelation and write about the truth, the roll of the Rainbow .

All those sin you listed from the Bible "prostitution murderer fornication etc" there is a redemption for all this sin, please miss writer go and read the Holy book and tell me where there is a redemption for gay, Or have you found any region in the world that support such act.

The rules and law of the western world where all from the word of God. Chimamanda, if you can read as you can write the USA dollar is written "IN GOD WE TRUST", so also it's clear that they are far from God, please Nigerian is not perfect just like the other countries but it's better to walk our way towards God than walking back ward like the US. The people that are passing the law in the western world are not born by a gay parent but they are using your generation for a test.

Chimamanda, making the wrong right is the dumbest thing anyone should support. Please if your brain is still functioning.... please mention one people that was given birth to by a gay or lesbian? Can't you see the devilish spirit behind it is affecting you.

Chimamanda should be the LAST writer to advise we attach a punishment to adultery or dare to compare it with homosexuality or even place any write ups that might bring the word adultery up! Am sure she knows what am talking about!!!!

That aside, remember the one wife theory came with religion to Africans, we are yet to perfect it and we suggest to legalize homosexuality?

The Government had every right to step into this issue to ensure it never becomes a problem in our society.

If they kept quiet then we might one day find them expecting to walk into the registries for marriage!

I commend the Government for this one and use this medium to commend also the Lagos state Government on the smoking law.

Chimamanda as a fellow Igbo girl I have waited for years for you and Linda to seriously champion the fight against calling certain people OSU (unclean) over crimes that were committed by generations before. But none of you have dared to touch that topic yet you are flogging matters that can extinct humanity if not properly approached.

I understand you're both 'business women' before anything else and dollar is stronger than the Naira but please put into high considerations sensitive matters that steer up questions on your persons, characters, interests and concerns before you shoot.

people are so stupid its getting annoying..chimamanda is so right...the issue here is not supporting homosexuality the issue here is criminalizing it..you can refuse to marry them and define your laws to mean marriage between a man and a woman...the issue is you cannot call them criminals cos they are homosexual and send them to jail, that is utterly wrong and not democratic.....

It has been noticed that some serial killers start mistreating and killing small animals in their childhood, should the law against murder be repealed, because they can't help it? People perish for lack or knowledge... In fact stupidity should be accompanied with 6+3+3+4 years in prison
From chimanandaz article she has neither condemned nor appraised d act of being gay.... Being gay is just as much wrong and sinful as having inappropriate thoughts towards someone, stealing, fucking girls & boys we aren't married to, bearing false witness just cos u hate d person, divorcing ur husband or wife just cos ur tired of fucking the same person & u want to explore, dishonouring ur parents, insulting someone, getting angry at someone(1Samuel 15v23) etc and that is all this fine writer has written abt.
We commit a million and one sins that the bible has reproached in different verses & yet some1 can come out and give word to a "so called homosexual evildoer"
Then with this on grounds or wrong doings, . I should move a motion that would lead to a bill being passed on 1) immorality, which has by all means been proved wrong in d bible- this time 14years in holding wouldn't be d case, any man or woman suspected or caught to be immoral, kissing, stroking, admiring, pressing, licking or sucking etc a man or lady that they are not married to, shall be hanged by his penis if it be a man & by her breasts is it be a lady & this time this law would NOT & should NOT have a limiting clause like "death for such defendant can only be overlooked if his wife is wicked to him or if her husband uses her as a punching bag" 2) divorce- any woman or man that gets married to a divorced person be it knowingly or otherwise shall be put to DEATH, 2b) adultery- (proverbs 6v 24-33 etc) any woman or man who commits adultery whether by false accusation or being caught red handed, shall be shot in d stomach & left under the rain to bleed to death, 3) any person found guilty of stealing be it millions (in d case of high officials & criminalgod fathers) or bread to say d least, his phalanges shall be cut of & every penny must be retrieved or if not retrieved he shall be jailed for life & allowed to be raped several times & also he who has raped shall be shot at d back with an AK 47 4) any one who as much as forgets to greet his father or mother in d morning even by phone calls shall be flogged 39 times(honour ur father & mother for dis is d 1st commandment in heaven) 5) anyone who kills with an intent, his/her hands shall be cut of by short sleeve & legs shall be nailed upside down to a tree & left to bleed under d sun.... These and many more should we all face when we go contrary to what the bible says & at this rate d face of d earth would have only 1000 people left by feb.14th 2015. Amen

Chimamanda,
Thanks for shading light on this new anti gay law in Nigeria and putting a face to the effect. People are usually afraid of what they don't understand. Twins used to be killed, remember. It was a curse to have twins. Now they are a blessing from Gog. Laws are meant to protect all. Like gays or not, they are here to stay. My biggest fear is people taking the laws into their hands and meting out their own form of justice under this guise. God please
protect ALL Nigerians

Respect and Admire for this article. PS she's married...to a man so stop the hate. It may be a sin but definitely not a crime. Remind me again why consenting adults are criminals but men can marry helpless little girls and go scot free. You guys should stop screaming culture this and that. This culture has not taken us anywhere and Nigeria is a secular national for those screaming religion...

No research has proven that gay is a genetic issue, it's more a learned act!

Chimamanda is right to the extent that Homosexuality is a sin but should not be criminalized. This law is diversionary especially at this time that our nation is approaching a cross road. This law is not what Nigerian are expecting as dividend of democracy? what good will it do to our society if all the homosexuals are arrested and imprisoned, will it reduce corruption in Nigeria, will it reduce unemployment, will it reduce the violence in the North, tell me.

For a country so religious its surprising this should be an issue!most Christians know the bible so well, we know what's sinful, what can send one to hell etc but we forget as true Christians we should keep Jesus's number one commandment, love thy neighbour as thy self. If God should mark our sins who will stand? There is no law stopping adults from marrying children that don't even have a voice but now there is one against two consenting adults.we back what we want with religion and condemn what we don't understand with the same religion, slave owners used the bible to justify their action for this hidoues inhumane act, since it affected every black person, we see it a clean cut racism. Now it affects a minority we segregate and condemn because we don't understand it, There're a lot of sinful acts in the world and like most of them let God be the judge that's why there is One. For those of you condemning the writer of this article, everyone is entitled to an opinion, share urs and move on it must not be accepted by all. Yes the law has passed and like every law it can be overtuned because it's made for the people.if slavery was never abolished you'll still be hiding away in a cave to afriad to make babies that might be taken away from you. Man's inhumanity to man must stop, we should stand for human equality, you don't have to be gay.

This is amongst the most articulated and well-thought of post I've read regarding this issue especially from a Nigerian. Why do people keep using the word "practicing gay"? For christ sake it's not a flipping religion- you don't practise sexuality. I do have a number of gay colleague here in the UK and just like we are comfortable with who we decide to fall in love with. They also have every right in the book to do the same. Some of you might not like or approve of it but there's nothing you can do about it - Just pray that you don't have your kids that walks up to you and say Daddy/mummy am in love with a Man/Woman...Until then..I rest my case

Y'all supporting the aniti gay law are all dumb. You are not enlightened. Go n make research on child developmental psychology maybe u'll have an idea why some people turn gay. No one chooses to be be gay. Oh and am sure one of ur kids will turn gay, maybe u'll kill him/her when he/she does. Brainless Nigerians.

Romans 1:18-27 - For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

BUT REALLY AND TRUELY HOW DOES WHO YOU f****k AFFECT THE LIFE OF OTHERS IN A SOCIETY IF IT ISNT PURE HYPOCRISY. ITS OKAY NOT TO LEGALIZE GAY MARRIAGE, THATS UNDERSTANDABLE. ALSO NOT GIVING GAY PEOPLE THE RIGHT FOR ADOPTION IS STILL UNDERSTANDABLE, BUT MAKING IT A CRIMINAL OFFENCE AND PUTTING A SENTENCE OF 14YEARS TO ANYONE WHO IS GAY AND ANOTHER SENTENCE TO ANYONE WHO DOESNT IDENTIFY WHO IS GAY IS JUST STUPIDLY INSANE. BESIDES DO DEY THINK PUTTING THESE PEOPLE I JAIL WILL STOP THEM FROM F****ING EACH OTHER?? THIS GOVERNMENT IS JUST PURE DUMB. AND THERES GONNA BE WAR SOON COS SOME IDIOTS WILL TAKE LAW INTO THIER HANDS TO DEHUMANIZE THESE GAY PEOPLE.. ABEG THIS IS JUST SAD.

True talk Chimamanda. Until someone can prove that no one can be born gay, then we should just leave them alone. The promulgation of this law has shown how inhumane we can be as a country, how insensitive and selfish we are as a people. This is the reason why Boko Haram insurgents can, in your words embark on casual murders, and we all continue our daily ventures like nothing has happened. I am guilty of this too, but I will not keep quiet. I will talk about i, say to any one that wishes to listen - The anit-gay law in Nigeria is utter BS!
We are quick to quote the Bible when it comes to this 'gay mater' but we aren't quick to hand out jail terms to people who fornicate, steal, publicly deceive in the name of 'church', masturbate, murder, commit felonies, the damn list is endless.....so I ask, what is it about this gay issue?

I can't say more...it's just sad.

@ Adieche, Ure blessed, according to the bible, sin is sin and there is no big or small sin, so, anyone who commits adultery or divorces his or her spouse is a sinner... but why isn't there a law passed against divorce... or is divorce "African"? i think its high tym Nigeria get its priorities straight.

Unknown said...

Preach!

Unknown said...

And I suppose the same law should apply to furnicators, adulterers, child molesters ant etc... My friend, every unrighteousness is a sin.

Unknown said...

It is an xtain thing and not a Christain thing my dear. Our custom is more corrupt than homosexual acts. This is all a distraction. There is no justification to any sin. There are adulterers and furnicators and child molesters running the streets and ever apiam way of Nigeria and Africa. So at the end of the day, every sinner will end up at the same hell sharing the same vicinity.

Unknown said...

You should also ask for forgiveness. God ordered us not to hate any of His creations. Do not use the name of God In vain

Unknown said...

She is a married woman

Unknown said...

Good point my dear. But spit not on anyone for their actions rather encourage them to see things from different perspectives. No one can serve two masters at the same time. It is either they are for their custom and against God or they are for God and against custom. God is a God of the just and unjust. He shows mercy to both community that is why He is an awesome God.

@willadebo i think your writeup simply makes more sense than the chinamanda's (from a critical point of view). i Respect and love her person so much beyond her comprehension. Laws are meant to maintain sanity and guide our social existence. the last thing we need now are people creating an alternative form of sexual choices to our unborn children. Trust me, I know what being a victim of gay pressure means to someone whose mind is not made up. So many guys on the street offering thier butts for Money...it makes no sense.
This law isn't a priority for Nigeria but before it becomes a priority, lets give nature, normalcy and sanity a chance

SAYING THAT SOMEONE WAS BORN GAY IS LIKE SAYING THAT SOMEONE WAS BORN TO BE AN ARMED ROBBER, A PROSTITUTE, A CHEAT, A LIAR. YOU LEARN ALL THESE. THE ONLY THING YOU WERE BORN TO BE IS EITHER A MALE OR A FEMALE. THERE IS A REASON WHY GOD CREATED US LIKE THAT. ANY OTHER THING YOU LEARN AND WHATEVER IS LEARNT, CAN BE UNLEARNT. IT IS ONLY PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO REGARD FOR GOD THAT DO WHATEVER THEY LIKE AGAINST HIS WISHES. VERY SOON THE WESTERN WORLD WILL LEGALISE BESTIALITY AFTERALL THE ONLY CRITERIA IS FOR ONE TO CLAIM THAT THEY WERE BORN LIKE THAT. EKENE KWAA MU UNU! NDI OCHA NNA HA DI OJI.

For every right there is a responsibility………..Isaiah 1 verse 18 God said, let us reason together so God expects us to be diligent and logical…………..

Now let us talk logic……..Say we have 8 people, 4 females & 4 males group A and group B. Let’s say they only have 99 years to live. People in group A are homosexuals and people in group B (heterosexuals) are not. When you return to the place in 100 years all the people in group A are dead. When you visit group B you will find a small town with people.

Thou shall not follow multitude to do evil…….where does it stop? Soon people may say in the name of Love a father wants to marry his own daughter and what has it got to do with anyone. If a person wants to be GAY what has it got to do with me? Please don’t involve me but no, homosexuals would like us to believe that their act is normal……………There is no point in anyone trying to act like some kind of snollygoster. God gave us the right equipment as people; you are what you have between your legs. Even if one is an atheist it’s just not logical to be GAY. But who am I to tell people what not to do.

Homosexuals should be grateful to Jesus as he preached repentance and salvation. The Law of Moses said as above that they should be stoned to death but Jesus Christ who was conceived by the Holy ghost preached repentance and said “ He who amongst you with no sin let him cast the first stone”. You see even in America and or UK Pastors are still preaching against homosexuality. I know you have no problems with that you are perturbed with the 14 years imprisonment. If not for the West pushing for all to inculcate homosexuality into our system Nigeria wouldn’t probably do anything about it.

Jonathan and the house on the other hand are looking for cheap popularity with our people. If given the choice I wouldn’t even allow the bill to be debated in the house because it’s not relevant to our lifestyle in Nigeria period.
