Photos: Scrap plane spotted being towed in Lagos

Relax people, no plane crash landed in Lagos yesterday. According NEMA spokesperson, the plane spotted on the streets of Lagos last night/early this morning is the scrap of an aircraft that was evacuated from the airport last night after the federal government issued a directive that all scrap aircraft be evacuated from all airports. The aircraft was spotted being towed along Mangoro and later seen at a gas station.

But is this how to evacuate scrap planes? Naija! See more photos after the cut...

Abuja-bound passengers, crew, escape fire in plane
National News Aug 3, 2009

ENUGU – A quick response by fire service personnel at the Akanu Ibiam Airport, Enugu, yesterday averted what could have resulted to a major air disaster in Enugu, as an Embraer 120 aircraft with 20 passengers on board caught fire shortly before take-off.

The turbo-prop aircraft, marked 5N-BLN and operated by Capital Airlines, was taxiing for take off at 2:05pm when a thick smoke was noticed from the right wing of the plane.

A witness told Vanguard that the smoke soon filled the entire plane forcing the passengers into a stampede as they all surged towards the exit point to escape from the raging fire.

The pilot, whose identity could not be immediately obtained, succeeded in opening the exit door from where the passengers and the crew members jumped down, with some sustaining minor injuries in the process.

A thick smoke was emitting from the burning aircraft engine on the right wing when fire service personnel at the airport quickly moved their fire tenders to the scene and succeeded in putting out the inferno in a few minutes.
Their quick response prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the aircraft.

The affected plane was seen parked in front of the VIP lounge of the airport yesterday with the entire body soaked with water, but officials of the airline and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) refused to comment on the incident.

It was learnt that some of the lucky passengers returned to their homes after the incident, while others boarded Arik plane to continue their journey to Abuja few hours after the incident.

The development, however, attracted many sympathizers who made fruitless attempts to view the affected aircraft, but were prevented by airport securitymen.

The security personnel also denied newsmen access to the area, saying they were instructed not to allow people access to the aircraft.

The Airport Manager and the Public Relations Officer could not be reached as they were not present at the airport when the incident occurred.

Disaster Averted in Enugu as Aircraft Catches Fire
08.03.2009

Twenty-eight passengers of an Embraer 120 aircraft, with registration number 5N BLN owned by Capital Airlines escaped death yesterday as the aircraft caught fire at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu as it prepared to take off.
The pilot made use of the fire extinguisher in the cockpit to put out the fire at the exhaust of the aircraft before he aborted the flight.
But in the confusion, two passengers were said to have sustained injuries as they probably struggled to get out of the aircraft. They were said to have been taken to the hospital for treatment.
In a press statement signed by the managing director of the airline, Mr. Amos Akpan, the flight was scheduled for Abuja by 1 pm and was cleared for takeoff and when the pilot started the engine, “the ground staff immediately signalled to the pilot to shut down the engines when they noticed unusual amount of smoke from the exhaust of the right engine”.
The passengers disembarked from the aircraft and their fares were refunded. The managing director directed that the aircraft should remain on ground until checks were carried out by the airline’s engineers.
According to the statement, “Capital Airlines yesterday cancelled its afternoon flight on the Enugu-Abuja route due to a precautionary measure when smoke was noticed at the exhaust.
“The Embraer 120, 5N BLN, 30-seater aircraft was scheduled for Enugu-Abuja at 1pm and was cleared for takeoff.
“When the pilot started the engine, the ground staff immediately signalled to the pilot to shut down the engines when they noticed unusual amount of smoke from the exhaust of the right engine.
“Passengers were disembarked and refunded their money.
“While we are sorry for the inconvenience it may have caused the passengers, we had to take the precautionary measure to cancel the flight for safety reasons.”
He added that appropriate authorities had been informed of the incident. The Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr. Harold Demuren, confirmed the incident, saying that the smoke was noticed when the aircraft was still on the ground and everybody was evacuated safely, adding that such incident could occur once in a while.
“Thank God that it was still on the ground and everybody was evacuated safely,” the Director-General said.

Davies is making some sense, but knowing fully well the nature and attitude of typical Nigerian to a lesser situation (even those traveled and exposed) will wonder at the sight of such event, it would have prudent of them to find a better alternative or approach in disposing such.

This is the normal way of evacuating planes, Linda browse about it, do some research, earlier dis year a plane was towed thru the streets of the US, express ways are actually built to be able land small planes in times of war and emergencies, so there's nothing new here, just that people should have been informed, I guess they tot they would hv finished overnight but it took longer. Please let's not bemoan what shouldn't be bemoaned. :)
