Nationwide strike: Labour and Senate meeting end without a deal

The senate president, David Mark, yesterday met with Labour and TUC leaders at his home in Abuja and tried to persuade them to call off the strike..but Labour and TUC leaders said lai lai, insisting there's no going back until government has reinstated the price of petrol to N65.

After the meeting, Labour leaders told the press - "We appreciate the intervention of the Senate President, because when windows are opening nobody will like to miss that, but our position is clear and that is that government must revert to N65 per liter of petrol."

Also in his brief statement to the press, Senator Mark assured that a resolution would be reached soon. "The meeting was fruitful and the problem will be resolved in the interest of Nigerians." he said

If the NLC and TUC back down now, then those who died for this cause would have died in vain. The govt must realise than it cannot be business as usual anymore. As for David Mark's speech, it is simply damage limitation. The changes that have happened and are still happening around the world today, happened because the common man did not back down.

Very concerned that they will soon settle the NLC and TUC leaders who will then accept N100 / liter and declare victory.

ITS NO MORE ABOUT SUBSIDY ALONE: consider these points.
1. The American President has only 2 aircraft, our president has 9 in his fleet and voted money recently to buy 1 more!
2. The British prime Minister has only 2 official cars, our president has 23 in his pool and only recently voted 300m naira tobuy 2 more bullet/bomb proof ones!
...
3. Senators in the US earn about $6,000 dollars monthly and that's about what a university professor, or a director in a statedepartment, or a doctor with 20yrs experience, or a teacher with 25yrs experience earn too.
In Nigeria a senator earns 245million Nairaper annum! Representing the salaries of 25vice chancellors, or 50 medical doctors, or 60 directors, or 500 school teachers!
4. The US, almost d size of Africa with about 500million people have 24 ministers, and 32 govt parastatals and commissions. Nigeria has 42 cabinet ministers, and over 50 government parastatals!
5. America with about 500million people and more mileage to drive consumes 39million litres of petrol daily, Nigeria with 150million people 60% out of which live in remote areas, yet our government tells us we consume about 35million liters of petroldaily!
IS SUBSIDY REALLY THE PROBLEM OF NIGERIA?
And a last one!!! President Jonathan last bought fuel with his own money in 1996 shortly before coming on board the NDDC! So also is a whole lot of them in government!
It is time to re-think and re-define. We have to remove money from politics. Political office holders should earn what civil servants earn. That's what they are: CIVIL SERVANTS!

If the sen president want them 2 call of the strike then the federal govt shld agree wit the conditions given to them. Because many are dead all because of their selfish interest.

@Anonymous at 9.39AM- be clear, what do you mean by 'these pple'?? Why can't you write in proper English?? If you can take the trouble to read Linda's webpage, you might as well make the effort to write in a language the rest of us can understand. It is no wonder the government thinks ordinary Nigerians are fools if they can't even understand basic English

There is no agreement until they revert back to 65 naira first!
Secondly, the presidency should cut all flamboyance and unnecessary spending!
Thirdly,an external contractor should be given the contract of building our refineries (if not, the dream of repairing and building more refineries will never happen)
Fourthly,we need all the police that killed protesters must be prosecuted!

Then we need our goverment to go and see how other economies that work, then we'll take it from there.

I see these goverment people in London and they are so well behaved to the point of fear (rolling my eyes, mumus) and I always think to myself that all the manners would be thrown out of the window once they touch down in MMA.

Ridiculous lot!

We need to clear all these stupid government officials and put in intellectuals that reason properly.

GOD Bless Nigeria!

anon@ 11.40 and 2.04, you two seem to be cut from the same cloth. That people have been dying in vain is reason enough to buck the trend NOW!, as for the one saying call off the strike now because people are suffering, it is this attitude that lets the govt get away with all this nonsense as they know the people have no staying power. You both need to open your eyes and minds and work for the greater and permanent good. I advise you to read Desmond Elliots tweet earlier today and you will understand that to take our rightful place in the comity of nations, we must do what is right, not what is convenient.

A secret deal has already been reached. PDP has identified those that will be paid off. Don't believe the misinformation from PDP's senate. They are liars.

Linda, you wrote NLC/TUC said Lailai dem no go gree, were you at the negotiation table?
FYI they said no and not lailai..Lol

65 naira or less. Nothing more. We are tired of fruitless negotiation, which Adams Oshimole used to do during his tenure as NLC president. The govt dat set the price as high as 141 naira knows dat TUC & NLC wil negotiate with them and make it change to 100naira.
