Ha! United Airlines to end their flights to Nigeria after June 30th

After years of operating a daily route from Houston to Lagos, United Airlines will stop flying to Nigeria next month. Their last fight will be on June 30th, ending the airline's only route to Africa. They confirmed this to a twitter user who asked them if it was true.

According to reports, United Airlines is ending their flights to Nigeria for two major reasons asides the one they mentioned above.

1, the weakness in the energy sector in Nigeria and 2. they (and other airlines) have been having difficulties collecting money from airline tickets sold in Nigeria.

Nigeria in the last few months have restricted the amount of money that can be moved abroad after the global slump in oil prices depleted our dollar reserve. Nigeria owed airlines about $575 million in air fares as of March 31, according to the International Air Transport Association.

United is not the first airline to end it's route to Nigeria. British Airways had also allegedly threatened to stop flying to Nigeria if something is not done about their money being stuck here.

Delta Airlines will now be the only major U.S. carrier flying to Africa.

United Airlines closing shop here means a lot of Nigerians will lose their jobs. Quite sad!

Let them go. I don't know how stupid we all continue to think. Most of the foreign companies do this. They make 75% of their income from Nigeria and Nigerians yet they move every penny out. Feasting fat from us but not willing to invest in us.

And in all, they bring their ugliest aircrafts here yet we are their largest market. Maybe with this, we will start to patronise and build our own products. You inclusive Linda. I haven't seen you advertise Nigerian dressmakers. Shame on you!

The money owed is not from today. The aviation industry was seriously regressed during the last government.

Anonymous said...

My dear don't be fooled. Foreign investors are flooding in. And if we had a good national carrier would we care about United? Is Buhari to blame for money owed to foreign airlines? Who is the aviation minister and why do Nigerians love to blame everyone but the responsible?

Unknown said...

Are you that fucked, that you didn't see it was from march it started?!

Unknown said...

Shut up and stop blaming the last govt. Maybe gej is also to blame for the disease ravaging tomatoe and hence the price of tomatoes

Unknown said...

What has the aviation minister got to do do with an airline's money trapped in Nigeria? It's Buhari and all these his stupid policies on forex. They make their money here in naira but sending it out in their currencies to their country becomes difficult cos of those lame policies.

The Nigerian problem did not start today. And before you ask, I did not vote for Buhari and I do not think the exchange price should be fixed. Let me try to explain this in an objective way.
For an economy to succeed, you have to diversify your income and limit your imports. To diversify, you need income, money and large amounts of it. You need to promote and educate and provide basic infrastructure such as light, water, roads and telecom services for other sectors to grow. Problem is in Nigeria, everyone ignored the. Oil was pumping, money was flowing. So Nigeria spent, wasted and stole. No savings. Well now oil is not selling anymore, and there is little to no savings. What do you think will happen?
On importation, Nigeria imports too much. Things such as rice which can be grown in Nigeria is imported. Part of the problem is the lack of proper infrastructure to run the Mills, but that ties back to what I said earlier. Combine this and some other factors and you have the situation Nigeria is in today. You can not fix it now because you need money to do so, money you don't have for reasons mentioned above. But until you and the rest of Nigerians see the pattern and objectively assess how to run the economy, this will happen again and again and again. Next time it will not be Buhari, it will be somebody else.
P/S United dropping out is not necessarily a bad thing. It is rather an opportunity for a Nigerian airline to fill the space. How many Nigerian airlines fly outside the USA. For a country that has people that like to travel, Nigeria is underrepresented in airlines flying to the USA

sometimes use your brain, activate common sense it is free! Even the airline said since March, meaning present government! If it were about the last government, they would have obviously mentioned it. Use your brain!!

Anonymous said...

You have a very low understanding of what is going on. Kolaq

Anonymous said...

Funny question! So if you work abroad, you leave all your money there abi? Please think again!

Anonymous said...

Stop being daft. We are one commodity economy and if that commodity price drops and the reserves were depleted, then that is what happens. We need to get out of just being an oil country.

I hope people understand that this airline are taking money away from this country. If they leave, more money for arik if they can get more aircraft. Imagine them moving such money out of our economy. Nigerians, we need to wake up! How are foreign countries airlines taking over our airlines. Yes, we have other airlines running in another country but foreign airline must not outshine the local. They will drain us and finish our reserve! We are empowering them and giving them more money

Too many ignorant people around on Social Media....they cant even process information, they are blaming Buhari. The 1st reason the Airline gave is low patronage from Oil companies as Houston, Texas is the Oil capital in USA and the oil industry there is experiencing a downturn just as Nigeria, so, Business class passengers who bear the cost of the entire plane has dropped.
2ndly, people must understand that businesses exploit oppurtunities....& have no time for sentiments....the oppurtunities are no longer here so they leave!!! Remember, they came with nothing but their suitcases.....every thing they use here is outsourced so they have not sacked staff as the staff dont belong to them. Social media illiterates should educate themselves more than they feed on gossip and write trash just to win LIB giveaway

this is sad...our aviation ministers have failed horribly. those of u condemning Buhari..do u think the money owed is from only his government..this is an accumulation from years back..pre buhari. Lets think before we start jumping down the truth of buhari.
truly sad we have leaders who are too greedy to see beyond their nose..no proper planning in any sector.
Nigeria now is reaping the fruits sown by our leaders in the past and present.
They stole and stole without thinking about the future of this nation.
our economy is bad because no one sat down to develop a structure or pay attention to happenings around the world.

Very sad indeed..My heart cries out for this land..Pray that God will forgive us and have Mercy on Nigeria and her citizens..This is the time to pray and not to pronounce doom upon Nigeria.

For a country that has people that like to travel, Nigeria is underrepresented in airlines flying to the USA. Also, for those who speak with pride about going to the states. How many people from the states come to your country for vacation? Before you blame the leaders, ask yourself: what have I done personally to help? Helping is not insulting another Nigerian even if he or she is not quite understanding the problem. Helping is not trying to. Make yourself fell superior to others.
