LIB reader complains about service charge collected at Uyo Airport

I haven't flown locally in a while so I don't know how these things work but here's something a LIB reader sent in. Read below...
"I am really worried with the way things are going in this country. I was at Uyo airport on my way back to Abuja and we were made to pay N1000 for service charge. Is the service charge not included in the ticket? They made it compulsory for everyone to pay N1000 cash before you will be allowed to check in. Please let the right thing be done and let the appropriate authority intervene because this is extortion. Thanks

I felt the exact way when I flew through uyo airport in October 2014, I was amazed at the fact that after I had checked in my bags, they wouldn't let me go to the waiting lounge without paying for the so called service charge. It's ridiculous because they are the only airport that do this ... Don't even see what will be taking me to Uyo again ,,, the place is overhyped

Gucchie said...

Same thing happened to me at Asaba airport on Saturday. First time transiting the Asaba - Lagos route and i was asked to pay N1k service charge.

It is not the airlines that impose this charge IMO, it is the Airport Authority as i have flown Aero a number of times and have never been asked for this service charge.

I am surprised that somebody is just complaining about this. this has been since 2011.i have been paying passenger service charge since 2011 and I don't want to mention the airline's name but at a point,I thought it was a federal whatever because nobody seemed to be complaining. And I have payed this in Lagos, Abuja, ASABA and BENIN airports.so I felt it was a new order from the FG.

I had to pay the service charge of N1000 in the asaba airport on 3rd Jan, 2015. It's only N1000 but why not include it in the ticket price so we know we're done with all payments once the ticket is bought?

Anonymous said...

Mumu,it' s not the airline but the airport it self. That is the way they operate there.

Stop flying Aero. It's normal with promo ticket.

This is day light robbery. I myself have had to pay this 1k service charge a number of times when leaving Uyo airport. It is not tied to any airline, for the mere fact that you are passing through Uyo airport you must pay 1k! So Akpabio has been collecting this charge for well over 2 years now from every single traveller from Uyo. Why?! What nonsense, why is it not done in other states and whose pockets have the millions of N1k been entering all this time?! Uyo State Govt, please stop this daylight robbery. I'm glad this reader brought up this injustice. Stop it. Passengers should start boycotting this corrupt practice!

Anonymous said...

Hi everyone, it is not an airline thing. I work with an airline in one of the state owned airports and need to explain why they collect that. Uyo and Asaba airports are privately owned by the state governments and they want to collect the service charge themselves. MMA2 is privately run not by a state but the airlines pay to them so it is included in the airfare.

Maybe they will stop collecting it when they hand over the airports to FAAN. As an airline staff, while using these airports, we pay for the service charge.

Most times it's added to the tickets you have already bought and it's stuck on your boarding passes. Arik I know charges it alongside the ticket fare, so you don't feel it. It's FAAN charges or something. Don't know about other airlines. But I know some airlines charge that separately. Calabar I know they did it when I used Aero sometime ago, but I don't know about Uyo route.

Anonymous said...

Must u call people names To make your point? He is telling you what is obtainable, u are there insulting him/her. Service charge is meant for FAAN, most times the airlines include it in their ticket, and they later reconcile account with FAAN and if FAAN feels like the airline is jot to be trusted, then they collect their money demselves which is what is happening in UYO.

Linda Fashion Blog said...

The #1000 actually goes to faan as service charge. The airlines were not remitting the 1k to FAAN so FAAN decided to start collecting it directly.

Talking about airlines, please Linda. Tell First Nation Airlines to pay salaries. The owner is a thief, he takes our pensions and never remits,he is owing over 4months salary and still makes his staff work endlessly. This is slavery, we should speak out please, we are supposed to be one Nigeria and we oppress ourselves like this. It's so unfair. Pls call out to first Nation to pay. If NCAA intervenes, the idiot will bride them and keep them quiet. Their aircrafts are not in good condition, still they are made to fly like that. We need to start creating awareness. Bottom line is I need my salary from First Nation Airlines. I have a family to feed

It's also a personal experience I had on February 25, 2014. I had to inquire from them what that money, taken without a receipt or ticket, was meant for.
I made some little noise with them and left, not knowing that other people are having the same feelings like I do.
This is extortion of the highest order. Calculate the amount of money the airport robbers make in a day. This money is taken no matter the air line you use, as long as you board at Uyo airport.
So SAD. This is not Goodluck Johnathan ooo but I believe they will say that he is the wrong doer in all sectors.

This is very true. Had an experience at the ilorin airport on my way to Abuja. Everyone was asked to pay N1000 before u can check in. This so wrong

Anonymous said...

Yes, Linda. I've been in a few local airports in Nigeria. Uyo was the only one I was asked to pay 1,000 service charge. i was quite surprised, I looked around and it seemed "normal". I just paid it because I didn't want to miss my flight but this should be looked into. It's plain extortion!

Unknown said...

Ok I work in that same uyo, and I want to make some things clear.. yes d service charge was initially incoperated in d ticket, but for over two years the airlines deliberately refused to remit the share back to d state government, how does d airport run without cash, so it was agreed that the cash be collected from source I.e from passengers
Sorry for all the inconvenience caused but it was a decision that had to b taken at that time

I have experienced it too in Uyo airport...very bad...I didn't understand what it meant...i didn't even have cash on me...but for my sister who dropped me...she bailed me out...it's really bad and should be looked into

My brother/sister, you obviously are just using that airport for the first time. This has been going on since that airport was opened and the most painful aspect is that not all passengers pay this money. You can confirm this.

I have experienced this twice when I visited Uyo. I think this service charge thingy should stop after all other airports don't do the same. Its really annoying particularly with the way the staff will act up as if you're about to join a tricycle. ~pissed~

Uwem Ekanem said...

I work at the AkwaIbom international Airport and wish to explain the rationale for the NGN1,000.00 Passenger service charge.
1. The passenger service charge is a charge applicable at most airports in the world
2. Payment for this charge may be direct or indirect .
3. The airport chose a direct collection because the previous method of collection which was indiect did not yield the desired result .The airlines collect on our behalf but do not remit as at when due. This resulted in the airport being owed huge sums.I must point out that the passenger service charge accounts for over 80% of aeronautical revenue.
4. It should be noted that the airlines do not charge the PSC for flights originating out of Uyo since the airport collects the PSC directly. Prior to the commencement of direct collection , the airlines were duly informed and asked to remove the PSC from their fare basis for flights originating out of Uyo.
5. Therefore, its the same charge collected in other airports. The difference is the method of collection.
